Overall Principles to Frame Our Approach

• Connectedness, interaction and collaboration
• Balance of routine, structure and flexibility
• Balance of computer time and non-computer time
• Teaching of new material, assessing for student mastery on core content as well as student
  exploration beyond the core
• Lessons learned...different circumstances

There are some differences...
Remote Learning Dec 2020 & Jan 2021 - Planning and Preparation for Remote Learning Session - Squarespace
Some Differences from Spring 2020

Spring 2020 December 2020/2021
• Little advance planning • Teacher/student training & planning
• No clear end date • Clear begin and end date
• Grading "eased up" • Continue with assessment* (students do own work)
• Teams and Zoom • Teams Grades 2-8/ Zoom PK-1
• 8:30 Announcements • 8:15 Announcements & 8:30AM start time
• Schedule was vastly different • Weekly schedule similar to in-person
• STEAM optional • STEAM not optional
• Mass on Wednesday 8:30AM • Mass on Tuesday at 8:30AM
• Practice week –no new material • No practice week – continue with curriculum
• More recording/less live instruction • More live instruction touch points
• Parent take attendance • Expect students to show up for their live classes
                                           • Teachers take attendance
                                           • Virtual clubs which started this year should continue

Some aspects similar to Spring 2020

• Announcements and Mass on Facebook (shorter, though)
• Morning check in with homeroom teacher
• End of day 3PM – No homework (in order to keep students off devices)
• Late afternoon daily email to parents/students to plan for the coming day
• Balance of screen time – live, pre-recorded and independent work

Some things to keep in mind
• Parents/care givers will assume the role of the school co-teacher regarding content –
  facilitating the learning environment
• Prioritizing essential content in the core areas to keep students on track
• Cognitive, social-emotional, physical, and spiritual/moral development woven into this
  routine is still important
• Expectations increase as grade level increases
• This time more explicit "school rules"
Remote Learning Dec 2020 & Jan 2021 - Planning and Preparation for Remote Learning Session - Squarespace
Learning Platforms

• Office 365 Teams for Grades 2-8 –naturally integrated through student email
• Zoom for grades K-1 –easier to navigate, connect, record
• Student emails grades K-8
• Integrate some other key apps as needed – iXL, iReady, Razz Kids, Digital Textbooks
• Regularly scheduled online times "office hours" for students to ask teachers for
help live as well as connect
Remote Learning "School" Rules

• Classroom norms, behaviors and expectations still apply
• Unmute and mute – beware of hot mics (for the adults)
• Camera on unless you specify (K-5); middle school stays as is
• Dressed for success – not in pj's please
• Prefer not in bedroom; definitely not in bed
• No eating during live instruction; keep beverages away from computers
• Take good care of school issued devices
• Bathroom use before/after live sessions
• Smoothwall device filter and monitoring still works at home
Countdown or Productivity Calendar
All hands-on deck

• Grade Level Teachers, STEAM teachers
• Support staff – Inclusion facilitators,
  counselor, nurse, tech support, school
  admin assistants, administration,
  advancement, etc.
• Need to stop by school? – please make
  appt
Where are you at?
Self-assess...

• I've got it from here...
• Need a refresher...
• I blocked it all out of my mind...
• New caregiver and/or new home
  circumstances?
Daily Flow
• School hours 8:15 AM to 3PM
• Start with Prayer, Pledge, Announcements – live stream through Facebook (don't
need to have an account)
• Schedule for the Day (based on household)
• End day with prayer and announcements – live stream through Facebook
• Evening – email sent to parents and students with preview for next day (Grades 3-
8 – parents and students) from ONE contact - (Homeroom teacher or Grade Level
Leader)
Parent To-Do's – Each
household is different

• More in depth explanation in upcoming
  slides
• Routines and schedule essential – allow
  flexibility
• E-learning at home rules essential
• Designate spaces at home for specific
  purposes during the "school day"
• Involve your children in these
  discussions
Routines
• Routines help keep a sense of normalcy and provide comfort
• Morning routines – dressed, brush teeth, hair, breakfast
• Morning chores/responsibilities - make bed, pick up toys, etc.
• Light morning exercise or movement – get blood flowing
• Use morning prayer and closing prayer to FRAME the school day
• Make a general schedule framework – allows for some flexibility
Make a • Use teacher info to create the "daily schedule" and review this with your
children in the morning – suggest to post it

schedule/daily • Breakfast followed by morning routine: get dressed, brush teeth, complete
                       morning chores, etc.

routine – please •
                   •
Self-directed play or light physical activity
                       Prayer, Pledge and announcements

don't skip this •
                   •
                       Instruction, lessons and school activities
Snack & Outdoor time (brain breaks – some quick physical break)
                   • Lunch - (socializing with peers virtually?)
                   • Outdoor time/physical activity /PE
                   • Quiet activity time; creative time, continue with lessons, independent reading
                   • Close day with prayer
                   • Afternoon "free choice" if they did a good job
                   • Afternoon chores or responsibilities - get kids up and moving again
• Lay out clear expectations, just like school
                 • Especially needed for when
                   parents/caregivers are working
                 • Post them – sign the "agreement" or
                   "constitution"
Remote • Have your children help create the rules
                 • Ask them – "What rules do we need to have to
Learning Rules make sure that everyone can learn and work
                   during the school day?"

Essential • Have between 5-8 rules...
                 • When there are problems/conflicts...go back
                   to the rules
                 • Don't assume your children will know how to
                   "do school at home"
Examples of home-
school rules
• Be on time at the beginning of the day and after lunch
  or breaks.
• Be kind, polite, and courteous to others.
• Try to problem solve before asking for help
• Keep your hands and feet to yourself.
• Listen to the teacher and classmates, and follow
  directions.
• Work hard, and always do your best.
• Again, have your children come up with the rules...they
usually know the rules they need to be successful
• How/when to approach parent/caregiver who is
  working
Remote Learning School at Home: Learning
Spaces Designation (don't skip this)

• Set for hours of the "school day"
• Where will learning on devices take place (in the open/supervised) - doesn't always have to be at the dining room table...options are good.
• Quiet space without devices?
• Where can physical activity take place?
• Lunch?
• Where can socializing activities take place?
• Where might creative learning happen?
• Where do care givers who need to work do their work?
• Where will everyone meet for morning and afternoon prayer? Mass?
• Establish spaces...if not working, can always modify
Why prioritize these actions?

• While it is not helpful to try and “keep things normal” (they aren’t), it IS helpful to create a
  routine
• Keep students on school "time" and will help transition back to school on January 19, 2021
• Change in caregiver situation...the kiddos are in a routine
• Help with your sanity
Parent Assignments to Complete before
Tuesday

• ONE Complete Daily Schedule/Routine Framework (remember you will revisit
this daily M-F to allow some flexibility with work responsibilities)
• TWO Complete Home-school rules/constitution
• THREE Designate Home-school learning spaces
• Involve your children
Remember –You are a co-teacher &
partner
• Facilitator of the learning environment
• Have children do work independently
• There can be a lot of pressure to suddenly become a home-school teacher –
  this is not your job!
• Give your children responsibility and support their ideas
• Encourage them to try their best and connect with the teacher during the
live office hours to work through items that frustrate them
Thank You!
