Choral Evensong: The Epiphany January 6, 2022, 6pm TRINITY CHURCH Broadway at Wall Street New York City
Mission In the spirit of the Gospels, the mission of Trinity Church Wall Street is to build generations of faithful leadership, to build up neighborhoods, and to build financial capacity for holy service in New York City and around the world. Our mission is grounded in our core values. Vision We seek to serve and heal the world by building neighborhoods that live gospel truths, generations of faithful leaders, and sustainable communities. Core Values Faith Compassion “For truly I tell you, if you have faith the size of a “When he went ashore he saw a great crowd, and he mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ‘Move had compassion on them and healed their sick.” from here to there,’ and it will move; and nothing —Matthew 14:14 Social Justice will be impossible for you.” —Matthew 17:20 Integrity “He has showed you what is good; and what the Lord “Finally, beloved, whatever is true, whatever is requires of you: to do justice, and to love kindness honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, and to walk humbly with your God.” whatever is lovely, whatever is gracious, if there is —Micah 6:8 Stewardship any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.” —Philippians 4:8 “There will come seven years of great plenty Inclusiveness throughout all the land of Egypt. After them there “There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither will arise seven years of famine, and all the plenty slave nor free, there is neither male nor female; for will be forgotten in the land of Egypt; the famine you are all one in Christ Jesus.” —Galatians 3:28 will consume the world.” —Genesis 41:29-30 Core Values guide us in carrying out our mission and realizing our vision. By their nature, core values are touchstones for prayer, discernment, ongoing conversation, and action. We seek a deep understanding and ongoing engagement with Trinity’s Core Values. Over the years, we will continue reflecting on what our Core Values mean in their application; how they challenge and inform decisions and actions in Trinity’s ministries, and how they help our ministries be aligned with our mission and vision. 2
Welcome to Trinity Church Please add your voice and heart to the prayers. Everyone is welcome at Jesus’ Table, and everyone’s voice is needed to tell the Good News of God’s love in Christ. If you would like to learn more about The Episcopal Church, or how you can become a member of Trinity Church, please visit www.trinitywallstreet.org/membership. About this Service The Epiphany Christmastide concludes—and a new liturgical season begins—with the Epiphany, which is one of the seven principal feasts of the Episcopal Church and is celebrated on January 6 each year. The day commemorates the epiphany, or manifestation, of God among us in human form. Traditionally, it also denotes the arrival of the Magi (also known as the Three Kings or the Wise Men) in Bethlehem to pay homage to the newly-born Christ child with gifts. Traditional Anglican Evensong (sung Evening Prayer) consists of the distinctive parts of the ancient services of Vespers and Compline—including the Magnificat, the canticle appointed for Vespers, and the Nunc dimittis appointed for Compline. Choral Prelude We Three Kings Three Kings of Orient, John Henry Hopkins, Jr. (1820-1891) We three kings of Orient are, bearing gifts we traverse afar, field and fountain, moor and mountain, following yonder star. Refrain: O star of wonder, star of night, star with royal beauty bright; westward leading, still proceeding, guide us to thy perfect light! Born a King on Bethlehem’s plain, gold I bring to crown him again, King for ever, ceasing never over us all to reign. Refrain Frankincense to offer have I: incense owns a Deity nigh; prayer and praising, gladly raising, worship him, God Most High. Refrain Myrrh is mine; its bitter perfume breathes a life of gathering gloom; sorrowing, sighing, bleeding, dying, sealed in the stone-cold tomb. Refrain Glorious now behold him arise, King and God and Sacrifice; heaven sings alleluia: alleluia the earth replies. Refrain —John Henry Hopkins, Jr. 4
The Invitatory and Psalter At the sound of the bell, please stand as you are able. Preces William Smith (1603-1645) Officiant O Lord, open thou our lips. Choir And our mouth shall show forth thy praise. Officiant O God, make speed to save us. Choir O Lord, make haste to help us. Hymn Brightest and Best of the Stars of the Morning Hymnal 117 Words: Reginald Heber (1783-1826), alt.; Music: Morning Star, James Proctor Harding (1850-1911) 6
The Psalm Psalm 72:1–7, 10–14 Janet Yieh (b. 1992) Please be seated. Choir Give the King your justice, O God, * and your righteousness to the King’s Son; That he may rule your people righteously * and the poor with justice; That the mountains may bring prosperity to the people, * and the little hills bring righteousness. He shall defend the needy among the people; * he shall rescue the poor and crush the oppressor. He shall live as long as the sun and moon endure, * from one generation to another. He shall come down like rain upon the mown field, * like showers that water the earth. In his time shall the righteous flourish; * there shall be abundance of peace till the moon shall be no more. The kings of Tarshish and of the isles shall pay tribute, * and the kings of Arabia and Saba offer gifts. All kings shall bow down before him, * and all the nations do him service. For he shall deliver the poor who cries out in distress, * and the oppressed who has no helper. He shall have pity on the lowly and poor; * he shall preserve the lives of the needy. He shall redeem their lives from oppression and violence, * and dear shall their blood be in his sight. Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: * as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen. 7
The Lessons The First Reading Isaiah 60:1–6 Reader A Reading from the Book of Isaiah. Arise, shine; for your light has come, and the glory of the Lord has risen upon you. For darkness shall cover the earth, and thick darkness the peoples; but the Lord will arise upon you, and his glory will appear over you. Nations shall come to your light, and kings to the brightness of your dawn. Lift up your eyes and look around; they all gather together, they come to you; your sons shall come from far away, and your daughters shall be carried on their nurses’ arms. Then you shall see and be radiant; your heart shall thrill and rejoice, because the abundance of the sea shall be brought to you, the wealth of the nations shall come to you. A multitude of camels shall cover you, the young camels of Midian and Ephah; all those from Sheba shall come. They shall bring gold and frankincense, and shall proclaim the praise of the Lord. Hear what the Spirit is saying to God’s people. People Thanks be to God. The Song of Mary Magnificat in C Minor George Dyson (1883-1964) Please stand as you are able. Choir My soul doth magnify the Lord, and my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour. For he hath regarded the lowliness of his handmaiden. For behold from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed. For he that is mighty hath magnified me, and holy is his Name. And his mercy is on them that fear him throughout all generations. He hath shewed strength with his arm; he hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts. He hath put down the mighty from their seat, and hath exalted the humble and meek. He hath filled the hungry with good things, and the rich he hath sent empty away. He remembering his mercy hath holpen his servant Israel, as he promised to our forefathers, Abraham and his seed forever. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be: world without end. Amen. 8
The Second Reading Matthew 2:1–12 Please be seated. Reader A Reading from the Gospel according to Matthew. In the time of King Herod, after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea, wise men from the East came to Jerusalem, asking, “Where is the child who has been born king of the Jews? For we observed his star at its rising, and have come to pay him homage.” When King Herod heard this, he was frightened, and all Jerusalem with him; and calling together all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he inquired of them where the Messiah was to be born. They told him, “In Bethlehem of Judea; for so it has been written by the prophet: ‘And you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; for from you shall come a ruler who is to shepherd my people Israel.’ ” Then Herod secretly called for the wise men and learned from them the exact time when the star had appeared. Then he sent them to Bethlehem, saying, “Go and search diligently for the child; and when you have found him, bring me word so that I may also go and pay him homage.” When they had heard the king, they set out; and there, ahead of them, went the star that they had seen at its rising, until it stopped over the place where the child was. When they saw that the star had stopped, they were overwhelmed with joy. On entering the house, they saw the child with Mary his mother; and they knelt down and paid him homage. Then, opening their treasure chests, they offered him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. And having been warned in a dream not to return to Herod, they left for their own country by another road. Hear what the Spirit is saying to God’s people. People Thanks be to God. The Song of Simeon Nunc dimittis in C Minor George Dyson (1883-1964) Please stand as you are able. Choir Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace, according to thy word; For mine eyes have seen thy salvation, which thou hast prepared before the face of all people, To be a light to lighten the Gentiles, and to be the glory of thy people Israel. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be: world without end. Amen. 9
The Apostles’ Creed BCP p. 66 I believe in God, the Father almighty, All maker of heaven and earth; And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried. He descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father almighty. From thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. Anthem We Have Seen His Star in the East John Carter (b. 1930) We have seen his star in the East and have come to worship him. Arise, shine, for thy light is come, and the glory of the Lord is risen upon thee. O Morning Star, how fair and bright, We have seen his star in the East, Thou beamest forth in truth and light, O Sovereign meek and lowly! And are come to worship him. Thou root of Jesse, David’s Son, We have seen his star in the East, My Lord and Savior, thou hast won my heart to serve Thee solely! We have seen his star in the East and are come to worship him. Thou art holy, fair and glorious, all victorious, rich in blessing, Rule and might o’er all possessing. We have seen his star in the East and are come to worship him. —Matthew 2:26, Isaiah 40, adapt. Philipp Nicolai (1556-1608), trans. Catherine Winkworth (1827-1878) 12
The General Thanksgiving BCP p. 71 Please stand as you are able. All Almighty God, Father of all mercies, we thine unworthy servants do give thee most humble and hearty thanks for all thy goodness and loving-kindness to us and to all men. We bless thee for our creation, preservation, and all the blessings of this life; but above all for thine inestimable love in the redemption of the world by our Lord Jesus Christ, for the means of grace, and for the hope of glory. And, we beseech thee, give us that due sense of all thy mercies, that our hearts may be unfeignedly thankful; and that we show forth thy praise, not only with our lips, but in our lives, by giving up our selves to thy service, and by walking before thee in holiness and righteousness all our days; through Jesus Christ our Lord, to whom, with thee and the Holy Ghost, be all honor and glory, world without end. Amen. A Prayer of St. Chrysostom BCP p. 72 Officiant Almighty God, who hast given us grace at this time with one accord to make our common supplication unto thee, and hast promised through thy well-beloved Son that when two or three are gathered together in his Name thou wilt be in the midst of them: Fulfill now, O Lord, the desires and petitions of thy servants as may be best for us; granting us in this world knowledge of thy truth, and in the world to come life everlasting. All Amen. Versicle and Response BCP p. 72 Officiant Let us bless the Lord. People Thanks be to God. The Blessing 2 Corinthians 13:14 BCP p. 72 Officiant The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Ghost, be with us all evermore. All Amen. 13
