Page 2 Feast of the Baptism of the Lord Dear Friends in Christ, Greetings from Nigeria. This weekend commemorates The Baptism of the Lord. This solemnity ends the Christmas season and begins the Ordinary Time of our liturgical year C. Briefly, let me refresh our memories on the seasons of the Church. They are Advent; Christmas; Brief Ordinary Time; Lent; Easter and the Long Ordinary Time. Ordinary Time is so called because there are no major feasts per se within the time. However, beginning the season with The Baptism of the Lord makes this Ordinary Time, a season with extraordinary significance. In the first Luminous Mystery of the Rosary, the Baptism of the Lord begins His public ministry and sets the tone for all other events of His life. As a people called to be partakers in Jesus’s ministry, the Baptism of the Lord calls us to reflect on the significance of our own baptism as the first step that sets the tone for all the events of our lives within the context of our Christian Vocation. At first glance, The Baptism of the Lord seems odd since baptism is a sacrament that remits Original and Personal Sin(s). So why would Jesus get baptized when He had no sin? In His humble submission to baptism, He provides us with an example of submission to God’s will so we can be grateful for this wonderful sacrament, which frees us from Sin(s) and incorporates us into the Church, the life of Christ on earth. Hence, His was necessary--not for Him, but for us. In baptism we promise to reject sin/Satan and to live in the newness of life. This Ordinary Time is a season for extraordinary living because in it we must watch carefully to live out this solemn baptismal promise. This promise must permeate and take precedence in all aspects of our lives: marriage, priesthood, parenting, friendship, political affiliations, opinions, etc. The major seasons that preceded this season imbued us with all the graces necessary to live our Christian Vocation in imitation of Christ’s life. As we begin this Ordinary Time in our Church Calendar and the first month of the year 2022, I pray that The Baptism of the Lord will remind us of our own baptism and the solemn promise that we and or our parents/ godparents made on our behalf, that is, to renounce Satan and Sin in whatever disguise they may come so that we may live in the Newness of life as God’s Children. Amen The ImaBridge Team continues with their Mission Trip this week and will return to the US by next weekend. I will then spend some time with my family and see you at the end of the month. In Christ, Fr. Godwin February Hot Breakfast St. Patrick Parish Theme and Prayer Theme: “Choose … whom you will serve … as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.” Joshua In an abundance of caution due to 24:15 the transmissibility of the Omicron Prayer: We will use this prayer at the conclusion of the Prayers of the Faithful at all Masses this liturgical variant, we will be canceling our year. Baptismal Death And Resurrection St. Patrick Knights of Columbus Council As we celebrate the Baptism of the Lord, we also honor our #16446 own baptism as our initiation into the Christian life and community. In the Gospel, the baptism of Jesus, with His Rockford Walk For Life - Sat., January 15th immersion and then emergence from the water, points to His later submission to God at His death, and His emer- gence from the grave at His resurrection. This pattern of death and resurrection is our path too, as followers of Je- sus. Throughout life, often in small ways, we learn to sur- render our limited and self-centered agendas. This surren- der often feels like death. The sacrament of Baptism ritually enacts this pattern to remind us of Jesus’ death and resur- rection, so that we too might embrace the deaths and res- urrections of our own lives. As Jesus emerged from the water, he encountered his Father and the Holy Spirit. Like Jesus, we can know we are God’s beloved, empowered by the Spirit. The Knights of Columbus are planning to attend the Rockford Walk For Life. Please contact Tad DePorter Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co. (Grand Knight) at tad_66@hotmail.com or 309-269- 0907 for more information and/or to let him know if you would like to join them.

Feast of the Baptism of the Lord Page 5 What are Mass intentions? And why do we have to pay for them? One part of Catholic culture that is sometimes hard to understand and very often misunderstood is the custom of offering Mass intentions. When a priest celebrates Mass each day, he offers each celebration of the Eucharist for a particular person, or intention. By doing so he applies special graces from God upon that person or intention. Similar to how we are able to intercede for others by our personal prayers, the Church is able to intercede for us through the celebration of the Mass. However, since the Eucharist is the “source and summit of the Christian life” the Mass possess a power that our personal prayers do not. The practice of offering Mass for particular intentions is an ancient one, dating back to the early Church. Inscriptions discovered on tombs in Roman catacombs of the second century give evidence this practice: for example, the epitaph on the tomb of Abercius (d. 180), Bishop of Hieropolis in Phrygia, begs for prayers for the repose of his soul. Tertullian (c. 200) attested to observing the anniversary of a spouse with prayers and sacrifices, i.e. the Mass This tradition is also seen in St. Augustine’s Confessions (c. 397), where Monica asks Augustine, “One thing only I ask you, that you remember me at the altar of the Lord.” Canon Law confirms this practice and states, “In accord with the approved practice of the Church, any priest celebrating or concelebrating is permitted to receive an offering to apply the Mass for a specific intention” (Can. 945 §1). Furthermore, it continues by saying, “The Christian faithful who give an offering to apply the Mass for their intention contribute to the good of the Church and by that offering share its concern to support its ministers and works” (945 §2). What this refers to is a longstanding practice in the Church of offering a specified amount of money to the Church for a particular intention offered by the priest. Upon hearing this practice many people might be tempted to think it is “simony,” the selling of sacred things for money. However, the Baltimore Catechism explains, “It is not simony, or the buying of a sacred thing, to offer the priest money for saying Mass for our intention, because the priest does not take the money for the Mass itself, but for the purpose of supplying the things necessary for Mass and for his own support.” While it is true that this custom has been abused in the past, the Church lays out specific rules regarding the money paid for Mass intentions. Each council of bishops determines the amount acceptable for the region, but the priest will offer a Mass for an intention even if someone doesn’t have the money for it. In many places the cost of a Mass intention is $10. The important part is to remember that you are not paying for the graces from God (which are of infinite value and can not be paid for), but for the material things that are involved with celebrating that particular Mass. With that in mind it makes much more sense and is not something that should cause scandal. Pope Paul VI said, “The Mass is the most perfect form of prayer!” It has immense power and countless miracles and conversions have occurred throughout the centuries by offering Masses for a specific intention or person. Mass intentions are a great treasure of the Church and have a spiritual weight that is incalculable. The 2022 Mass Intention Book has many Masses still available, both weekend and weekday, should you wish to have a Mass(es) celebrated for a specific intention. The intention of the Mass can be offered for both the living and the dead. To request a Mass Intention you may stop in the office during regular hours or call the parish office (815-385- 0025). A $10 stipend is requested for each Mass intention. In addition to Mass Intentions, you may also donate ($10) towards the lighting of the Tabernacle candle for one week either in memory of or in honor of family member, friends, etc.
