The Assumption Epistle // January 2022 …from Father Michael December 17, 2021 Dear Parishioners, Each year we make an appeal expressing the need to increase financial contributions to our church. With COVID-19 dominating our lives for almost two years, most of us have relied on pandemic grants and government subsidies for support. Hopefully, people are getting back to work and able to resume business as it was. Many have put the needs of our church on hold as we try to understand the variants still in our midst. With respect to our current contributions, we are not able to meet our operating expenses, and we rely on our fundraisers and the nursery school to insure the life of our church. In addition, our parish is one of 550 Greek Orthodox parishes in the United States. Each parish is assessed a dollar amount to contrib- ute to the Archdiocese annually. These monies are used to operate our Archdiocesan offices and ministries, together with the institu- tions of our national church, such as Hellenic College/Holy Cross School of Theology, St. Basil’s Academy, St. Michael’s Home for the Aged, St. Photios Shrine, and many more. Twenty-five percent of our contributions are given to our respective Metropolises to fund their offices and ministries. Based on the formula approved at the Archdiocesan Clergy-Laity Conferences by all the parishes in the United States, our Assumption Church’s assessment for 2022 is approximately $99,000. That comes out to almost $8,000 a month our church is expected to send to the Archdiocese. We must remember that our ability to contribute our fair share affects the Archdiocese’s budget and even our Metropolis’s budget. Our inability to meet our Archdiocese assessment and parish operating costs (currently our accounts payable is hovering at around $90,000) is not the result of unsuccessful fundraisers. On the contrary, our fundraisers have been quite successful even in COVID times. However, like all churches, we should not depend on fundraisers to sustain our church. A healthy church is sustained by the generous stewardship contributions of its parishioners. Our goal for the new year is to collect the necessary funds to fulfill our commitment to the Archdiocese and to pay-in-full all our creditors. Our goal for the new year is to ask our parishioners to consider an increase in their stewardship contribution to our church, remembering that we cannot sustain our church, its operating costs, and Archdiocesan commitment, at our present contribution level, all while continuing to give both financial and spiritual aid to those who are in need. Finally, we must remember that all we possess, however much or little it is, has been given to us by God, and as Christians, we believe that the Lord watches and will one day judge what we have given to Him, His Church, and to people who are in need. Ultimately, our motivation for giving to the Church is not out of our church’s financial needs nor so that we can receive a tax deduction. Rather, our motivation for increasing our contributions to the Lord’s Church is our personal expression of fulfilling the two great commandments of the New Testament: to love God and to love our neighbor. Please, make a financial sacrifice that expresses your love for God and what you’re capable of giving in 2022. Decide what you can give, whether you’ve fulfilled your current pledge or not. Don’t look around and see what others are giving: this is between you and God. Then, think about what you’ll contribute to our Assumption Church next year when submitting your 2022 Stewardship Card. In addition, please complete the Family Information Card to update our records and plan meaningful activities for the parish in the upcoming months. The church is for all ages and is welcoming to everyone. Thank you for taking the time to read this letter. Thank you for your concern for the wellbeing of our parish and its sacred mission to our families and to all people. We wish you and your family a Merry Christmas and a blessed and healthy New Year. In Christ’s service for you all, Fr. Michael Varlamos 1

The Assumption Epistle // January 2022 Philoptochos News Philoptochos ladies have been busy doing good this Holiday season! We began by collecting 89 coats for the One Warm Coat program. The coats were delivered to the Detroit Rescue Mission Genesis House. We assisted Fisher Elementary School in South Redford, by donating 10 Christmas baskets filled with blankets, slipper socks, hats/scarves, board games and gift cards. We gathered together for a delicious Christmas dinner provided by Tony Marchiori followed by a very funny white elephant exchange. We partici- pated again this year in the adopt-a-family program through Children’s Hospital of Michigan. Due to COVID, the program coordinator asked for us to donate various gift cards instead of clothes and toys. As usual, the ladies were incredibly generous and many gift cards were delivered to the hospital for distribution to needy families. During the months of January, February and March, we hold our meetings on Sunday after church. Our next meeting will be on Sunday, January 16. We hope to see many of you there. If you have any questions, please contact president Madelyn Torakis at assumptionscsphiloptochos@gmail.com 5

The Assumption Epistle // January 2022 Senior Citizens November 16, 2021 Dear Seniors and Assumption Parishioners, May the true spirit of Christmas bring you peace and happiness the whole year through! We celebrated with our friends and office staff with a thankful prayer. Our beloved Father Michael came later and visited our tables, greeting everyone and giving us all his blessings for the season. At the center of each table was a beautiful gift wrapped present and inside it had an “amaryllis bulb kit” donated by Meropie Fotias. Thank you Meropie and your anonymous friend who helped you wrap them up so beautifully. P.S. each table placed their names in a bag and the lucky one whose name was picked got the present. The dessert was donated by one of our members who wishes to be anonymous. Happy Birthday to Rose Janevic, Dimosthenis Parasakis and Anthony Kafeus. We wish you many good years of good health and peace in your hearts in all your lives. The 50/50 raffle ticket winner was Barbara Kanoros, she won $47.00 and donated $ 25 back to the club. Thank you Barbara. Toula Phillips gave us our treasury report. Thank you Toula. We also thank Mr. Tony Marchiori for his excellent food and staff services. Our next luncheon will be December 14, 2021 and we hope to see you all again to celebrate Christmas. P.S. Thank you all for donating money for the three Christmas wreaths for our Church’s front doors. And now my favorite time with each one of you. When you read what I write from my heart, I want to share with you my insights and my strength I get when I read the bible and I am sure you share the same and much, much more insights. “Come, let us bow down in worship, let us kneel before the Lord our Maker.” Psalm 95:6. During this season many manger scenes depict the wise men or magi visiting Jesus in Bethlehem at the same time as the shepherds. According to the Gospel of Matthew….. the Magi showed up later. Matthew 2:11 tells us “on coming to the house, they saw the child and his mother Mary and they bowed down and worshipped him…” The words “bow down and worship”, I ponder them over in my heart and in my mind, because Jesus is always in my mind, because Jesus is always worthy of worship. When the Holidays are past and we head back to life’s everyday routines, we still have someone to celebrate. Jesus Christ is IMMANUEL, “God with us” in every season. He has promised to be with us always. Because He is always with us, we can worship Him in our hearts every day and trust that He will show Himself faithful in the years to come. Just as the magi sought Him, and found Him follow- ing the star, may we seek Him, find Him, and lay our hearts to Him and worship and honor Him with our works and actions in all our lives., Amen With love in Christ, Kalliopy A LIFETIME OF LEARNING BEGINS AT ASSUMPTION DEDICATED TO EACH CHILD AS A TOTAL INDIVIDUAL — SOCIALLY, EMOTIONALLY PHYSICALLY AND COGNITIVELY IN A SECURE AND CARING SCHOOL ENVIRONMENT ASSUMPTION NURSERY SCHOOL AND TODDLER CENTER REGISTER NOW 2022 - 2023 Class Offerings: Program Offerings: Toddler 1 - 2 1/2 years Flexible scheduling: Transition 2 1/2 - 3 years Full day, half day Preschool 3 and 4 years minimum 2 days/week Young 5'5 Open year-round 7:00 a.m. - 5:30 p.m. Small class size SUMMER YOUTH CAMP AGES 1-10 YEARS Register for 2022 - 2023 School Year Joni Gerardi, Interim Director / Kate Haynes, Program Director 22150 Marter Road, St. Clair Shores, MI 48080 586.772.4477 www.assumptionnursery.org 7
The Assumption Epistle // January 2022 Stewardship 2022 Christian Stewardship is… …learning how to be a responsible and concerned caretaker of Christ’s Church; it is learning how to enjoy Church life and be happy in Church work., for in Her dwells the fullness of the Spirit of God. …our active commitment to use all our time, talent and treasure for the benefit of humankind in grateful acknowledgment of Christ’s redeeming love. …caring for the needs of others. …offering one’s self to God as He offered Himself to us. …what a person does after saying “I believe…”, as proof of that belief. …devotion and service to God and His Church as persons, as families, as diocese/metropolis, as national Church and as Church universal. Join us in supporting the important ministry of our Assumption Parish by making your 2022 Stewardship Commitment now and completing your Family Information Card. Together we will overcome the pandemic that has isolated many and strengthen our Assumption Family to care for one another in the mission outlined above. Stewardship Sunday is January 9. Assumption Greek Orthodox Church 21800 Marter Road St. Clair Shores, MI 48080 Phone: 586-779-6111 Fax: 586-779-8369 Website: www.goassumption.org Home is safe and familiar. It is where we be- long. Our Orthodox Christian Church is our spiritual home. It is a place of prayer, comfort, spiritual healing, and celebration. We are at home in the fragrance of incense, the sound of hymns and prayers, the physical touch of kneeling, bowing and making the sign of the cross, and the taste of Holy Communion and antidoron (the blessed bread). You may have been brought to the Orthodox Church on your 40th day, or the Orthodox Church may have been the destination of your spiritual journey. For both, the Church is a spiritual home to which we may always return. We are brothers and sisters in Christ—a family. Our Church is so much more than a building. It is where we turn for comfort, support and healing. It is where we make true Christian friends that last a lifetime. No matter where we go in the world, we can come home to the Orthodox Church to be surrounded by the same familiar elements: altar, iconostasion (icon screen), pulpit, altar table, tabernacle, iconography, baptismal font, candles and more. Church is not so much a place as it is what we are together. We are called to be the Body of Christ to witness to God in the world. When we truly become members of the Church, transfigured by our faith and worship, we become what the Church was intended to be. As Saint Paul writes to the Ephesians, “So then you are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are citizens with the saints and also members of the household of God” (Ephesians 2:19).
