NCL news The winning entry of our Art Competition is called ‘Unite’ by Margaret Hunter. Margaret is now retired, having worked previously as a Florist and a Learning Support Assistant for children with learning disabilities. She has 9 grandchildren and has completed a number of art classes with us in the last few years. She continued her learning with us online throughout lockdown and entered our competition to create a piece of art for the Skills Centre building where our study programme learners attend their courses. Margaret says “I hope my artwork sparks imagination about the possibilities that art can open up in life. You are never too old to learn new skills and broaden your mind. Painting enriches the soul and as well as developing a skill, it soothes the mind and improves mental health. Art is for everyone; it doesn’t discriminate no matter who you are. It makes me extremely proud to have had my work selected for display in an environment dedicated to the younger generation”. Nothing is going to stop us now – our learners tell their online learning success stories “I was a bit apprehensive with the distracting in the straightforward and effective. What will you get from an apprenticeship? The new apprenticeship standards develop your skills, knowledge and behaviours helping you to start a new career or advance in your current position. “I am grateful for the opportunity to train again. I feel a sense of achievement and gained new skills and knowledge for the apprenticeship.” Julie Darby, Business Administration Level 3, Walbottle Campus “Throughout my apprenticeship, I was able to learn all the necessary skills which have helped me gain a full-time administration position within Newcastle City Council.” Stephen Mugford, Business Administration Level 3, Newcastle City Council Despite the Covid-19 pandemic, we are still recruiting and training apprentices.
