Eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time August 1,2021 QR Code for this Sunday’s Liturgy. Thought of the week Saint quote … “For those who love, nothing is too difficult.” “I love you” begins with - St. Ignatius of Loyola. I, but ends up by you.
August 4, 2021 Dear brothers in Christ, We celebrate this August 4th, the feast of Saint John Vianney (born Jean-Baptiste-Marie Vianney; 8 May 1786 - 4 August 1859), Patron Saint of parish priests. He is often referred to as the "Curé d'Ars." His priestly zeal and pastoral work brought about spiritual transformation of the community he served and its surroundings. He is an encouragement to all of us to persevere in ministry and bring healing to our people in the sacrament of Confession, devotion to the Holy Eucharist and love for our Blessed Mother Mary. "Thank you for showing me the way to Ars... I will show you the way to Heaven." We may be famil- iar with the story of how St. John Vianney asked for directions to his new parish assignment. Upon reaching his new post he thanked the young villager who gave him directions and then informed him, “I will show you the way to Heaven." His years of ministry as a parish priest accompanied the people of his parish and beyond to know Jesus Christ and journey to Heaven. How blessed we are to have wonderful people to minister to as priests. We are so grateful for the willingness of our parishioners and other good people to assist us with administration of our parishes or special ministries. We are now emerging from a very difficult period and time of trial due to the Covid Pandemic. We have much work to do to serve Jesus and His people. It will not be easy. The example of St. John Vi- anney can inspire us to trust the Lord will work through us to help God's people return to Mass and full participation in the life of the Church. We are aware of the pew surveys that inform us there is confusion and misunderstanding on the meaning of the Eucharist. Now is our time as St. John Vian- ney did in his time to transform the lives of others in Christ through the priestly ministry entrusted to us by Jesus though His Church. Happy feast day brothers! May St. John Vianney intercede for us and the people we are called to serve. As a priest now for 30 years, wherever my assignments have sent me within or outside of Rockville Centre, I give great thanks for the honor to be a brother priest with you. In my role as an auxiliary bishop and vicar assisting our diocesan bishop, Bishop John O. Barres, I am always happy to be in your presence and pass on to the bishop the great work you are doing for God's people. May the Lord bless our bishop and each other in our priestly ministry. +Robert J. Coyle Today we ask for our patron to pray for us. Prayer of St. John Vianney I love You, O my God, and my only desire is to love You until the last breath of my life. I love You, O my infinitely lovable God, and I would rather die loving You, than live without loving You. I love You, Lord and the only grace I ask is to love You eternally... My God, if my tongue cannot say in every moment that I love You, I want my heart to repeat it to you as often as I draw breath. 50 North Park Avenue · Rockville Centre, New York 11570-4184 · phone 516.678.5800 • fax 516.678.3138 • www.drvc.org

Feast of the Dedication of the Basilica of St. Mary Major, August 5 St. Mary Major, located on the summit of one of Rome’s seven hills, the Esquiline Hill, is the largest church in the world honoring God through Mary, and is one of the four Roman basilicas known as patriarchal churches in memory of the first centers of the Church. St. Mary’s, is the See of Antioch, where Mary is supposed to have spent most of her later life. At the order of Pope Liberius, the basilica was built in the mid-fourth century, and was rebuilt by Pope Sixtus III. Till 1960, this feast was called the Dedication of the Basilica of St Mary of the Snows. According to a legend, a wealthy Roman couple , who were without heirs, pledged their fortune to the Mother of God. In affirmation, she produced a miraculous summer snowfall and in a vision on the same night, told them to build a church on the site . The couple built the basilica in honor of Mary on the very spot that was covered with snow. So this legend was long celebrated under the name of Our Lady of the Snows, and at the conclusion of the Solemn Mass in the basilica, a shower of white rose petals were released from the basilica’s dome on every August 5. On the same day, at sunset, an artificial "snowfall" is staged as a tourist attraction in the square outside the basilica. Prayer to Our Lady of Snows. Oh Mary, lady of the greatest heights, teach us to climb the holy mountain of life in Christ. Guide us along the paths of God, marked by your maternal footprints. Teach us the path of love, that we might always live in love. Teach us the path of joy, that we might bring joy to others. Teach us the path of patience, that we might welcome everyone in generosity. Teach us the path of goodness, that we might serve our brothers and sisters in need. Teach us the path of simplicity, that we might enjoy the beauties of creation. Teach us the path of meekness, that we might bring peace to the world. Teach us the path of fidelity, that we might never tire of doing good. Teach us to raise our eyes to the heights, so as to never lose from our sight the final goal of our lives: eternal communion with the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Amen.
Eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time August 1,2021 ST.IGNATIAN YEAR CORNER Decision to study Ignatius, who in his Autobiography refers to himself as the “pilgrim,” describes his decision to acquire as good an education as the circumstances permitted. “After the pilgrim had learned that it was God’s will that he should not stay in Jerusalem, he pondered in his heart what he should do and finally decided to study for a time in order to be able to help souls” (Autobiography, 50). Ignatian Spirituality: 4 Principles of Pilgrimage that apply to the life of each one of us. Pilgrimage presents itself, but we decide to go or stay. Ignatius chose to reflect on his life and understand what God was saying to him. His pilgrimage truly began with his willingness to begin. God does not force us for anything, but invites us—through circumstances, through our intuition, through our gifts and opportunities, even through our trials. It’s up to us to make the decision to begin, and to make the daily decision to continue. The pilgrim path never goes in a straight line. We dream of something, but are guided, step by step, to another one. At each step, we should make discernment based on faith, though we cannot see the next step. This is how it is supposed to be. God uses our mistakes, our lack of knowledge, and our weaknesses all along the way. Just as God knew every weakness, every sin, and every desire of Ignatius and used them, God knows everything about each one of us as well. God knows our wounds, fears, talents and desires, and He uses all of it, making us capable of His mission on earth. We learn by walking. God cannot direct us if we are not doing anything at all, in our fear and over-caution, and our need to know every detail before acting. Ignatius was never passive or inactive. He stumbled and made mistakes and God simply redirected him through circumstances, prayer, and the counsel of others. He does the same with all of us.

Eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time August 1,2021 Looking for a Few Good Men And Women Our parish is in desperate need of adult altar servers for the Funeral Masses held here at St. Ignatius. This is a wonderful, worthwhile service ministry not to just the parish, but to those families during a very sad time of their lives. We serve as a two member team at each Funeral Mass. There is some brief training involved. We need men and women to serve in this capacity. Our goal is to gain enough volunteers so no one would have to serve more than a couple of times each month. Typically, Funeral Masses are held on Monday through Saturday mornings. If you are able to help and would like to be a part of this ministry, we really need your help. Please contact me, Carol Hogan at hoags10@optonline.net or at 516-987-4011. I would love to hear from you and to add you to our ministry. Thank you. MESSAGE FROM THE SOCIETY OF ST. VINCENT DE PAUL MEMBER PROFILE: DIANE BROUSSEAU United in prayer and action, may we become a visible sign of Christ and may we give witness to His boundless love which reaches out to all and draws them to love one another in Him. My name is Diane Brousseau and I have lived in Hicksville for 46 years. I have always believed in doing whatever we can to help others. As early as I can remember there was always an opportunity for community service if you were open to it; whether it was a Carnival in the backyard, Religious Education teacher at Our Lady of Mercy Parish, and while my 3 boys were of school age, being a PTA Chairperson/Officer and Cub Scout Den Mother. The boys are now grown and have families of their own and I am blessed to be Grandma (aka Mimi) to 5 wonderful grandchildren. Twenty-five years ago, as my PTA days were winding down, I was invited to join The Kiwanis Foundation of Hicksville. It was through Kiwanis that I began my relationship with Human Services here at St. Ignatius. Over the years Kiwanis, has partnered with Human Services on special events like monthly birthday parties and 3 Kings Celebration, Thanksgiving Meal and the Christmas in July Food Drive. Proving once again there is always an opportunity for service. My next opportunity came four years ago when I heard that St. Vincent de Paul Society at St. Ignatius was looking for new members. There I found a group of like-minded people who believed in helping our neighbors in need. Whether it’s a home visit to assess furniture needs or delivering food or helping with a bill payment or just reaching out to a neighbor who needs someone to listen or someone to pray with, the members of St Vincent de Paul are available to provide assistance. We all have different talents and experiences to bring to the table and together we find creative ways to help our neighbors. I am inviting you to make difference in a neighbor’s life and at the same time make a difference in your own life. If you would like to make a donation or learn more about how you can volunteer with the Society of St. Vincent de Paul Conference, please contact any one of the members found on our conference web page on the St. Ignatius de Loyola web site. https://www.stignatiushicksville.org/st-vincent-de-paul.html
Eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time August 1,2021 FOCUS ON RELIGIOUS FREEDOM Religious Freedom Rights Attacked: an Eagle Scout and a Police Officer "Only two defining forces have ever offered to die for you: Jesus Christ and the American Soldier; One died for your soul; the other died for your freedom." (1) An Eagle Scout Project honoring America's veterans is under fire for mentioning Jesus Christ on a memorial in Monument, Colorado. Sixteen year old Michael Carlson created the memorial as a tribute to his grandfather and father and it sits in the towns cemetery, where the family purchased the burial plots on which it sits. "Michael saw veterans were underrepresented here. He didn't go to the government and say 'Fix this.' He decided to fix it himself," said Monument Mayor Wilson.(2) The anti-religion group, Military Religious Freedom Foundation (MRFF) objected to the memorial plaque and demanded that it be altered or removed from the public cemetery. The town retained First Liberty Institute to defend the memorial. "Your attack on a minor who simply intended to honor our veterans is profoundly disrespectful to all involved," wrote First Liberty council in a recent letter to MRFF. (3) It's not yet clear whether private ownership of the cemetery plots where the memorial stands will be enough to ward off a lawsuit from MRFF. A Kentucky police officer was suspended for 4 months with pay but without any much needed overtime hours in February when, while off-duty and before dawn, he prayed the Rosary alone with his father for less than an hour in front of an abortion center. When he started his patrol duty later that morning, he was ordered to report in and placed on leave pending an investigation. "We are happy for the officer that the Louisville Police Department finally did the right thing and put a good policeman back on the streets.
