“Maxine and Grampa’s Hat” Our cover this year is, for us, quite unusual but fitting to these most unusual times. The COVID-19 pandemic of 2020 severely impacted nearly every aspect of life. The joy of cycling with large groups of fellow cyclists was taken from us as we reduced contact to slow the spread of the disease. The result for recreational cycling was disastrous: nearly every event listed in our 2020 Calendar was canceled. This painting of a child and her dog chasing down a path through amber grasses reminded us of warm summer breezes and carefree times; it is a picture comforting to behold. We aren’t the only ones solaced by this image. Artist Gay Freeborn passed along this note from Jean, the person who purchased the original art: “The painting captures my childhood (1950s) memory of out-the-door /home-by-dinnertime … the freedom to explore my world on my trusty steed. One of the bonuses in this painful year {2020} has been seeing so many youngsters, families, pods of teens and preteens, little ones on trainers, pedaling up and down the street and all over town.” As our slate of recreational/social bicycling events begins to rebuild from a terrible year, we can take heart that, through all of this, cycling never really stopped. The bicycle is ready, as always, to carry us down the road ahead, to times of happiness and adventure. To see more of Ms. Freeborn’s art, visit her website: PaintingsByGFreeborn.com
Ready to ride? Ohio bicyclists have a splendid array of organized events to enjoy every year. The Ohio Bicycle Federation is pleased to help get the word out and encourage cyclists of every interest and every skill level to get out and ride! Here are some hints on how to get the most out of this Calendar and make your riding season great: Get current details: don’t just show up at last year’s place and time— organizers’ plans can and do change, or there may be an error in our listing! Look ahead: some events have entry deadlines weeks in advance of ride dates. Increasingly event listings offer Web site addresses where additional information can be found along with downloadable entry forms or online registration for immediate gratification. If requesting information by mail, be sure and send a self-addressed, stamped business-sized (#10) envelope to the address given. If you don’t send a SASE with your request, don’t expect a reply!
