If your Presbyterian Homes community is a mission that your feel called to support, you may direct your gift in a way that it helps employees or your neighbors at your community. Giving to employee hardship, ap- preciation or education assistance is a great way to show your gratitude for employees. Funds for benevo- lence, greatest needs and spiritual life enhance residents’ experiences. Every gift is important and makes a difference to employees, you and your neighbors. The Foundation is here to help you and offers these tips: Cash – you may send a check to Presbyterian Homes Foundation, 2845 Hamline Ave N, Roseville, MN 55118. Some donors find it satisfying and easy to be sustaining donors by making automatic monthly gifts to benefit their communities. Credit Card – PHS provides a secure online giving site on the Presbyterian Homes Foundation website. You can find this at www.preshomes.org and click on “Make a Gift.” You may notice state and na- tional Giving Days this time of year. The organizations that sponsor these days take fees out of donors’ gifts. To ensure that your charitable contributions have the impact you desire, it’s always best to give directly to favorite charities. Stock – If this is a good option for you, it’s a smart idea to put time on your side for a 2021 gift by not wait- ing until December to begin the stock gift process. Please contact a gift planner at your site or the Foun- dation at 651-631-6408 if you make a stock gift. Looping us in on your plans helps us to better stew- ard your gift through the sale process. For assistance, please call the Presbyterian Homes Foundation at 651-631-6408 or 651-631-6418. Thank you for all you do to make your Presbyterian Homes community a welcoming home for you, your neighbors and PHS employees. 715-243-3900 www.deerfieldphs.org Page 3
THE DEERFIELD NEWS Spiritually Speaking: “How Much Does It Cost?” W e do it all the time, of course, perhaps sometimes with a higher level of awareness than others. We estimate the cost, weighing one option against another, trying to decide if we have enough or want it enough or need it enough. We do it with our budgets and we do it in our relationships and we do it with our lives. How much is something worth? What do I value in a certain relationship? What’s the price to pay? In Luke 14: 25-33, Jesus reminds us that we also must calculate the cost of what it means to follow Him; to do this in our lives of faith. Jesus reminds those following Him, that there is more to following Jesus than lunch on a Galilean hillside, or healing for themselves and their loved ones. The cost of discipleship requires putting the vision of God first in our life; ahead of the vision of home, of family and ahead of our own self-created kingdom, including what we have accumulated and own. Jesus is not saying that a basic principle of your relationship with God is to hate your family! Jesus is not saying we should hate our own life to the point of self-destruction! Jesus did not say we should denigrate or show lack of respect for others! The whole point of this passage is that Jesus warns that we will come to a decision point at some time or another in our relationship with Him. We will have to choose what comes first. Somewhere, sometime, someplace we come to the decision that Jesus Christ absolutely comes first in our lives. Jesus calls us to commitment! Counting the cost of discipleship means loving God more than family, or self, or anything else! Discipleship is a demanding thing. How much does it cost? If you would follow Jesus, come with all you are and with all you have! Fred Brumm, M.Div. Campus Pastor Page 4 1127 West Eighth Street, New Richmond, WI 54017
THE DEERFIELD NEWS WE ARE HIRING! Do you know someone who might be interested in working at The Deerfield? We are currently hiring for: Weekend Receptionist Resident Assistants, RN/LPN Dining Servers Anyone interested can apply at www.deerfieldphs.org or call Paige at 715-243-3935 with questions Wellness Thoughts Exercising with Pain W e often ask at the beginning of classes, “Does anyone have any extraordinary aches or pains – anything that we should be careful of today?” Many chuckle and some respond by saying “How much time do you have . . .? At least people are still showing up for exercise classes. Sometimes exercise can help with pain management. There are two kinds of pain: acute and chronic. With acute pain, which is sudden and hopefully brief in duration, you would want to stop exercising and seek medical attention. But with some chronic or on-going pain, it may be appropriate to do some exercise. Particularly, exercise that helps with flexibility, endurance and/or strength might help if done in moderation and with doctor approval. Many people feel relief from pain after they do some moving about in the warm pool, of if they can take a nice walk, or attend a class to stretch their muscles. Others might find relief in a regular practice of Tai Chi or Yoga. If you are experiencing pain, tell your doctor and talk with him/ her about exercise to see if that might be an option for you. Wishing you well and pain-free movement, Your Wellness Team 715-243-3900 www.deerfieldphs.org Page 5
