THE DEERFIELD NEWS Gables Star of the Month: Susan Levi S usan Ann Levi was born to Harold and Helen Prahl on June 15, 1945 in Sheboygan, Wisconsin. She was the only child. Sue remembers attending the 1967 NFC championship game between the Green Bay Packers and the Dallas Cowboys with her dad when she was about 7 or 8 years old. It would later be famously referred to as the Ice Bowl as temperatures reached a bitterly cold 13 degrees below zero. Despite the cold she has fond memories of the game and was happy to be part of a historic game as well as see Vince Lombardi! After graduation, Sue enrolled in a tech college and eventually graduated from St. Norbert’s with a bachelor of science degree in nursing. She moved to New Richmond with her husband, Dale, in 1978 and worked at Holy Family Hospital (now Westfields Hospital). Sue and Dale had two children- Scott and Kevin. Sadly Dale was killed in a motorcycle accident when the boys were young. Sue later met Dave Levi and they married in 1980. Dave had two little boys, Scott and Todd. It was a busy life caring for four little boys! Fortunately they had a fantastic babysitter, Lisa Olson, who the boys adored. When Kevin was a toddler, he got an infection that caused him to become deaf. He went to school at the Delevan Wisconsin School for Deaf and Sue is proud of his accomplishments. Scott is an Episcopalian minister. She has two grandchildren, Mia and Ryan. Sue and Dave enjoyed riding motorcycle and took many little trips around the area. They also enjoyed traveling to Florida and Mexico and had great fun. Sadly Dave passed away in December 2020. Sue is so grateful for her boys who have all been so loving to her during this difficult time. Sue enjoys living at The Deerfield and is especially happy that life is beginning to return to some normalcy after the pandemic. She attends most organized activities, enjoys the garden and riding around the campus. Page 2 1127 West Eighth Street, New Richmond, WI 54017

THE DEERFIELD NEWS Spiritually Speaking: On the Edge T here are some experiences in life that take us to the very edge of our ability to cope. We have a word for it: finding yourself at the end of your rope. In the Gospel of Mark 5:21-43, we are presented with a couple of people who had reached the end of their ropes: a father whose daughter was dying and a woman whose life had been almost literally consumed by her illness. A prominent man, a leader in the synagogue, comes to Jesus and pleads with him to save his daughter. As they were on the way, however, a woman who had been afflicted with an illness for 12 years came and touched Jesus. The woman was so desperate, she believed that all she needed to do was touch Jesus’ clothes, and she would be healed. And in fact, she was! What faith and courage it took for her to take the step of venturing into the crowd and reaching out to touch Jesus. During the time Jesus was healing the woman, the synagogue leader’s daughter died. One would think that would be the end of it. But Jesus told the father, “Do not fear, only believe”! Normally we would say something like, “I’m terribly sorry for your loss.” But to say, “Do not fear, only believe” strains the imagination. The fact that the man, an influential leader, came personally to beg Jesus for healing suggests that he was just as desperate as the woman. What was this father supposed to believe in now that his daughter was dead? Jesus engaged these individuals with acts of compassion in response to human need; individual demonstrations of the new life of God’s Kingdom. Jesus asked this grieving father to believe that God had begun working to make all things new here and now. What do we believe in when we reach the end of our ropes? When life brings something so painful, so devastating that it feels like you’ve gone beyond what you can humanly endure, what then? We can believe that the one who has carried us from the day of our birth will continue to carry us all the days of our lives. We can believe that God can and does bring something good out of our most desperate situations, to bring new life. There are times in our lives when things happen that press us to our limits and beyond. When that happens, we have a choice. We can isolate ourselves and try to escape from it all. Or we can embrace what we’re feeling and move forward in faith that God has a future for us if we can only believe! Blessings! Pastor Fred Brumm, M.Div. THE DEERFIELD NEWS Join us for a Resident Picnic on Wednesday August 18. Please watch for signs in your household for more details. Wellness Thought Exercising with Pain W e often ask at the beginning of classes, “Does anyone have any extraordinary aches or pains – anything that we should be careful of today?” Many chuckle and some respond by saying “How much time do you have . . .?” At least people are still showing up for exercise classes. Sometimes exercise can help with pain management. There are two kinds of pain: acute and chronic. With acute pain, which is sudden and hopefully brief in duration, you would want to stop exercising and seek medical attention. But with some chronic or on-going pain, it may be appropriate to do some exercise. Particularly exercise that helps with flexibility, endurance and/or strength might help if done in moderation and with doctor approval. Many people feel relief from pain after they do some moving about in the warm pool, or if they can take a nice walk, or attend a class to stretch their muscles. Others might find relief in a regular practice of Tai Chi or Yoga. If you are experiencing pain, tell your doctor and talk with him/ her about exercise to see if that might be an option for you. 715-243-3900 www.deerfieldphs.org Page 5
