Edition 169 May 11, 2020 – May 17, 2020 7 DAYS OF ACTION WEBSITE SEVEN WAYS TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE Justice for Ahmaud Arbery: Ask for resignation of DAs Far too frequently, in the United States, horrific crimes motivated by hatred and bigotry occur, leaving people of good conscience reeling, however nothing ever seems to happen to move the pendulum of justice closer to ending the atrocities. How many more people of color must die before everyone says, Not One More? Ahmaud Arbery, a 25-year-old African American man, was jogging in broad daylight, near his neighborhood in Brunswick, GA, on February 23. He was chased down by two community members, shot multiple times, and killed. Without the recent release of a graphic, detailed video of this horror, pressure from activists and concerned citizens, and the involvement of the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, Ahmaud would have been forever vilified as an “attempted burglar,” not worthy of living, let alone due process. The video captures the first shot being fired before the perpetrators even approach Ahmaud. The white vigilantes deemed themselves judge, jury, and executioner as they chased, attacked, and shot Mr. Arbery dead. This was a racially motivated act of hatred and terror. The insidious systemic abuse and coverup continued when District Attorney George Barnhill, who later recused himself from the case, defended Ahmaud’s murderers by making the outrageous claim that Travis McMichael acted in self-defense and his actions fell within Georgia’s citizen arrest laws. In his letter to the Glynn County police, he stated, "it appears {Travis and Gregory McMichael's} intent was to stop and hold this criminal suspect until law enforcement arrived. Under Georgia law, it is perfectly legal." Barnhill also went on to state that there was no need for arrest. Because of Barnhill's suggestions to police, two months passed without an arrest or any form of accountability. Enough is enough. We seek justice for the memory of Ahmaud and for his family. We seek an end to systemic injustice – no one should be lost to hatred, bigotry, and senseless violence. Suggested Script: Hi, my name is [NAME]. I am a constituent calling from [CITY/ZIP]. I would like to express my outrage at the murder of Ahmaud Arbery. Vigilante white supremacists should never be allowed to be judge, jury and executioner. Jogging while black should not be a death sentence. Please address the current increase in hate crimes across America and do all you can to challenge the systemic and institutional racism, bias, bigotry, and hatred that leads to death and dehumanization of innocent Americans. Please ask the Department of Justice to file Federal Hate Crime charges against the murderers of Ahmaud Arbery. Thank you for your time and attention.
