Re-Entry Plan Working Document Fall 2020 Implementation of the re-entry plan is subject to change based upon new information and direction from the Chief Medical Officer of Health and Alberta Education. It is developed using the most recent available information related to the COVID-19 pandemic. DRAFT - This document was updated on June 29, 2020 and may be adjusted in response to changing circumstances.
Preface At the Calgary Girls Charter School, we are committed to providing a safe, healthy and rich learning environment for all students and staff; in the re-entry plan for fall 2020 student and staff safety is paramount. The government re-entry plan asks all jurisdictions to consider three scenarios that could exist when the 2020-2021 school year begins in September. The government direction provided in the draft plan that was tabled with schools on June 10, will be updated as circumstances change. Alberta Education is committed to providing the final plan no later than August 1, 2020 to allow us to make any additional adjustments or our planning for the new school year. Therefore, this plan remains fluid and flexible, contingent upon government direction and mandated public health measures. The Minister of Education has asked all school jurisdictions to consider and be prepared for any of these three different scenarios for fall 2020: 1. In-school classes resume (near normal with health measures) 2. In-school classes partially resume (with additional health measures) 3. At-home learning continues (in-school classes are suspended/cancelled) As stated in the Alberta Government Re-Entry document, “The global COVID-19 pandemic is an evolving and unprecedented situation that presents society and the education system with many challenges. Continuing children and student learning in fall 2020 will require everyone in the ECS-12 education system to be nimble in contributing to the success of our children and students.” According to the provincial Re-Entry Plan, Scenario 1, resuming daily in-school classes is the preferred and likely scenario, with near normal operation with health measures. At CGCS our Re-Entry Planning team will continue to work toward the preferred scenario and will also be making contingency plans for the alternative scenarios. We very much look forward to safely returning to in-school classes, and learning and working together for the upcoming school year. 1
Guiding Principles of the Re-Entry Plan 1. Focus on the health, wellness and safety of students and staff through regular connection and support. 2. Align with Alberta Education and Alberta Health Services mandates and guidelines. 3. Provide stable learning schedules with focus on curriculum and social emotional needs of our students. 4. Provide learning approaches and supports that best meet students’ learning needs. 5. Communicate with stakeholders and partners to ensure responsiveness to safety, learning and teaching needs. 6. Utilize tools, technologies and resources to effectively support learning and teaching. 7. Strive to be flexible and adaptable to best meet the needs of our students, families and staff. 8. If there is a Case of COVID-19 in the School The school will work closely with the Zone Medical Officer of Health to ensure safety and security of all students and staff. The Zone Medical Officer of Health will work with the school to quickly: ● Identify cases through easily accessible testing ● Identify close contacts ● Create isolation measures when needed ● Provide guidance for administration to support staff, parents and students in the event of a school based COVID-19 case We will be prepared to provide support for at-home learning in the event that a student or staff member is required to self-isolate. A staff member is required to inform their supervisor if they test positive for COVID19. Parents are to inform the school if their child tests positive for COVID19. Direction from the Zone Medical Officer of Health will prevail in the case of a positive COVID19 case. Communication As the work to prepare for any of the three scenarios continues through the summer, our communication with families will also continue. As the new information provided by the government on August 1, 2020 will dictate our next steps for the re-entry, we will be providing staff and parents with additional information once we are made aware of those specific parameters and requirements. Parents can expect a weekly communication via email commencing August 17, 2020 that will provide greater detail and information about the re-entry process. Our staff is committed to making the re-entry as seamless and ‘normal’ as possible. We all recognize that there will be new protocols and procedures which will become our ‘new normal’, and as a school community, we will do what we do best; we will learn and teach our students those new normal protocols. We will also ensure that communication with parents clearly outlines those expectations and protocols. As is always the case, our communication is two-way and any questions that might surface as we embark upon the new year, will be welcome and addressed. Parent F.A.Q.s - We will develop a resource to answer common questions, in order to support parents’ ability to support students. 6
Staff F.A.Q.s - We will develop a resource to answer common questions, in order to support staff re-entry as well as staff support for students. Final Notes Knowing that much is still up in the air and that we will not know until August 1, when the government makes its announcement regarding which scenario we will be in, we are prepared to respond and pivot as required, to ensure safety and security for students and staff. Between now and then, if you have any questions pertaining to Re-entry, you may submit them to covid19info@calgarygirlsschool.com, with ‘Re-Entry Question’ in the subject line. These questions may become part of the F.A.Q. document that is in development. Please enjoy a safe and healthy summer and we are eager to be safely learning and working together again.
