VOL. 1 | ISSUE 6 2020 THE BULLETIN RHS SCHOOL GARDENING AWARD We have now achieved our Level 4 RHS School Gardening award certificate. To achieve it we had to bake something using produce for our garden. Lorraine and some of the children collected apples and used them to make a delicious apple pie! As well as a certificate we have also been given a Super Seed Bundle of Mr Fothergill's seeds worth over £100! This box is bursting with 47 packets of seeds from tomatoes, carrots and pumpkins to forget-me-nots, poppies and cornflowers, giving us something to sow or harvest all year round. To achieve Level 5 we are planning on hosting a garden party in the summer term so watch this space! SUPPORTING LUKE MORTIMER Luke was a budding 7 year old rugby player, a bundle of joy who even at a young age had embraced life and everyday was a happy day. His whole family was part of the rugby community, with his dad coaching many age grade youngsters and his mum, running a children’s rugby kit recycling stall, so that the young boys and girls, always had the right gear to play and train in.However, whilst the rest of us were buying and wrapping presents ready for Christmas, the families life was turned upside down. On the 13th Dec 2019 Luke fell ill with with Meningococcal Meningitis which is a bacterial disease which if not treated early is a killer. Luke was rushed to hospital and with the fantastic work of our nurses, doctors and specialist care teams Luke was transferred to Sheffield Children’s Hospital Luke’s and his young life was saved, however the disease has taken its toll on his little body. Over the last 28 days Luke has endured many hours of surgery to remove both hands, left at mid forearm and right just below the elbow, he has also lost both legs below the knee. He has proven he is a fighter, however his life and the life of his mum, dad and his 10 year old big brother will never be the same.Luke and his family will now face many challenges." We had a 'wear your pyjama's for Luke' day across the whole setting and raised a phenomenal £170, thank you to everyone who donated, this along with many locally hosted fundraising events, is a way to help Luke and his family." VOL. 1 | ISSUE 6 2020 THE BULLETIN FOREST SCHOOL'S LEADER ASSESSMENT Alison is now half way through her Forest School's Leader qualification (Level 3). At this half way point she needed to go to Bewerley Park Centre for Outdoor Education to be assessed on her practical skills, which she passed with flying colours! As part of the assessment she had to demonstrate that she could use a variety of open and closed bladed tools safely e.g. loppers and bow saw. Erect a shelter and tie a variety of knots. Demonstrate that she could boil water in a Kelly Kettle, light a fire and manage it safely. She cooked a three course meal on the open fire and finally had to deliver a session to the other candidates Some of Alison's taking the assessment with her. creations Now that the practical assessment has been completed we can incorporate tool use and can light fires as part of our Forest School provision. GET TO KNOW OUR TEAM I’m Natalie, I have worked at Brougham Street Nursery for a year. I started off in Toddlers and moved into Nursery School in September 2019. I have lots of experience working in nurseries, I spent eight years at my previous job working with children aged 0-4. I completed my apprenticeship in childcare in 2012 and have since gone on to study Early Childhood Studies at Blackburn university where I am currently in my final year. I live up in Settle and have done for 21 years. I live on my own but my parents, younger brother and two dogs live up the road! In my spare time I like to spend as much time as possible with my friends, family and partner. We spend a lot of time walking at the beach. I also enjoy going to the cinema and exploring new areas of the country. We love to hear from parents throughout the year and have an open door policy for parents/guardians to contact us with any questions or concerns. Alison, Ann, Lorraine, Natalie and Michael
