MEET Deanna My husband, John, and I have always had a love for water. Almost 11 years ago we brought home our first Leonberger, and we were delighted when Medley showed promise in the water, even at just eight weeks old. With the bias that a dog is happiest when he has a job, I researched what types of work activities were available. Water rescue work seemed to be the best fit for our family. I read Judi Adler’s book, Water Work, Water Play, got involved with our area’s Newfoundland club summer weekend training sessions, and I attended a seminar hosted by Colonial Newfoundland Club. I was hooked forever! That summer is still so vivid in my mind, like a first kiss, love, or pup; It’s forever in my fabric, just like their fur. That summer I did a lot of listening, watching, photographing, learning, Banner 2019 WRD qualification and experimenting at home. Since then, I’ve spent hundreds of hours devoted to training water work, both at home in Pittsburgh on land with adjunctive devices, in the Pittsburgh rivers, and in many lakes alone and with our “Water Work Village”, the Penn-Ohio Newfoundland Club. I’ve benefited from strong mentors and have learned from each and every day of training and each water test that I’ve exhibited in or stewarded for. As of today, I have exhibited in five US states and at all three water work levels. This journey has inspired my philosophy of the fundamental principle of water work, ‘Take, Hold, & Give’. Take the opportunity; Hold the bond sacred; Give praise and love liberally. It’s my intent that during our Old West Newfoundland Club 2021 seminar weekend, we will explore and illustrate the principles that give working in the water with the dogs we love such grand meaning. Thank you for this wonderful opportunity! ~ Deanna Alko
