Writer-in-Residence Program a Tremendous Success The Writer-in-Residence Program with New York Times best-selling author, George O'Connor, was a huge success! For students in the 3rd, 4th and 5th grade, the week kicked off with a dynamic and energetic presentation on the Greek gods. Students learned about character development while watching George do live illustrations of several characters from his Olympians series. Throughout the rest of the week, enthusiasm filled the classrooms as students participated in several workshops to create their own graphic novel/comic. Students learned the art of character design and how to create the groundwork for their own sequential story. With this knowledge and their own creativity, students really enjoyed the process of writing their very own graphic novel/comic. In addition to the excitement in the upper grades, all students in kindergarten, 1st and 2nd grade enjoyed an interactive assembly with George. The students had a blast watching George draw several of the characters from his popular picture books and learned how everyday moments can inspire a great story.
Field Trip Fun The Friends of Buker enjoys subsidizing field trips throughout the year, making them more affordable to our school community. Last week, our 4th graders traveled to the Discovery Museum in Acton for a day filled with exploration and experimentation in a STEM- based environment. Many thanks to our teachers and parent chaperones for helping to make this field trip a great success!

Ways to Support Buker as You Shop Love shopping on Amazon? Then why not sign up for AmazonSmile and support the Friends of Buker! The program is completely FREE to enroll in, and directly benefits the Friends of Buker whenever you shop on Amazon. When shopping, just switch over to smile.amazon.com and your Amazon experience will remain the same. The totals for last year’s Box Tops for Education were amazing! Let’s keep cutting those Box Tops and remember that the class with the most Box Tops WINS an end-of-the-year pizza party. So far, Mrs. Orlando’s 3rd grade class is in the lead! Please send clipped Box Tops into school in a Ziploc bag or envelope. You may also glue or tape them to a Box Tops collection sheet, which you may download from the following page on the Friends of Buker website: http://www.friendsofbuker.net/store-rewards-programs/ Please be sure to label each bag or envelope with your child’s teacher’s name to ensure your child’s class gets credit for those Box Tops. Buker is now participating in an incredible local program that allows us to earn FREE classroom equipment and supplies! Here’s how you can help: • Shop at any Crosby’s Marketplace or Henry’s Fine Foods from now through March 31, 2019. • Save your receipts. Drop them to Chris Petrou at the front office or send them into school with your child. • That’s it! No amount or purchase is too small: a pack of gum, a loaf of bread, ice cream for dessert … it all counts and adds up to supplies and equipment for Buker (alas, alcohol purchases don’t count – but send the receipt in if it has anything else on it – we won’t judge!) Just like sending in Box Tops, this is an easy way to take everyday spending and make it benefit Buker. If you have any questions, please reach out to Lexie Riordan at Alexandra_Riordan@hotmail.com. Stop & Shop A+ School Rewards are points that customers earn with each purchase made using their Stop & Shop Card. At the end of each month, the points earned are used in a calculation to determine Buker’s cash total. Here is how to easily register your Stop & Shop card to ensure Buker receives credit for your purchases: (You will need your 13-digit card number found on the back of the card.) • Visit www.stopandshop.com, click on SIGN IN, MANAGE MY ACCOUNT, SAVINGS & REWARDS, to create or log into your online account. • If you have a Stop & Shop Card but do not know your 13-digit Stop & Shop Card number, call the Stop & Shop Card Hotline at 1-877-366-2668 and select Option #1. The representatives will be able to provide you with your Stop & Shop Card number. • If you need a Stop & Shop Card, please visit your local store to obtain one or click here: I NEED A STOP & SHOP CARD. It can take up to seven days for a new card to get into the system. After your first purchase, it can take an additional seven days to see the points from your initial purchase appear on your receipt.
