The School of Dentistry The School of Dentistry was founded in 1899 when the Tacoma College of Dental Surgery and the Oregon College of Dentistry merged to become the North Pacific Dental College. Upon incorporation into the Oregon State System of Higher Education in 1946, the school became the University of Oregon Dental School. The schools of dentistry, medicine and nursing united in 1974 to create the University of Oregon Health Sciences Center. It was not until 1981 that the state Legislature changed the name to the Oregon Health Sciences University, now Oregon Health & Science University. The School’s exceptional faculty is committed to facilitating the education of each individual student by bringing their expertise, encouragement and guidance to the learning environments of the classroom, pre-clinical laboratory and patient care clinic. The staff exemplifies a helpful and caring attitude that is so important in the evolutionary growth from student to professional. An active research environment prevails with many productive research scientists on the faculty who enhance teaching and treatment programs with their own firsthand investigations in both clinical and basic sciences. All this provides an integrated, caring and educationally solid program and extends the opportunity for all students to achieve the professional goals they seek. The School of Dentistry shares the mission of Oregon Health & Science University to provide educational programs, basic science and clinical research, and high quality patient care and community outreach. We strive to foster an environment of mutual respect where the free exchange of ideas can flourish while preparing graduates to deliver compassionate and ethical oral health care.
Academic and Service Adornments A cord is an intertwined decorative rope with tassels worn with graduates’ regalia to indicate their achievement of various academic and service honors. The School of Dentistry grants academic honors based on a rank derived from a total number of letters of commendation. Letters of commendation acknowledge superior student performance in each of their courses. The colors of the academic cords are noted below. Gold cords signify highest honor Silver cords signify great honor Bronze cords signify honor OHSU recognizes graduating students who meet university-merit criteria in diversity and inclusion achievement with a service cord. The color of the diversity cord is light blue to signify unity and perseverance and to recognize students for their contribution to diversity and inclusion. This service cord is co-sponsored by the Office of the Provost and the Center for Diversity and Inclusion. To show respect and gratitude for the students who have made an unwavering commitment to the United States of America, OHSU recognizes graduates who are veterans and active duty by offering a veteran honor cord. This red, white and blue cord signifies their service to the country as well as offers encouragement for their personal and academic achievement. A graduation stole is a decorative vestment worn by students who are members of various organizations for the purpose of denoting outstanding achievement in academics. Those students wearing a navy blue stole trimmed in lilac with gold embroidery have been inducted into the Omicron Kappa Upsilon, National Dental Honor Society, Delta Chapter.
Inclusion in this program does not, by itself, denote proof of graduation from OHSU. Graduates named in this program either completed degrees at OHSU in the period July 1, 2020-June 18, 2021, or are recommended by their school to satisfy minor degree requirements by September 1, 2021.
