The trip always begins on a Wednesday At 6:00 p.m. hours we left the central Badnerbahn train station in Eichenstrasse for Hegyshalom.
We arrived at the Hungarian border - No passport control - we continued on our way at 19:15 and stopped shortly thereafter for a short coffee break at a motorway restaurant. We reached the Hungarian- Romanian border at about 2:30 a.m. and the border formalities required about an hour. Underway in Romania After the passport control, we continued our trip east via Oradea, Cluj Napoca. We stopped for a picnic breakfast after Cluj and then continued on via Turda, Tirgu Mures to Sighisoara. There was very little traffic so we were in Sighisoara - “Dracula City” - mid-morning and had plenty of time to explore this interesting town before driving on with a stop to have a picnic lunch and relax in a meadow on the high plateau before arriving in Csiksereda. Invitation to breakfast in Cluj Napoca / Klausenburg While having breakfast at a parking place near Cluj, we were visited by a mother and her children who were hungry. We shared our breakfast with them and afterwards gave the children some clothes and toys. . Near Klausenburg / Cluj Napoca Roma famiy from Cluj Napoca In Csikszereda again In May 6, 2011, we arrived without problems at 3:30 pm. After our long trip, we were very glad to have arrived at our destination safely. We went to our lodgings, the motel “Csillag”. At 6 p.m. we had supper in the boarding school restaurant at Sinmartin. Our friends welcomed us warmly. We exchanged news. The main topic was the terrible increase in prices since Romania had become a member of the EU in January 2007. They had a delicious warm meal prepared for us. Even though we were very tired, we sacked sweets for the children and for the “Easter egg hunt” before going to our motel for the night, Spring or fall – it is Friday Breakfast was at 7:00 a.m. Our first stop of the day was at 8:30 a.m. at the elementary school in Csiksomlyo – and we didn’t want to be late. We were met at the door by a group of children, who led us into the schoolyard - into their festively decorated schoolroom. They always had a program of songs and poems prepared for us. We played games with them in their playground outside in the fresh air. The high point of the festivities for the children is always when each child receives one of the colorful boxes you made for them. We had to say good-bye all too soon. Our Projects in Romania – thanks to YOUR generous help – are very successful. Your help arrives at the right time. The next stop was Sinmartin. There were many preparations for the reception for the foster parents. After Heinz gave a few words of greeting from the Team and sponsors, the Team members introduced themselves while the food for the buffet was being prepared, Outside, George and the “strong women and men” unloaded the banana boxes, family sacks and the colored boxes so that they could be given to the children and their caregivers in an orderly manner. At 10:00 all the preparations were finished and we could begin the festivities with the foster mothers and the children in their care. After enjoying bread, cheese, lunch meat, pickles, nut and poppy seed cake as well as juice and coffee, the Team members personally delivered the gifts that YOU had provided to the orphans and their foster families. We were asked to pass on to you their thanks for these greatly needed food boxes.
Sinmartin Heinz paying the milk bill Reception for the foster parents Simply magnificent! It is admirable to see how understanding the people in Sinmartin are and that they are prepared to care for children whose parents gave them away. These children would not be accepted by society but the foster parents often raise them under difficult personal circumstances. Again this time we heard from the foster mothers how difficult is it to provide their families with the basic necessities. The country is still experiencing a difficult economic situation. The little money that the people earn – the government voted to reduce incomes – is barely enough to live on. The retired people have been hit very hard by the high prices. In many cases, they receive a minimum pension of only 35 to 48 Euros monthly while the food prices are almost the same as here in Austria. Unemployment is high. Over 1 million unemployed have next to no chance of finding a job. A nurse earns 120 Euro monthly. How should things function? Romania is badly in debt. The state has hardly enough to pay pensions and salaries. I think that you, ladies and gentlemen, can give them hope in this bleak situation with your personal assistance. Before saying “good-bye”, we paid the milk bill for the past 6 months and took care of other necessary business. Milk project In Sinmartin the112 orphans are cared for in foster families. A pediatrician and 5 nurses ensure that the children receive proper care. Projekt Tausendfüssler – Project Centipede provides, with YOUR help, a sufficient amount of fresh milk so that each child receives ½ liter milk every day. In addition, twice a year each child receives a “Banana box“ with baby food und hygiene products needed for daily care that YOU put together with love. Naturally the little ones also receive a colourful box with toys. As a “thank you” for the job they are doing, the foster mothers receive from us a carrier bag filled with special items. At 3:00 p.m. we arrived at the elementary school in Erdöalja. The children know what to expect when we visit them. The teacher greeted us with the words “They have learned songs and poems for you”. The little ones performed at their best as they sang songs and recited the poems they had learned. They gave us pictures they had drawn and flowers. They danced for us and invited us to dance with them. Then “Uncle” Heinz explained the proper way to brush their teeth and with the help of the children, demonstrated how to do it using a large set of teeth and toothbrush. At the end of our visit, we gave each of them one of the colorful boxes containing chocolate, wafer cookies, “gummi-bear”, soap, tooth brush and tooth paste, coloring book and colored pencils, that YOU had prepared for them and other gifts. We were filled with happiness seeing these youngsters leave the school with beaming faces, carrying YOUR gifts to hurry home and tell their families about the big festival in the school. Yes, it would be wonderful if you could experience the beaming children's faces The elementary school in Csinód is still not reachable. The road was partially washed out by heavy rains and it has not yet been possible to repair it. One of the school teachers, who has a 4-wheel-drive car, accepted the gifts for the children and transported them to the village that lies up the mountain at an altitude of 1500 m.
Elementary school Erdöalja Elementary school Csiksomyo Special school Olteni Saturday The weather was beautiful as we left at 8:00 a.m. for Olteni. After a 1½ hours’ drive, we arrived at the special school. Immediately after arriving, we unloaded our bus. Then during a small breakfast – coffee, tea and “Kürtös- Kalács”, a kind of donut – we discussed the situation in their home. We learned what has happened since our last visit and that due to the agriculture project we had started 18 years ago, the orphanage is now nearly self sufficient for its food needs. At the present time, 105 children live in this home and they receive training as gardeners, agricultural workers or hand workers in addition to their school studies. After our “sweet breakfast” we had the opportunity to see the renovated children’s rooms and had the impression that the children live in harmony with their caregivers. Some of the Team had hidden sacks of sweets in the orchard for the “Easter egg hunt”. They had been looking forward to this event. The sweets were collected in boxes so that each would get his/her share, even those who were not there. Afterwards, the young adult Team members demonstrated and then taught them how to do a line dance to country western music. The active program was ended and we started distributing YOUR colorful boxes to the children and young people.
Tug -o`- war Green house Olteni Rosa made her new moccasins Our “Perseverance Project” is going well. Some of the young people are very adept and thanks to the material provided by the firm Reiter, have become “profis” in working with leather. Dinner is planned for 6:00 p.m. Usually, after our dinner we spoke with the head nurse Rege about the current social and economic situation in Romania. We learned that the problems the people had just to survive were becoming greater. By “night bus” to Vienna We bid farewell to our friends and headed for the Romanian-Hungarian border. 16 hours later we arrived safely back in Vienna. Heartfelt Thanks Dear Contributors, ladies and gentlemen, friends of our Projects, a heartfelt thanks for your generous support for the children! During the past 21 years you have, with great involvement and with much love, not only helped to make it possible for over 5700 children to have food and all the things children need to grow up, but also, very importantly, you made their faces beam.
