Page | 04 WELCOME Margaret Bousquet NCBI CYP Programs Coordinator Welcome to NCBI’s Children and Young Person’s (CYP) Services’ calendar of events for 2020! We are delighted to be able to continue to increase our offer of workshops and events delivered by our highly trained staff in the Children and Young Person’s Team. Please take a look at the range of events which are described in detail throughout the calendar. We also invite you to get to know some of the team by reading their bios inside. The events listed in the 2020 calendar have been put together based on feedback from children and young people and their families that used our services and/or took part in activities in 2019. There is a demand to continue to support the development of independent living and travel skills, assistive technology and peer support. In addition, parents requested more resources to develop self-advocacy and self-determination skills which we are infusing throughout our workshops. Our learning through play sessions, based in Tallaght, provide direct emotional and practical supports to parents and families of children under 4. We trialled this event in other locations outside of Dublin in 2019 and will continue to do so based on demand, so keep a check on our website for updates. We have also developed a residential based “Transitioning to Senior Cycle” event which is aimed at supporting students to self-determine their training and resource needs as they progress through second level. It will support the development of assistive technology, self-advocacy, independent travel and work related skills. We are indebted to our partners, collaborators and fantastic group of volunteers to be able to deliver high quality supports and services and wish to express our appreciation in advance. On behalf of myself and the team, we thank you for your continued support and look forward to seeing you at an event in 2020. Margaret Bousquet NCBI CYP Programs Coordinator
2020 NCBI Calendar of Events Page | 05 Leanne Taylor Hi I’m Leanne Taylor and I work in the south east providing assessments and interventions to children and young people. It’s really important for me to understand a young person’s functional vision so that I can assist them and others to develop strategies and find resources in order to carry out activities of daily living. Being aware of individual needs in terms of lighting, colour and contrast can help determine the right solutions, enhance a person’s residual visual and reduce visual fatigue. I really enjoy this part of my role, discovering what works best and using this knowledge to support others. There is also coffee and chat time for parents to share information, experiences and life hacks! ‘The support the group creates makes the process more manageable.’

2020 NCBI Calendar of Events Page | 07 Daniel Dunne My name is Daniel Dunne and I work as an assistive technology trainer with NCBI. Most of my work involves providing direct advice and tech support on the range of aids available. These can be vision impairment specific like Braille devices or magnification software or demonstrating accessibility features in mainstream technology. The most important aspect of technology support is getting a comprehensive assessment and opportunity to trial solutions that could work for you. Technology is here to stay so I try to demonstrate how it can support people with sight loss in all aspects of their life which includes training/education, work or socialising. Preparing for Independence Residential Camp Ages 10+ Aimed at students who are learning non visually, all of these camps provide training and support to develop the necessary compensatory skills required for independent living. These include accessing public transport, shopping, kitchen and home management skills, assistive technology for life etc. There is a particular focus on self-directed learning which supports students to understand their resource ‘A very good balance needs and how to self-advocate. Of course we always of everything – make time for the fun stuff too! independence skills/fun activities’ “One of the best things about this group is just getting to hang out together, learning new stuff like tech solutions and being there for one another, these small things matter a lot”

Parents and siblings are catered for and will have opportunities to meet other families informally and in group sessions to share experiences and ideas.
2020 NCBI Calendar of Events Page | 09 Aoife Buckley I’m Aoife Buckley and I am based in Cork covering the south of Ireland. As well as proving a range of assessments and interventions I need to be always thinking and planning ahead of where a child or young person is currently. Transitions such as going to secondary school or college are really exciting times and being ready to make that move involves a good deal of upskilling. I help support students to become familiar with their new environment whether that involves using a mobility aid or not. Having a good working memory, using residual vision and learning how to request or refuse assistance are really important skills to have when facing these new challenges. ‘She gained a lot of self-confidence, she was so happy and realised that it’s not only her in her situation and she learned a lot in using gadgets that will be a big help in her day to day activities’ **New** Preparing for the transition to senior cycle This is a new event to the 2020 calendar and is residential based taking place over 3 days and 2 nights. It is aimed at students who will have completed the junior cert or TY in June 2020. The focus will be on independent travel, self-advocacy, assistive technology, peer support, college supports, and managing own support needs.

I recently joined the NCBI team and have been involved in coordinating our “Learning through play” sessions. I am passionate about ensuring children have access to high quality early interventions. My work brings me in close contact with families often very soon after receiving a diagnosis of vision impairment. This can be a very difficult time for families, managing hospital appointments and figuring out what is needed for their child. “Learning through play” is based on providing an informal session for parents to talk to staff and other parents while also learning about how they can understand their child’s vision and support their development.

The workshop is delivered via fun and exciting games and activities where children can be facilitated to maximise their learning in a peer supported environment.

2020 NCBI Calendar of Events Page | 17 Marilyn Lawlor I’m Marilyn Lawlor and I am based in Limerick supporting children and families in the Mid-West. I work collaboratively with parents and young people to help them identify their goals. We look at the challenges a person is having with completing activities of daily living with low or no vision and develop strategies, find resources and solutions for managing these. It might include making a snack or preparing and cooking a meal, reading print or telling others that you have a vision impairment. One of the most important life skills that a person with sight loss needs is self-advocacy, this supports people to identify their strengths, confidently express their needs and determine their own solutions. Braille Information Workshop This workshop is aimed at parents and education support staff looking for information on Braille. The event will bring together people with knowledge and ‘It really took the experience of Braille from different perspectives mystery out of including the learner, teacher and assistive Braille for me.’ technology trainer. Aspects covered include pre Braille, activities and resources to support learning, Braille equipment and technology. Caimin Fox Hi there, my name is Caimin Fox and I work out of our Dundalk office covering the surrounding counties. It is essential that children and young people with sight loss and their families are fully supported at both a practical and emotional level to be able to cope with the impact of their sight loss. My colleagues and I work with families at a pace that suits them by adopting a person centred and individual response. Each family will have access to their own support networks and resources and have different coping strategies, we try to help families navigate this journey by listening, responding and signposting.
Page | 18 “My son had such an amazing experience – loved every second of it, friends for life and so much more confident playing soccer at home with his club.” – Parent 2019 Camp Abilities – Children aged 10 to 14 years Camp Abilities is a 5 day residential, sport and physical activity camp for children with vision impairments. At Camp, children have the opportunity to try new sports and activities they might not have had the chance to do in the past. Chances are children will not only find something they really enjoy, but their self-esteem will increase, often giving them the confidence to advocate for themselves in their own community. Since our first Camp Abilities in Ireland, campers have taken part in rock climbing, canoeing, kayaking, orienteering, soccer, goal ball, judo, swimming, horse riding… and many, many more!
