Why Study Theology? The Gift of His Word SHASHAMENE THE BIBLE IN AMHARIC “After covering scripture on how God is all-powerful, Every morning of the training, Anita Paulsen observed present everywhere and all-knowing, we had a time of the same habits by each attendee: they would sit down praise and worship - worshipping God for who He is. and take 30 seconds to pray before getting out their Bible and notebook. Anita commented: “It is really As Pastor Nate Shinn says, Why do we study Theology? humbling to observe this consistent pattern.” So we can worship Him better.” - Joel Madson (shared by Kathy Madson) Introducing Elijah and Meredith Brumwell Welcome our newest staff members, Elijah and Meredith Brumwell! The Brumwell’s are excited to join the GTN team to teach in accordance with best educational practices, providing Spir- it-led, biblical, and practical education to under-resourced pastors abroad. Elijah’s calling into ministry was accompanied by a vision to equip pastors and teachers, especially those who do not have access to seminary education, to confidently preach the Word of God. During and after seminary (M.Div., ThM, Dallas Theo- logical Seminary), he pastored in local churches for several years until he and Meredith felt the Lord calling them back to this original vision – now with pastoral ministry experience from which to draw. The Brumwell’s have contacts in various countries around the world and have felt particularly led by the Lord to serve the people of Japan, the second-largest unreached people group in the world. Their calling and vi- sion has only been confirmed through a united mind as a couple, godly counsel, holy desire, and a real need. The Brumwell’s have been married for six years, and currently reside in the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex with their lovely 3-year-old daughter, Isabella, and goldendoodle, Sherlock. Join us in welcoming them to the GTN family!
Update From the President David Hesselgrave served as emeritus professor at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School (now retired) and was co-founder of the Evangelical Missiological Society. Also a well-known missions author, he made the following observation: “In many ways the selection and training of leaders are the most important aspects of church planting because these individuals will not only manage church affairs, but they will also model the faith for good or ill.” Moreover, this modeling of the Christian faith impacts the lives of hundreds, if not thousands, of people. GTN remains committed to the belief that one of the most effective ways to see a nation reached and disci- pled with the Gospel of Jesus Christ is by training the indigenous pastors and leaders. These individuals— who already know the language, customs, and culture—can then go on to train their congregations to carry out the Great Commission throughout their communities, cities, and nations. The Global Front and COVID As the world begins to thaw from ‘frozen’ international travel last year to greater global movement, GTN staff are now beginning to be able to travel to some countries throughout the Majority World. Many regions remain closed due to seriously high levels of COVID, but little by little, movement towards opening is beginning to happen. In the meantime, our staff are busy doing as much (if not more) training via Zoom all over the world. We contin- ue to leverage the best digital resources to continue training pastors and leaders globally. One example of this occurred last month, when Joel Madson spent every night from 9:00 p.m. to 1:00 a.m. (PST) providing training via Zoom. This week-long training time involved a group of 20 pastors in Tajikistan. Even with the wonderful technological tools available to us today, we would still “prefer to visit…and talk…face to face, so that our joy may be made complete” (2 John 12 NIV). When it comes to teaching and training others, nothing compares to “face to face” interaction. It was for this rea- son that God sent His one and only Son, in the flesh, to show us what the Father is like (John 14:9). In fact, one of the names for Jesus is Immanuel, meaning “God with us.” Thank you once again for your partnership in helping to equip and encourage the next generation of pas- tors and leaders throughout the Majority World. We could not do this ministry without you! You are making a significant difference in the lives of tens-of-thousands of people who are now receiving solid biblical and theological equipping from their pastors, who received training from GTN. The “ripple effect” contin- ues outward and is impacting entire communities, cities and nations for God’s glory! Soli Deo Gloria! In His Grip and All for His Glory, Paul R. Madson Founder and President 2 Timothy 2:2
4th Quarter Living Encouragement to live fully for God’s Kingdom all the way to the end “There are no sunset years for the Christian. Until the day you die, you have a race to run and a ministry to finish…. So, straighten your back. Open your eyes. Brace your shoulders. And cry out, ‘I will not waste it!’” (John Piper) “David, after he had served the purpose of God in his own generation, fell asleep and was laid with his fathers.” (Acts 13:36 ESV) “The two most important days in your life are the day you are born and the day you find out why.” (Mark Twain) “...life is fragile and death is inevitable. We don’t know the number of days we will have, nor can we choose how easy or hard our path. To quote the wisdom of Gandalf: ‘All you have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to you.’” (Brett McCracken) “...one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and reaching forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 3:13-14 ESV) “A few years ago, Sens. Charles E. Grassley (R-Iowa) and Patrick J. Leahy (D-Vt.) established unusu- al benchmarks for deciding whether to run for reelection in 2022, potential six-year terms that would end with Grassley in his mid-90s and Leahy in his late 80s. ‘If I can run three miles four times a week, I’ll be running for reelection,’ Grassley, now 87, said at the time. His office pointed to an interview with Iowa media in which he explained that he ran 13 straight days during his recent asymptomatic bout of covid-19, although his morning runs are now just 2 miles.” (“Senate’s octogenarians face the age question” by Paul Kane, The Washington Post, December 2020) “We know [the Apostle] John, likely in his 80’s or even older, was still serving his brothers and sisters in the Lord. Again, Bible scholars estimate Anna was anywhere from 84 to 105 years old, and yet she ‘continued to spend every day praying at the temple (Luke 2:36-37).’” (Dave Maddox) “Quit living as if the purpose of life is to arrive safely at death.” (Anonymous) “All I want now is to preach the gospel, die and be forgotten.” (Count Zinzendorf) Global Training Network (623) 217-3867 P.O.
