Council Meeting Highlights
July 10, 2018

Re gular Me e ting Summary:

1. T he T own Council accepted a USDA Rural Business Development Grant in the amount
of $99,256 for the Wayfinding Project.
2. Master Police Officer Jordan Cutchins was recognized for obtaining the Advanced Law Enforcement Certification from the
North Carolina Education and T raining Standards Commission.
3. Public Utilities Director T ed Credle and Water Plant Superintendent Dale Boyette were presented with the North Carolina

Department of Environmental Quality Division of Water Resources award, signifying that the T own of Smithfield Water
Plant received the 2017 Area Wide Optimization Award.
4. T he T own Council denied Special Use Permit Request SUP 18-07, Baldovinos Event Space.
5. T he T own Council authorized staff to apply for a Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) for Housing
Rehabilitation and approved Johnston, Harnett, Lee Community Action to serve as the T own's housing selection committee.
6. T he Council tabled a request to approve Resolution #619 (06-2018) Closing a portion of North Second Street.
7. T he T own Council approved the Consent Agenda.
8. T he T own Council approved amending the FY 2018-2019 Fee Schedule due to recent increases by Johnston County for
tipping fees for solid waste services and for wastewater treatment.
9. T he T own Council approved amending the FY 2018-2019 Fee Schedule as it related to SRAC rates for T own of Smithfield
Employees and Johnston County School Employees. Rates will be reverted back to the FY 2017-2018 rates for these two
classifications while staff determines if the SRAC membership could be at no cost to all full-time T own of Smithfield
employees.
10. T he T own Council approved entering into an agreement with Envirolink for the purpose of performing an analysis that
will be the basis of the beginning of a discussion regarding the implementation of System Development Fees

T he T own Council regularly meets the first T uesday of each month beginning at 7:00pm at the T own Hall Council Chambers
located at 350 East Market Street - unless rescheduled. T he next Regular Council Meeting is scheduled for T uesday, August 7,
