A Taste of Syston History Syston probably came into existence during the Anglo Saxon period. In spite of its position next to a major Roman road, the Fosseway, and proximity to two sizable rivers there is little evidence of earlier habitation. The origin of the name Syston is in dispute but some believe it may have been after the Angel, Sigehae who gave his name to a farmstead on the site which later grew into a village. It is possible he came to the area in the sixth century as there is evidence of colonisation in the Wreake Valley at this time. St Peter and St Paul Church early twentieth century The church is dedicated to Saint Peter and Saint Paul and their combined emblems of a crossed sword and keys are variously displayed in the church. These emblems are also used by the St Peter and St Paul Aided Primary School and the Town Council. Syston retains many of its original thatched roofed cottages but some were regretfully pulled down in less enlightened times and others had the roofs altered to local slate. This photograph is of the Community Centre taken after re-opening in May 2002. Much of the information above has been taken from 'Syston Past', a book published by Syston Historical Society. The writer is grateful for the use of this material. TJG Syston Community Centre 2019 Syston – East Midlands in Bloom 2019 Page 3 of 38
Wildflower Areas/Environmental Responsibility Syston started wildflower planting schemes in 2017 in Central Park; we have now extended this to the cemetery and the closed churchyard of St Peter & St Paul Church. This is to encourage as diverse a range of insect species as possible, knowing that they form an essential part of the eco-system. Even the smallest wildflower meadow will provide homes and food for many of the creatures that enrich our lives. This can at times, look untidy but we aim to persevere as each year brings better results. Central Park Syston – East Midlands in Bloom 2019 Page 4 of 38

Cleaning up our Closed Churchyard – St Peter & St Paul Church Work continues on cleaning up our Closed Churchyard. A Church Yard Panel, comprising of Councillors, the PCC, Church Wardens and members of the public, are continuing their plan to make the Church Yard an attractive place for quiet reflection as well as a beautiful setting for weddings, baptisms and other celebrations. A wildflower area has recently been planted (photo on page 8), trees have been cut back and the iron gate has been repainted. We Love our Trees All our trees were assessed for health, expected life and recommended maintenance by a qualified tree surveyor in 2015; during 2016 and 2017, all recommended tree works were carried out, starting with the more urgent cases through to the advisories. 2018 and 2019 have seen the re-surveying of all trees in our parks and areas of high footfall. Trees in Central Park As with the original survey, all trees identified as requiring Urgent, Essential or Moderate Action works are being maintained. Syston – East Midlands in Bloom 2019 Page 9 of 38

A further 90 were given to the Council for planting in the new cemetery. 5000 Crocuses from Rotary Club 5000 purple bulbs from Rotary Club as part of their Greening Grey Britain for Health and Happiness campaign, planted by Tesco employees in 2017, continue to grow and thrive in Central Park. Planted out by Tesco employees last year, this Spring the Crocuses continued to flourish. Environmental Responsibility Syston – East Midlands in Bloom 2019 Page 10 of 38
Recycled Plaswood Logs for Edging Borders We started replacing all our edging borders with more environmentally friendly recycled Plaswood logs. The logs look very much like wood but are made from recycled materials, need no maintenance and are guaranteed for 90 years. Syston – East Midlands in Bloom 2019 Page 11 of 38

Watermead Development We have a long-term strategy to regenerate Thurmaston and the surrounding communities including Watermead Country Park over the next 15 years. Under the Watermead Regeneration Corridor project an action plan sets out nearly 30 short, medium and long-term goals. Some of the key objectives are to: • improve walking links between the park, Leicester City and Thurmaston and to improve the experience of visitors to the area • develop the public areas in Thurmaston, particularly along Melton Road, to make them more attractive for pedestrians while encouraging the redevelopment of buildings for community, cultural and food and drink users • improve access to Watermead Country Park, add a visitor centre, raise its profile and encourage it to be used for events • encourage more use of the River Soar and Grand Union Canal by adding moorings and making the open spaces around both more attractive • over the long term, encourage high-quality residential, business and leisure development near to Leicester Marina Syston – East Midlands in Bloom 2019 Page 33 of 38
