SYDENHAMS FOOTBALL LEAGUE NEWS 2020/21 EDITION NUMBER 31 QK SOUTHAMPTON FC – THE STORY SO FAR The football club was established in 1972 as part of the sports and social club section of the Southampton Inland Revenue, the club being named after the building where they worked - Queens Keep which was also representative of the nature of the business. At one time the club had the nickname of ‘The Taxmen’ (which was understandably unpopular!). The Queens Keep building was constructed in the 1960s (a fairly typical build from the period) and is located in Cumberland Place, Southampton. The building has since been rebranded as the White Building. The Queens Keep name was retained until 2000 when the club had moved grounds and association with the city rather than the tax office was considered to be the way forward; thus the title became QK Southampton FC, which still recognises the club’s roots. The original ground used is thought to be Millbrook Recreation Ground but, following the first (1972/73) season, the club was able to play at the Civil Service Ground, Malmesbury Road, Shirley which was shared with a number of other civil service teams. The club lost the use of this ground at the close of the 1998/99 season and a move to the present home Lordshill Recreation Ground, Redbridge Lane was made, initially on a ground share basis with another side who subsequently relocated again. Consequently, QK were able to obtain a lease on the ground and have gradually made improvements. The playing surface, at first prone to waterlogging, is now considered to be one of the best in the area. Improvements have been made with a hospitality room and the provision of a toilet block installed close to the pitch with the provision of a spectator stand and floodlighting being longer term projects. The club initially joined the Southampton Junior League in 1972, starting in Division 10. Times were hard at the beginning and double figure defeats were commonplace but the club showed some improvement to avoid being a ‘one season wonder’!! Another second from bottom finish occurred in the second (1973/74) season but the club then quietly moved upwards with four promotions in successive seasons and then into Junior Division 4. Following consolidation in Division 4 and one in Division 3, before relegation back to Division 4, the club moved steadily upwards again. In 1986/87, Queens Keep won the Junior Division 1 title at the very first attempt (adding the Southampton Junior ‘A’ Cup too) to be promoted into the Southampton Senior League. The club spent nine seasons at Senior League level, including five in the Premier Division. They finished third in 1995/96 and gained election into the former Hampshire League. Following a creditable sixth-place finish in the first season in Division 3, (programme cover from that season [1996/97] shown here) the club had a great run-in to finish runners-up in the following (1997/98) campaign. The club soon found themselves back in the bottom division again but by now, with a new home, were in a period of transition and struggled to keep a settled side. On cessation of the Hampshire League in 2004, the club joined the Wessex League but struggled to make an impact in their three seasons of membership. QK then became founder members of the Hampshire Premier League in 2007, with a second place finish in the Senior Division in 2011/12 being the best to date. In 2018/19 the club finished in the second from bottom position in the Senior Division and, although it had always been a relegation spot, QK became the first club to lose their place finishing there and were consigned to play in Division 1. The only cup win so far was the Southampton Junior ‘A’ Cup final in that glorious 1986/87 season, coinciding with the only title success (Junior 1). The club have got to the Hampshire Intermediate Cup Friday, 29 January 2021 Page 5 of 19
SYDENHAMS FOOTBALL LEAGUE NEWS 2020/21 EDITION NUMBER 31 semi-finals in both 2010 and 2011; and in the Southampton Senior Cup the club reached the final at St Mary’s Stadium in 2011 but lost 2-1 to Team Solent. The club reached the semi-final of the Southampton Junior ‘B’ Cup in 1977. In the Hampshire Premier League Cup, the club were semi-finalists in 2010 and reached the final in 2017 but finished as the losing side. The highest score for QK is 18 (v Romsey Rovers, 18-3, Hampshire Junior ‘B’ Cup – October 1975) … the highest margin of victory is 16 (v Ford Sports ‘B’ 16-0 away, in Southampton Junior Division 10 – December 1973) … the heaviest defeat is 1-18 (at home to Shirley Warren ‘C’, also in Southampton Junior Division 10 – September 1972) … the club were awarded with the FA Standard Charter in November 2010, and now have a sound infrastructure which includes two adult men’s, ladies and also aged-group teams. BLAST FROM THE PAST MATCH REPORT- HAMPSHIRE SENIOR CUP FINAL THURSDAY 30 APRIL 2009 VT FC 0 FLEET TOWN 1 [Right: the teams come out for the Hampshire Senior Cup final at St Marys Stadium]. Fleet Town put Ryman Division 1 South play off disappointment behind them tonight to take on underdogs VT in the Hampshire Senior Cup final in front of a crowd of 1,242. It was Fleet who had the first chance to open the scoring in the first minute when Lee Webber was called upon to punch clear a Tom Bird cross. However both sides made use of the big playing area and VT were able to test the north Hampshire sides defence with some telling crosses in for Paul Sales, but the veteran striker was well marshalled by the defence. On 14 minutes Ryan Ashford’s curling left foot shot was not cleared and went out for a throw. Tyronne Bowers’ throw was flicked on by Sales but Warren Hunt was only able to mis-time his header and Dave Smalley was able to collect. It was Sales again involved when his knockdown set up Byron Mason, but his shot blazed well over the bar. Fleet had two chances to get the opener when Nathan Smart had a fierce shot turned away by Webber. Tyron Smith also forced a fine stop from Webber with a 30 yard free kick given away by Adam Camfield. HT 0-0 Five minutes into the second period, Bowers was able to make a run at the Fleet defence but was only able to shoot wide of the mark. Friday, 29 January 2021 Page 6 of 19
SYDENHAMS FOOTBALL LEAGUE NEWS 2020/21 EDITION NUMBER 31 VT were on the back foot for most of the second half, but almost caught Fleet on the break when the ball fell for Hunt but Smalley was aware to the danger and palmed the ball away. From the resulting corner Sales flicked the ball from Kevin Brewster on for Ashford but his shot was fired wide. Fleet came back with a couple of chances, Jamie McClurg’s header was only just over the bar. The game was certainly quite open with chances at both ends and Sales had a great chance at the near post to steal the glory from Hunt’s low cross in. With time running out Fleet began to exert their superiority with a headed effort from Hemmings getting the faintest of touches off the bar after a Smith corner. Fleet sub Dan Read then made a pacy run up the right flank, turning the ball in for Smart who’s goal bound shot was turned round for a corner. However with the game entering added on time, and the threat of extra time a very real likelihood. SMART was able to get in a shot from the edge of the box into the top corner to seal victory for the north Hampshire side. TAKING A LOOK AT AMESBURY TOWN Amesbury Football Club was formed as long ago as 1904 and spent many years in local football, primarily in the Salisbury & District Leagues. It is understood that their original ground was in the vicinity of Stonehenge and when they moved from there is unclear, but they have been at their present ground for many years. They had one season in the Wiltshire League in 1958/58 and then joined again in 1972/73 and did not get off to the best of starts, finishing bottom and one from bottom of the table in the first two seasons. In 1978 they achieved Senior status and became founder members of the new Wiltshire County League – formed from the merger of two existing Leagues - and the following season were crowned Champions with Warminster Town in sixth place. In 1984 the Club changed its name to Amesbury Town and for the next fifteen years or so were invariably in the top reaches of the League. They finished third behind Pewsey Vale and Laverstock & Ford and second to Pewsey Vale on another occasion, while two other Clubs always in contention were Pick FC and Sanford. Both were based in Swindon and sadly they both, along with their grounds, have left the footballing scene. In 1990/91 Amesbury took the League Title again and three years later finished runners up to Melksham Town and moved up to the Western League Division One. As well as success in the Wiltshire League they also won the Wiltshire Senior Cup in 1984 and 1994 defeating Swindon Supermarine and Penhill YC respectively. Supermarine at that stage were still in the Hellenic League whilst Penhill, about whom information is limited, were fellow members of the Wiltshire League and also played in the Hellenic League. So, a new era began with elevation to the Western League Division One in 1994/95 and a satisfactory start with a twelfth place finish in the table. One of the problems with the Western League is that geographically Amesbury were very much on the Eastern edge of the League and that first season saw trips to Ilfracombe, Exmouth, Dawlish and Minehead slightly balanced by Warminster, Devizes and Pewsey also being in the Division. The Club had two further seasons in the Western League but finished bottom, twelve points adrift, in 1996/97 and resigned from the League. Friday, 29 January 2021 Page 7 of 19
SYDENHAMS FOOTBALL LEAGUE NEWS 2020/21 EDITION NUMBER 31 Under the terms of the pyramid they should have returned to the Wiltshire League but further success there would have meant promotion again to the Western League which the Club did not want. So,1997/98 saw a return to local football before the following season found the Club heading in a different direction with membership of the Hampshire League Division Three and fourth place behind Clanfield, with current Wessex League Clubs Lymington, Ringwood and Laverstock & Ford also in contention. At the end of the season there was considerable re-organisation of the Leagues and Amesbury found themselves in Division One where they took the title at the first attempt with a host of now Wessex League sides behind them – Blackfield & Langley, New Street, Hythe & Dibden, Lymington, Horndean, Petersfield, Alton and Romsey as well as the short lived West Wight Mayflower. A further four seasons followed at the same level before yet further re-organisation saw them join the Wessex League Division Two in 2004/05. There were twenty two Clubs in the Division, which was won by Lymington, and fifteen of those twenty two are still with us today. Two that have moved on in vastly differing directions are Poole Town and AFC Aldermaston. At the end of the season Division Two became Division One and was Amesbury’s home for the next twelve seasons with an average League placing of thirteenth. They came close to relegation in the second season when they finished 19th (of 22) before finishing fourth in 2014/15 and second a season later, seven points behind Portland. Both Clubs were promoted to the Premier Division with rather contrasting results. Portland topped the Division at the first attempt whilst Amesbury finished in nineteenth place, five points clear of relegation. This however was almost a case off delaying the inevitable as twentieth place the following season saw them return to Division One with all three of the relegated Clubs conceding in excess of 130 goals. To the credit of all concerned they bounced straight back by finishing second to AFC Stoneham but they have since struggled again at the higher level. They have been regular entrants in both the FA Cup and the FA Vase but have never really made their mark in either competition with the seasonal exit always in the preliminary rounds. Having said that they are a well-run Club and Bonnymead Park is the most friendliest of places to visit and Amesbury Town are a valued member of our League. Thanks to Brian Ford and Mark Hilton for their help with information, and we managed to get through the story without a mention of the half time cakes! LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Not that I get any, but here we go with another space filler, two per week so that’s a ready-made 13 week series, here’s the second two. B AFC Bournemouth. A rebrand in the early 70s of Bournemouth & Boscombe Athletic, adopting the Red and Black striped shirt as home colours. Formed as Boscombe way back in 1899 and have played at Dean Court since before the Great War. The Cherries have had a somewhat tumultuous history over the last decade and reached the pinnacle of the national game before relegation at the end of last season. Somewhat tedious that the media have seemingly dropped the AFC prefix. Y Young Boys. Based in Bern, they are arguably one of the most successful Swiss clubs internationally and reached the Semi Final of the European Cup in 1958/59. Club colours are gold and black. They’re currently based at the Stade de Suisse Wankdorf, which is the second largest stadium in the country. Friday, 29 January 2021 Page 8 of 19

Vics lost Minshull early on and Darren Plenty (16 years old) was the substitute. Vics went ahead on 12 minutes when Mark Deacon latched onto a pass down the left and chipped it over the advancing keeper and high into goal. The second goal came ten minutes before half-time and was a superb move which began on the left and switched to the right Friday, 29 January 2021 Page 12 of 19
SYDENHAMS FOOTBALL LEAGUE NEWS 2020/21 EDITION NUMBER 31 with fine passing. Plenty crossed into the box and Binstead keeper Woods stayed on his line, the first effort was blocked but Paul Cade shot firm and high and into the net. It was soon 3-0 when a free- kick was played into the box, an effort came off the bar and John Hazell shot in from close range. HT 3-0 Vics were given a good challenge in the second half and a goal for the Island side looked a possibility. Vics keeper John Simpkins was pulled up for holding the ball too long so a free-kick on the six-yard line was given to Binstead. The free-kick was played short and the visitors netted but, incredibly, the ref made them take it again because the Vics players hadn’t stayed on their line! They got on with the retake and, this time, the shot hit a Vics player (who was on the line) and was scrambled clear. Binstead sub Dave Holton had a superb header that came off the bar and went down but not over the line. That came in the 77th minute and a Vics win was completed six minutes later when they scored their fourth goal. There was a suspicion of offside as both Deacon and Plenty sprinted clear and the former knocked it across to the latter to face the keeper and he tucked it home. FT 4-0 Ryde Sports 2-1 Wroxall West Wight 8-1 Whitecroft & Barton Sports Semi Final Newport IOW 1-0 East Cowes Victoria [at Partlands on 12 March] Ryde Sports 0-5 West Wight Final Newport IOW 2-0 West Wight [at Beatrice Avenue on 27 April] 1988/89 First Round Ryde Sports 4-1 Cowes Sports Westland Aerospace 2-1 West Wight 15th November was a tremendous evening at Partlands as Ryde opened their lights competitively and nothing better than a Gold Cup tie with one of their old Island rivals. A healthy crowd of around 250 turned out. Ryde went in front when Glyn (Chinny) Taylor played the ball through to Gary SPERRY to run through and shoot past Marc Cole in the visitors’ goal. Their second came bang on half-time and was direct from Tim NORTH’s corner which the keeper strayed a little too far to claim and, in trying to adjust his position, could only touch it on its way into the net. An early second half goal put Ryde 3-0 in front when Steve Ryan charged down the right flank and his low cross to the near post was flicked home by SPERRY. Cowes soon got a goal back when a free kick was first pushed up and then pushed against the bar by Ryde keeper Dougie Stephens and this enabled Terry HOPKINS to bundle it over the line. Cowes had a good spell for a while and could have pulled it back further. A lunging header by Matt PORTER from a Tim North cross put the game outside of Cowes’ reach with nine minutes remaining. A note was made of a sporting act as Stephens put the ball into touch to enable an opponent to receive treatment and the ball was thrown back to Ryde when the game restarted (occurred prior to this becoming an expected action). It was also well officiated by Wootton Bridge referee Mr R Farley. Just four days later on the 19th November at Old Road, part of the Norris Castle Estate there was a shock result as an Island side beat a Hampshire League team. Westland had been known as BHC up to the start of this season. The home chairman, in giving me details of his team’s line-up, was confident that they had Friday, 29 January 2021 Page 13 of 19
SYDENHAMS FOOTBALL LEAGUE NEWS 2020/21 EDITION NUMBER 31 ‘enough football in them’ to win the game. Their keeper was Mark West, who was following in his father’s footsteps, the former Everton keeper Gordon West. Westland easily had as much of the first half as their opponents which only had one effort of note for each side but was an interesting tussle. Westland always looked more dangerous on the break and they broke the deadlock in the 72nd minute. It was Ritchie WOODBURN who did it, being put through down the right and he fired home via a deflection off the advancing Mick Blow and low into the far corner. It was difficult to see the visitors getting back in it but, with 83 minutes played, a defender in trying to play the ball back to his keeper, sent it too high and West could only watch in despair as it dipped just inside the far corner for an own goal. It was a freak occurrence. But back came Westland again and struck the winner with a minute left. Mark Hutton beat a defender, got down the left and pulled it back from the goal-line to the near post where Tim HALL took his time to squeeze the ball between the post and keeper and into the near corner. Well done Westland! Thanks to Gary Day for both the stories for the two First Round games shown this season. Phillips gave ‘Port the 19th minute lead with a shot from the wing that had the suspicion of a cross about it, and Taylor settled things early in the second half. In the other contest, it was a repeat of the Final last year, Sports were easy victors but Shanklin held out for the first 40 minutes before Watson scored after a corner. Wheeler made it two just after the break to leave the Island side with a mountain to climb. With ten minutes left Stevens made it three. SYDENHAMS FOOTBALL LEAGUE NEWS 2020/21 EDITION NUMBER 31 The first game under the lights at Westwood Park on 20 January, having only had them inspected and approved earlier in the week by the County FA, and it brought victory after extra time to the hosts over the rivals from across the River Medina. It was all Sports in the first half with several chances to break the deadlock going begging. The hosts were at the time in the Hampshire League with Vics members of the Wessex League so perhaps the result came as a surprise, but on the night, they just deserved to edge it. The winner for the Yachtsmen coming in the second minute of extra time with the winning goal from John BEARD from Steve Ryan free kick that Vics keeper Mark West was unable to hold. Newport IOW 3-1 Brading Town [at Westwood Park on 3 May attendance 204] FROM ORANGE AND BLACK TO BLUE AND WHITE Whilst poring over the football scores in the paper recently a name registered that initially took me back to the Wessex League Cup Final of 2015 between AFC Portchester and Petersfield played at the former’s ground. In the matchday programme was a very well written article, supplied by Portchester, about ANDY RINOMHOTA, one of their players who had come up through the youth ranks and reserves to register some thirty appearances for the Wessex League side at the age of seventeen. He had now been offered a trial at Reading and was immediately offered a contract with the Football League side. He went through the Under 18 and Under 21 sides before progressing to the Under 23 rank, effectively the Club’s reserve side. His initial appearance in the first team was in the EFL Trophy and he made his championship debut in 2018/19 and on the 19th January this year made his 100th appearance for the Club, and now has a contract until the end of the 2022 season. He scored his first goal in April 2019 in the 97th minute at Norwich to earn his side a two all draw (nice to see it is not only the Wessex League that has excessive stoppage time) and has since added three further goals to his tally. He is qualified, through his Father, to play International Football for Zimbabwe and was provisionally named in their squad for the COSAFA Cup in 2018, a Competition open to Countries belonging to The Council of South Africa Football Associations. However, to represent Zimbabwe he would have had to renounce his British Citizenship to obtain a Zimbabwe Passport, and that has not happened. Out of interest the Competition, originally scheduled for Botswana but played in South Africa, saw Zimbabwe go out at the Quarter Final stage to Botswana. Back on home ground so to speak and Andy has already become acquainted with the constant changes that occur at EFL level, having already played under six different managers in his time at Reading, and it is to his credit that he has remained a member of the First Team squad through the frequent upheavals. Those at AFC Portchester never doubted his ability to make the grade and are no doubt delighted at his progress and it is again to the player’s credit that they remember him as a humble, polite and respectful lad and a credit to his team, club and parents. We wish him continued success. Friday, 29 January 2021 Page 18 of 19
SYDENHAMS FOOTBALL LEAGUE NEWS 2020/21 EDITION NUMBER 31 STEVE WOODS We were sorry to hear the news from AFC Portchester announcing the passing of former chairman and life president Steve Woods after a short illness. He played a major instrumental role in getting AFC Portchester to its current status during over 30 years of involvement with the club, proudly representing the club at Buckingham Palace in 2011 to receive the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service. On behalf of the League I extend our sincere condolences to family and friends at this sad time. THE LAST WORD In the middle of the week, we heard from the FA saying they would like to provide an update in relation to the recent survey sent to clubs at Steps 3 to 6 of the National League System. Submissions were made by 99.1% of clubs at Steps 3 and 4 (estimated as 223/225) and 95.8% of clubs at Steps 5 and 6 (estimated as 631/659). Ed- Hope that none of our clubs are in that 4.2% shortfall (28 clubs). The FA would like to thank the clubs for submitting their views and the time taken in providing responses at what we appreciate it an incredibly challenging time for everyone. The FA’s Alliance & Leagues Committees now have a large amount of data and information to consider before determining a proposed way forward. Ultimately any proposal made by the committees will be put to FA Council for consideration. FA Council will then make any final decision on a way forward. The Alliance and Leagues Committees recognise the desire for clubs to be updated whilst these issues are being carefully considered . Therefore, both Committees commit to providing updates to Leagues and Clubs as the process progresses; and remain mindful of the difficulties faced by clubs at present. Further information will follow in due course. On a different topic, the FA can also now provide further information concerning the Winter Survival Fund announced by Government, in relation to teams at our level within the National League System. Clubs will receive up to £10 million in grants to protect the immediate future of these clubs over the winter period. This was announced by the Government in the middle of the week as well. Grants will be distributed via the Football Stadium Improvement Fund (FSIF). Eligible clubs can apply for support to help with key expenditure such as lease or mortgage payments, debt or loan repayments, utility costs, insurance, essential pitch and stadium maintenance, non-playing staff that haven’t been furloughed or Covid-19 compliance measures. The application window is now open via the Football Foundations website and will close on 14 February. All our clubs will be notified directly by the Football Stadia Improvement Fund (FSIF) but our member clubs are encouraged to apply for the grant support available. For information, the DCMS statement on the fund may be found here: https://www.gov.uk/government/news/government-confirms-10-million-emergency- support-for-steps-3-6-of-the-national-league-system For details of the scheme- the Football Winter Survival Package, please visit the Football Foundation website at: https://footballfoundation.org.uk/grant/fwsp Clubs in our Premier Division stand to receive up to £10,500 whilst those in Division One could receive up to £7,500. It should be noted that successful clubs must use the funding by 31st March 2021. There are things that the grant CANNOT be used for, which are outlined upon application, but there are positives in that the Grant can be used for- ✓ Lease or mortgage payments Clubs are strongly advised to visit the ✓ Debt or loan repayments ✓ Utility costs (including phone and broadband) websites and apply accordingly. ✓ Insurance Good luck everyone!! ✓ Essential pitch and stadium maintenance ✓ Non-playing staff who haven’t been furloughed ✓ COVID-19 compliance measures ✓ Other financial commitments that have already been made (for example catering).
