PARISH INFORMATION CALLED TO BE COMMUNITY A guide to living a spirituality of communion How can we live our calling as Christians in the twenty-first century? Mutual Love Word of life for May 2022 I give you a new commandment, that you love one another. (Jn 13:34) These words were said during the Last Supper. Jesus was at table with his disciples and had just washed their feet. A few hours later he would be arrested, condemned to death and crucified. When time is short and the end is approaching, the most important things are said and a person’s "testament" is left. St John’s Gospel does not give an account of the institution of the Eucharist during the Last Supper. In its place is the washing of the feet. This sheds particular light on our understanding of the new com- mandment. Jesus first does something and then teaches, and for this reason his word has authority. The commandment to love one's neighbor was already present in the Old Testament: "Love your neighbor as yourself" (Lev. 19:18). Jesus highlights a new aspect of this, which is reciprocity. In fact, mutual love is what creates the Christian community and makes it stand out. FR. KARL REFLECTION THIRD SUNDAY OF EASTER In the Gospel of John today we hear Jesus ask Peter three times if he loved him. At first reading this seems strange: why would Jesus ask the same question three times? It doesn’t make sense. This is a time when a bit of scripture scholarship can be valuable for our understanding. When you study the original Greek there is much more to the story. There is also a contrast when you look at the Greek words for “love” used in John 21:15–17. When Jesus asked Peter, “Do you love me?” in John 21:15–16, He used the Greek word agape, which refers to unconditional love. Both times, Peter responded with “Yes, Lord; you know that I love you,” using the Greek word phileo, which refers more to a brotherly/friendship type of love. It seems that Jesus is trying to get Peter to understand that he must love Jesus unconditionally in or- der to be the leader God is calling him to be. The third time Jesus asks, “Do you love me?” in John 21:17, He uses the word phileo, and Peter again responds with “Lord, you know everything; you know that I love you,” again using phileo. The point in the different Greek words for “love” seems to be that Jesus was stretching Peter to move him from phileo love to agape love. On the occasion of Bishop Olson’s ordination as Bishop of Fort Worth he shared a profound and important insight. He pointed out that all of us are called to be disciples of Jesus and not merely admirers. In the Gospel today Peter is asked to enter more deeply into discipleship. Disciples love without limit. Disciples follow without hesitation. Let us pray for the grace to follow Christ and love unconditionally.

With You alone to guide us, make Yourself at home in our hearts; Teach us the way we must go and how we are to pursue it. We are weak and sinful; do not let us promote disorder. Do not let ignorance lead us down the wrong path nor partiality influ- ence our actions. Let us find in You our unity so that we may journey together to eternal life and not stray from the way of truth and what is right. All this we ask of You, who are at work in every place and time, in the communion of the Father and the Son, forever and ever. B 4C 05-1162
