Tom's Review The Kings of the Wyld: Book 1 by Nicholas Eames This book is a terrific start to a new fantasy series. Kings of the Wyld is also Nicholas Eames' first novel. Nineteen years ago, the five members of "Saga" (the name of their Band) were the most famous, admired, respected, and feared band of mercenaries in this world. Bards sang songs of them, the ladies loved them, and the children wanted to to be them. Their fame derived from the heroic battles fought in the Heartwyld. The Heartwyld is the prominent forest in this world, and it's filled with all kinds of wicked stuff: unbelievably ugly creatures that want to kill you, ghosts and spirits, and everyday evil people who want to take your money; even the plant life is out to get you in this place, and...there be dragons! Saga had battled them all and had come out the victor. But, as I've said, that was nineteen years ago... If this band were to get back together now, it would be like the Beatles getting together back in the late seventies. Except the Beatles never battled monsters or hunted down evil people. Well, one day Gabriel, who had been the front-man for Saga, shows up at Clay Cooper's front door begging a favor. Clay Cooper is our main protagonist, and the story is told from his perspective. As it turns out, Gabriel's daughter, Rose, is being held hostage in a fort surrounded by over one- hundred thousand creatures from the Heartwyld. Gabriel wants to get Saga back together again to free her. An impossible quest that no one in their right mind would undertake... Except for Saga. It would be just like the good ol' days! This book is full of humor, but it also has heart-stopping suspense and genuine emotion. Nicholas Eames has written characters so acutely and multi-dimensional that we care for each one, even the side characters that show up outside of the five-man Saga crew. Of course, there are the characters that you love to hate, like Saga's ex-promoter (every Band has to have a promoter), and this character is as real to us as the good guys; even though he is worm poop. So, overall I had more fun reading this book than I have had in a long time. I hope you will have as much fun as I did. Enjoy! -Tom 04
