Spring is in the air and all the animals are ready for your visit. Baby chicks and bunnies, kids and lambs, pigs and horses invite you to learn more about animals and experience life on the farm. The Flanders North Barn welcomes visitors with a Spring on the Farm reservation on select Fridays and Saturdays from DATES: Friday, May 7 & Saturday, May 8 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM. Capture and release creatures for close-up observations, enjoy daily challenges, scavenger hunts and games all designed to understand the complex dynamics of a forest ecosystem from the smallest insect to the oldest tree. AGES 10–13 FLANDERS SCIENCE ACADEMY Swamps, Springs, And Marshes: Trekking Through Wetlands SB FULL DAY, 2-WEEK ACADEMY Students experience the local environment as a system made of 4 different components; water, air, earth, and life. These components are connected and impact each other and are illustrated in the multiple wetland ecosystems on the Flanders campus. Students study four different wetlands, conducting scientific investigations on water quality, water flow, how wetlands act as pollution filters, and on energy flow through wetland food webs. They share the results of their investigations, developing their own creative displays for a final presentation. (This program runs from June 21–July 2.) This academy is a science- based package of environmental, ecological, and angling information. You will learn to cast, identify your catch, select the right bait, and tie a variety of strong knots. Students receive instruction, participate in fun demonstrations and hands-on activities and will be become knowledgeable and skilled anglers. Catfish, Perch, Large and Small Mouth Bass and Pickerel are all local freshwater fish that live in Flanders’ ponds and marsh. Educated anglers have a better understanding of our resources and the role we play. AGES 8–10 Animal Adventure SH Farm Animals 101 VS Spend a week, hands-on, learning how to manage farm animals. An Identification Workshop Flanders and the Pomperaug Valley Garden Club are excited to host Dr. Robert Naczi, Curator of North American Botany at New York Botanical Garden. He is a plant systematist whose research focuses on the flora of North America, plant conservation, the Sedge Family, and the Western Hemisphere Pitcher Plant Family. He leads the NYBG project to produce New Manual of Vascular Plants of Northeastern United States and Adjacent Canada. In his work on sedges, he combines field, herbarium, and lab work to discover and document new species, reveal relationships, and produce new identification tools. Many of the grass-like plants one may encounter in our natural areas are not actually grasses. Although similar, they are members of an entirely different family of plants. This workshop will focus on the largest genus within the sedge family (Cyperaceae), the genus Carex. Dr. Naczi will teach us about sedge diversity and how to identify this notoriously difficult group.
