H Celebrating 30 Years of Choice Affairs… H H 30 Years of friendship and laughter, new and unique experiences and coming together to stand with Planned Parenthood. Here’s how it all started. In 1989 Cheryl Rollings joined PPCCC as our new CEO. She came to us from Planned Parenthood Rocky Mountains, and one of the things she brought with her was Choice Affairs. This new idea was immediately handed-off to Board member and Development Committee member, Christine Saunders, to “run with it.” And, that she did! She and Jean Goodrich served as co-chairs for the inaugural series of events offered in the spring of 1990. There were 16 events, all underwritten, raising $18,735 in direct support for programs and services. Last year Choice Affairs offered 34 events and raised $76,000 in direct support! And, here’s the bottom line. Drum roll please… Through the generosity of hundreds of volunteers and event attendees over the last 30 Years, Choice Affairs has hosted 800 events and raised a net of $1.5 million for PPCCC. This truly is something to cheer about! We hope you will enjoy celebrating with us at one or more of the events this year. Many of the events were favorites from the past 30 Years. In addition to thanking our many hosts and underwriters for Choice Affairs 2019, we would like to express our appreciation to Betsy and Bob Manger and the Cheeryble Foundation for generously underwriting the production costs of this year’s booklet. Also, many thanks to our editor, Nancy Davidson, our creative writer, Betsy Manger, and to our graphic designer, Chris Flannery. We look forward to celebrating 30 Years of Choice Affairs and toasting to the next 30 Years with you! H Madhu Bajaj H Suzy Cawthon Choice Affairs Co-Chairs 2019 H Jane King

H A Message From Our CEO H H H Planned Parenthood California Central Coast is proud to serve Santa Barbara, Ventura and San Luis Obispo Counties. We are the leading resource for high-quality reproductive health care, sexuality education, and advocacy for reproductive health and rights along the Central Coast. Last year, our five health centers provided care to nearly 32,000 patients through more than 58,000 health center visits. During every patient visit, we provide lifesaving care, including breast and cervical cancer screenings, birth control, sexually transmitted infection testing and treatment, and safe and legal abortion. We are continuing to respond to the growing crisis of rising sexually transmitted infections and are providing more HIV and syphilis tests than ever in our history. There is no question that the last two years have brought extraordinary challenges. We faced natural disasters and continuing threats to reproductive health care from a hostile administration and Congress. We fought and lost the battle over a Supreme Court seat, which has alarmingly shifted the balance of the Supreme Court away from its previous support of reproductive rights. Nevertheless, as we always do, we continued to fight. Not only did we prevent a bill defunding Planned Parenthood from passing, we also secured additional funding from the State of California to protect the essential services we provide. We remain bolstered by the thousands of new activists, donors, and supporters who are standing with Planned Parenthood and advocating for reproductive health and rights alongside us. We are so grateful for the support of our incredible donors. Together, we are unstoppable. H Jenna Tosh, Ph.D. President & CEO Planned Parenthood California Central Coast

H H Sex, Pregnancy & The H Supreme Court ~ An Update Dr. David Bisno returns to engage us in another of his insightful examinations of the Supreme Court, helping us understand the nuances in balancing women’s rights and the need to govern a “well-ordered society.” Set in the lovely Alhecama Theatre in Santa Barbara, this presentation will focus on the Court’s dealing with women’s health care, Planned Parenthood, state laws and the U.S. Constitution. New justices, new problems, new arguments and traditional ways of thinking – all of this will make for a riveting presentation and spirited, enthusiastic discussion. We will serve a light breakfast and coffee during the break, allowing you time to meet and learn the thoughts of fellow attendees. Dr. David Bisno is a retired ophthalmologist with degrees from Harvard, Dartmouth and the Washington University School of Medicine, St. Louis. He studied law with Laurence Tribe at Harvard Law School and at the Law School of the College of William and Mary. An entertaining speaker, he has honed his abilities to make clear to all of us the subtle nuances and competing interests inherent in constitutional law. We will learn from David “those wise restraints that make men free.” Many thanks to Dr. Bisno for sharing his insights, and to your hosts Minda Kraines and Carol Spungen for making this all possible and to Holly Sherwin for lending a hand. Our appreciation also goes to Judy and Rob Egenolf for underwriting this event. H When Walls Talk…Shelton H H Brothers Architectural Tour Be ignited…be inspired…let your imagination take flight. Enjoy the creativity of architect Jeff Shelton and his brother, metal-art designer David Shelton, in Jeff’s design studio while they discuss their special method for creating imaginative and often whimsical projects in Santa Barbara. See how drawings, photographs and close interaction with owners are used to develop artistically inspired homes and office buildings. Jeff’s designs reflect his unique interpretation of Spanish influenced architecture while using David’s metal art to embellish and enhance the artistic ambience. Wear comfortable shoes for a walking tour through Santa Barbara with Jeff to view some of his most interesting creations. You’ll see some of Jeff’s magical use of tile and metal, including the astonishing Ablitt Tower, a home built for hosts Neil and Sue Ablitt. The 699-square-foot home is a treasure built to accommodate an extremely small lot. From here we will walk to some of Jeff’s other creations. Our final stop will be at El Zapato, where our gracious hostess Carla Lejade has opened her three-story home for this special tour. From the bottom up, this home is a treasure—adorned with thousands of glowing tiles, intricate wrought iron and material that mirrors the floral design in the floor and wall tiles. Relish the fabulous 360-degree view while you sip on wine provided by The Brander Vineyard and snack on delicious appetizers graciously prepared by your co-hosts Laura Newman and Karen McElwain. Grateful thanks to Carla Lejade for opening her home. H 3:00 – 5:30 pm H H 2 Thursday, April 4, 2019 Limited to 20 Architecture Appreciators $150.00 per person ($125.00 tax-deductible) H Location: Santa Barbara
H H H Follow A Trail To The Past…… In August 1909, two characters in the new novel An Unfortunate Incident at Castle Rock, Leontine Birabent and Patrick Denman make a day-long trek from lower State Street, through Goleta and up the central coast to the Arroyo Hondo Rancho. As they stop to marvel at significant sites along the way, Leontine shares information with her young friend Patrick, about interesting characters and events from the history of the area. Now, one hundred and ten years later, in the air-conditioned comfort of a modern motor coach, we will marvel at those very same sites. This time local historian Neal Graffy and co-author Annie J. Dahlgren will delight us with the information. Upon arrival at the Arroyo Hondo Preserve, we will enjoy a delicious lunch in the beautiful Hollister Meadow, followed by a tour of the historic adobe house built in 1842 and a walking tour of the meadow. The preserve, known as “The Jewel of the Gaviota Coast,” sits in a beautiful serene canyon filled with walking trails. As a keepsake for this special day, you will receive a signed copy of Neal and Annie’s new book, An Unfortunate Incident at Castle Rock, the second installment of their Santa Barbara History Mystery series. Many thanks to co-hosts Sue and John Burk for organizing and generously underwriting the cost of this event and to Neal Graffy and Annie Dahlgren for their continued support of Choice Affairs! H H H H Birding With Rob Lindsay H H Sing, sing, the dawn chorus is chattering and the birds are on the wing! What better way to start your day than a morning walk along the coast at the Carpinteria Salt Marsh, where you can observe local birds and other wildlife! Join Rob Lindsay for fresh pastries, juice and coffee when you arrive at the gated entrance to the UC Natural Reserve System’s Carpinteria Salt Marsh Reserve. Rob, who is past president for the Santa Barbara Audubon Society (1981-1984), has been leading field trips for them for nearly 35 years. Retired from Carpinteria High School and Santa Barbara Community College, but continuing to teach a bird watching course for the SBCC School of Extended Learning, Rob has been actively birding both locally and globally, including Hawaii, Jamaica, Nepal, Ireland, Peru, Costa Rica, Australia and New Zealand. With experience like that, how can you pass up this opportunity to join us and enjoy the morning as he shares his wealth of information and knowledge with all levels of birders? As a complement to Rob’s presentation, a representative from UCSB’s Natural Reserve System will join us to provide information about the marsh and the local wildlife. Due to a decent tide that day, we should see quite a few interesting birds hunting and living at the marsh. Bundle up, bring your binoculars or scopes, put on your walking shoes and get ready for a fascinating, two-hour date with nature! Special thanks to our co-hosts and underwriters Bobbie Offen and Laura Newman, who have volunteered to assist in making certain you will never forget this informative and enjoyable tour. H H Wings In The Spring!… H The Magic Of Oso Flaco Lake Oso Flaco Lake stands out as a unique ecosystem within the incredibly diverse Guadalupe-Nipomo Dunes Complex. The Dunes Complex is more than just sand. It is home to over 400 species of coastal plants, birds and other wildlife, over 50 of which are considered rare. H Auctioning American Art… H H H Sotheby Style H H Peter Rathbone, former director of Sotheby’s American Art Department, grew up in a family steeped in the art world. Even though he was far more interested in sports during his youth, after graduating from Boston University and the Sotheby’s training program in London, he ultimately followed family tradition, joining Sotheby’s American Art Department in New York in 1972 and serving as Director in 1976 until 2008. He remained as a Senior Advisor and Consultant to that department until 2015. Join him at the home of Leslie and Ashish Bhutani as he shares his fascinating personal Sotheby’s journey, focusing on the growth of the American art market, where he has been responsible for orchestrating the sale, at auction, of many of the most important works in the field of American paintings and sculpture – many selling for well over a million dollars. He will discuss the interesting, and in some instances historic, discovery of lost masterpieces and the lives which were affected by their sale. As the perfect conclusion to his compelling lecture, Leslie will serve a wonderful dinner complete with wine and more stories of art and auctions from Peter. Many thanks to the Bhutani family for opening their home and making this fascinating evening possible. H 4:00 – 7:00 pm H H 6 Tuesday, April 9, 2019 Limited to 20 Art Connoisseurs H $150.00 per person ($100.00 tax-deductible) Location: Montecito

H Custom Art And Antique H H H H Appraisal Road Show H In the beautiful setting of a lovely Montecito home, discover the true value of your own antique piece or artwork in this interactive presentation designed by certified appraiser Elizabeth Stewart, PhD. Last year, Elizabeth hosted a discussion based on her book No Thanks Mom, showing you the objects your kids do not want. This time, she’ll talk with you about what you should keep, and will explain what your antique or piece of art is worth and why. Bring a piece of art, your doll, a small piece of furniture, antique toys, books, silver, or an ethnic object of any age, and prepare to be amazed. While enjoying a wonderful lunch paired with delightful wines provided by Buttonwood Farm Winery & Vineyard, you’ll participate in the famous format known from the television show, Antiques Roadshow. Elizabeth will describe, date and value each object on the spot in a lively group setting. In the business of appraising for more than 30 years, Elizabeth has been answering clients’ questions on where to sell, what it’s worth, and how to build or downsize a collection. Dig out that one piece you’ve always wondered about and see if you have something of great value. We are so grateful to Susan and Bobby Shand for sharing their lovely home and garden and to Barbara Kaplan, Suzy Cawthon and Holly Sherwin for putting together this event. Elizabeth is as entertaining as she is wise, so come for lunch, laughter and the experience of a custom “treasure hunt.” H 12:00 – 2:30 pm H H 8 Thursday, April 18, 2019 Limited to 20 Ladies Who Lunch $100.00 per person ($70.00 tax-deductible) H Location: Montecito

Your hands-on educational experience will begin immediately when you meet Michelangelo, the resident alpaca and greeter, at the selfie station. Then into the red barn to meet the goats! With very clever animal husbandry, all the mamma goats will have delivered their kids just weeks before your visit. Enjoy a delicious farm- to-table lunch provided by Marston’s 101 in Atascadero. Our sincere appreciation goes to the Giving Tree Family Farm family, to Tom and Karen Spillane for underwriting this event, and to Alicia Morin, Tina Ballantyne and Jessica Baker- Ballantyne for organizing this delightful day in the country. H H Floral Finesse…The Art & H Science Of Flower Arranging The art of flower arranging eludes most of us. How are those roses and peonies and tulips transformed into one cohesive piece of beauty—sometimes romantic, sometimes whimsical, and other times, modern? Those in the know turn to Montecito florists Hogue & Co. to create that perfect arrangement. But, really, don’t you want to learn how to do it yourself? This is your chance. Kristi Meland, a partner at Hogue, will spend an afternoon teaching you skills she’s honed throughout the years. Kristi will demonstrate the techniques of selecting and combining flowers. She will show us different approaches to producing various arrangement styles, the importance of greenery, and her tips on what elevates an arrangement from pretty to spectacular. With buckets of flowers plus glass vases, you’ll have the afternoon to play and experiment with different styles and a variety of flowers until you have that one perfect arrangement. Your final masterpiece will certainly be worth more than the price of admission to this lovely afternoon. Light snacks will be offered while you’re learning and working, all in a spectacular setting. Ann and Jeff Frank are opening their very special art-filled home that has breathtaking views of the natural beauty of Santa Barbara. Floor-to-ceiling windows and rooms filled with their curated collection of art will inspire us to create our own works of beauty. H Ojai Raptor Center . . . H H H H H A Bird’s Eye View H H H H Would you like the chance to meet some wild feathered creatures up-close-and-personal? The adventure begins at the Ojai Raptor Center, where founder and executive director Kim Stroud will introduce you to the many hawks, eagles, owls, turkey vultures and other fascinating birds of prey that have been rescued and are being rehabilitated. The center’s staff is trained in the care and handling of raptors. They receive injured and orphaned birds from Ventura, Santa Barbara and Los Angeles counties, assess them for injuries and illnesses, rehabilitate them and ultimately release them back into the wild. It’s fascinating to hear the interesting and unique story about each bird and to see these birds up close. The center’s other focus is to provide educational programs to teach visitors more about the environment we share with these birds and how to prevent additional raptors from being sent to the center. After working up an appetite, head down the road a few minutes to Chateau Folie à Deux, the country French home of your gracious hostess, Berkeley Meigs. H I Can See The Light: H H H H Piedras Blancas Light Station H In 1875 the lights went on! The newly constructed lighthouse was illuminated by a first-order Fresnel lens intended to alert passing ships to the dangers of the offshore rocks surrounding Point Piedras Blancas. Although a hazard to ships, these same rocks, adjacent beaches and surrounding waters are home to a wide variety of seals, whales, dolphins and otters, as well as many bird species that roost there and call it home. Enjoy a special, two-hour docent-led tour of the historic Piedras Blancas Light Station and wildlife sanctuary along the beautiful north coastline of San Luis Obispo County. While on the half-mile stroll, you can appreciate the spectacular views of the coast, the wildlife and the gorgeous display of native plants as you learn about the history and restoration of the lighthouse. After the tour, sit down to a delicious picnic lunch provided by your gracious hosts, complemented by wine, with fellow history buffs and naturalists. Following the event you might choose to explore the charming village of Cambria on your own where you can see the lighthouse lens on display next to the Veteran’s Memorial building, visit the elephant seal beach a few miles south on Highway 1 or stop by one of the local wineries. Many thanks to Grace Crittenden and Beth Kendall for hosting and underwriting this delightful day. Note: Bring binoculars and a warm jacket! H Reining In H H H H The Wild Horse Population Don’t let “wild horses drag you away!” Join us at Return to Freedom to meet iconic mustangs up close and learn about their plight on the ranges of the American West. RTF, as the organization is known, is dedicated to advocating on behalf of wild horses and burros, as well as hands-on rescue. The staff at RTF’s Wild Horse Sanctuary will familiarize us with the problems and concerns intrinsic to wild horse conservation. These include managing wild populations that share publicly- owned land with privately-owned livestock. We will also learn about the historical value of various herds and have the opportunity to meet some local celebrities. The Kiger mustang stallion, Spirit, was the inspiration and model for a DreamWorks animated film and series. Keeping everyone in line will be Jasper, the ranch sheriff—a lovable burro who roams freely and keeps an ear out for any horseplay. We will begin with lunch in the education barn, followed by the program. Then we will hit the trail for a one-hour hike through pastureland to view horses interacting with their herd mates. Following the hike, we will enjoy wine and a Q & A with Neda DeMayo, founder and president of RTF. Before you leave there will be time for visiting with additional herds on the property. Giddy up and special thanks to Maryan Schall for underwriting and to Brittany Boylan and Sherry Madsen for hosting this galloping good time!
