DENI GOLF CLUB eNEWS 09 / 2020 A return to better weather has continued to attract great golfing numbers and the number of small meetings and functions in the clubhouse has increased. Renovations are nearly complete and you would all agree that the club is looking great. Lights have been installed in the silhouette and spotlights light up the gums, they look amazing at night. Financially we have come out of Covid fairly well, with government support and grants etc we will finish the year in a good position. Norm PICKERS CUP Sunday 11th October 9.30 for 10 am shotgun start COURSE MATTERS It has been quite a nice start to spring this year. We’ve had some good rain events as well as some sunnier days and the usual windy days have been few and far between. The greens continue to perform well and have only required one recent fungicide application. The warmer days have been enough to stimulate some bentgrass growth, so it would be expected that the greens speed will decrease. Pug marks are not as noticeable thanks to the greens now having some recovery with growth. The tees are still quite thin as couchgrass growth and recovery
requires a higher soil temperature than bentgrass. Some higher temperatures are forecast for later this week and this should spark them up, as well as a fertilizer application applied during the week. Fairways like tees are still thin and need some heat for growth. They have regained some colour but not any growth as yet. 250kgs of fertilizer per hectare is being applied this week. Our Poa Annua ( winter grass ) spray out was very successful you should notice this on the 3rd fairway. You can also see how Poa overtakes Couchgrass during the cooler months with the aid of constant shade. Our thick tree lines are very detrimental to good turf coverage. The recent USGA event at Winged Foot is a great example how a sparsely treed course can still give the effect of tight driving tees and fairways. I urge everyone to study the aerial shot of it, then compare it to our course. Our trees might give our course some personality but it comes at a price to turf quality. I know I sound like a broken record but carts continue to cause unnecessary damage to our course. The most disappointing thing is that its locals who are the worst. So many can’t or won’t adhere to the 10 metres from green rule, some of our regulars have been seen less than 1 metre away. Cart users PLEASE adhere to the rules! We have a large concrete area in front of the clubhouse that is especially for carts to park. Park your carts on this so that the lawned area can grow, the constant parking of carts on this area is preventing this. We have used the crushed concrete material that Rob Hood donated on the cart path on the 12th. It seems to pack down reasonably well and should be a good option until we can concrete all the tracks. Thank you to Rob and Jayne for the donation. The second green is progressing well, we are a week ahead of schedule so far, the area has been stripped of turf and that turf used to patch weaker areas around the course. Plus some has been laid on the 6th in preparation for the reconstruction of the 6th green as a temporary green. The topsoil has been removed and used to shape
the outlying areas. The base has been shaped to mirror image the surface. The drainage channels cut, pipe laid and covered with 100mm of 7mm stone. The greens sand has been applied and roughly leveled, we now have to add the organics and slow release fertilizers and integrate it into the top 150mm. We then level off the green again and work on compaction, whilst fitting the irrigation. As soon as the irrigation is fitted then the green and collar will be sown. In the coming weeks we will complete the broadleaf weed spraying, finish our fertilizer applications, spray our pre-emergent’s for summer grass and prepare for our major renovations in November. Captain's Reports Again another good month, with golfing numbers remaining high. The monthly medal was sponsored by Francis Kelly and Grant Solicitors and was won by Ron Turner with a net 68. Well done Moot! The Spring Classic sponsored by Harvey Norman Sunrice and Coles was also played, the men’s 36 hole winners were Scott Atley and Brodie McQuie. It is good to see the young players doing well. The ladies 36 hole winners were Ann Crossley and Sue Butcher. The men’s scratch winners were Peter Joice and Chris Thomson and the ladies scratch winners were Bridie Williams and Shannon Brown. Congratulations to all the winners. The Pickers Cup which is to be played on the 11th of October will be played at 10.00 am ( 9.30 for 10 shotgun start ) to allow play to be finished before the large number of visitors arrive for the Veteran’s Week of Golf registration afternoon. The format has changed for the VWOG, due to COVID issues, it will now be a 2 tee start so that a mass gathering of golfers will hopefully be avoided. The numbers for the VWOG are coming along well with over 140 players already registered. If you wish to play over the week please put your entries in at the Pro Shop. There are still a large number of divots that are not being repaired so please remember to fill your divots and any other divots that you see that need filling. Good Golfing, John Radeski. Another great month of golf with consistently good numbers of ladies playing on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Monthly Medal contested on 3rd September and sponsored by Radeski Earthmoving, was won by Brenda Leetham with net 68.
On Thursday 1st October we have our Medal of Medals playoff with our 6 Thursday winter medal winners and 6 Saturday summer medal winners contesting for Medal. We wish all contenders the best of luck. A very successful one day, closed Double Date event was held on 1st September. Jubilant winners of our Mary Bradshaw Bowl were Brenda Campbell, Trish Chandler, Pam Jarrett and Denise Hunter. Congratulations to these ladies. On Sunday 27th September the Ladies Volkswagen Scramble was played with nine teams competing. The winning team to move through to Regional finals next March consisted of Prue Lloyd, Shandra Simpson, Karen Druitt and Kym Sandford. It was a closely contested event with the winners winning on a count back from Jenny Choice, Bev Purtill, Anita Gorsuch and Vicki Robertson. A very enjoyable day was had by all. Continue to enjoy good golfing. Ann Bull Ladies Captain
Cheryl Fuller’s second shot on the 12th found an interesting lie. The comment “there are worse places to be than in a bunker” rings true. When Ball Is in Penalty Area A ball is in a penalty area when any part of the ball: Lies on or touches the ground or anything else (such as any natural or artificial object) inside the edge of the penalty area, or Is above the edge or any other part of the penalty area.
