Navi Mumbai International Airport is a proposed Greenfield international airport, to be built in the Kopar-Panvel area of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region in India. City and Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO) is the nodal agency for the project which will be built through public–private partnership (PPP) on a 'design, build, finance, operate and transfer' (DBFOT) basis. Mumbai Trans Harbour Link expected to be built by 2021 The Mumbai Trans Harbour Link, which will connect South Mumbai to Navi Mumbai, will start from Sewri in South Mumbai and join Navi Mumbai's Nhava Sheva area. The bridge will be built by Larsen & Toubro (L&T) and South Korea's Daewoo. The steel will be supplied by Japan's IHI Corporation. L&T will be spending Rs 8,637 crores to build two parts of the bridge — the Sewri side, which will cost about Rs 6,400 crore and the mainland side. The link will be similar to the existing Bandra-Worli Sea Link and will be built over the sea connecting the two ends. The first estimate of the project was pegged in 2005 at Rs 4,500 crore and over the years the total estimated cost has now increased to more than Rs 17,000 crore. According to Financial Express, the project, which was initially planned as a four-lane bridge, is now set to be eight lanes with two emergency exit lanes. The report points that this could likely be the cause of the increase in the cost. The extra lanes were proposed by Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) — which is taking care of the funding process. LOCATION ADVANTAGE
Make in India: CIDCO plans integrated township 'Khalapur Smart City' MUMBAI: The City and Industrial Development Corporation of Maharashtra (CIDCO) has decided to develop an integrated township 'Khalapur Smart City', entailing an investment of Rs 7,909 crore. The Corporation today signed an MoU with three civic bodies, including Khalapur Nagar Panchayat, Kalote Mokashi Gram Panchayat and Nadode Gram Panchayat, representing 11 villages, at a 'Make in India' Week event to develop the township project. A special purpose vehicle 'Khalapur SPV' has been formed for the project, which would be developed on the lines of CIDCO's Navi Mumbai Airport Influence Notified Area (NAINA), a statement issued here said. The 11 villages, namely Khalapur, Mahad, Shiravali, Nimbode, Vanve, Nadode, Nigdoli, Kalote Mokashi, Kalote Rayati, Vinegaon and Kandroli Turf Wankhal, have taken the initiative to voluntarily pool land totaling around 3,550 hectares for the project. CIDCO TO BUILD LARGEST CITY IN COUNTRY Maharashtra’s town planning agency, City and Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO), is planning to build perhaps the largest city in the country — even bigger than Mumbai and its suburbs put together. The new planned city called ‘NAINA’ or Navi Mumbai Airport Influence Notified Area is expected to be spread over 600 sq kms or 60,000 hectares, which is good 8,000 hectares more than the 52,000 hectares area occupied by Mumbai and its suburbs, and almost double the size of Navi Mumbai (320 sq km or 32,000 hectares), the first planned township of Mumbai. The size of the city can also be gauged from the fact that it is expected to house a population of 80 lakh in the next 30 years. Though no official estimates have been reached on the cost of developing this new city, the development cost will be roughly around R3,500 per sq m (about R2.1 lakh crore). This will include development of metro line and roads, etc, and will be spread around a radial distance of about 25 kms from the proposed airport in Navi Mumbai. LOCATION ADVANTAGE

MSRDC plans smart city corridor along Mumbai-Pune E-way The state road development corporation will soon build a corridor of smart cities along the Mumbai-Pune Expressway by tapping its existing land bank and acquiring more, with the chief minister having given an in-principle nod to appoint the corporation as a special planning agency for certain areas. The Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) has a land bank of about 500 hectare spread across 24 plots along the Mumbai-Pune Expressway. Of the 24 plots, three are in the Panvel taluka, eight in Khalapur, and 13 in the Maval taluka. A vast majority of these plots remain unused. A senior MSRDC official, who did not wish to be named, said, “We will concentrate on developing the stretch beyond Lonavala after the ghat section. A majority of the land prior to the ghat section falls in an eco-sensitive zone. We plan to acquire land to have a bank of about 1,000-1,500 hectares to develop about two to three smart cities. The plan is still in its nascent stages and a detailed project report will take time.” LOCATION ADVANTAGE
