Subject Help and Advice – Class of 2022 Maths Exam syllabus: OCR GCSE Maths (9-1) J560 The maths course consists of three papers at the end of year 11. Each paper is equally weighted, there are 2 calculator papers and one non‐calculator. Paper 1 (1hour 30 minutes): Calculator – Friday 20th May Paper 2 (1hour 30 minutes): Non-calculator – Tuesday 7th June Paper 3 (1hour 30 minutes): Calculator – Monday 13th June Full topic lists are provided for each paper. They detail the areas which will be assessed and contain Hegarty Maths clip numbers which will aid revision. The students will be entered for either Higher (grades 9-4) or Foundation (grades 5 – 1) depending on their ability. Revision materials and online resources Departmental website: Microsoft Teams – Students have been allocated to a Microsoft team which contains revision materials, video solutions and worksheets to aid and guide revision. Revision sites: Hegartymaths.com - Students have been set tasks which align to the topics which will be tested on each paper. It is advised they watch the video, make notes and then attempt the quiz which is self-marking. Comments can be left for the class teacher to respond to. Corbettmaths.com - Contains short videos on each topic along with exam questions and answers. Mathsgenie.com - Contains all released exam papers with model solutions. Also contains exam questions broken down by topic. Onmaths.com – online predicted papers and topic assessments. English There are 2 separate GCSE qualifications for this subject: EDUQAS GCSE English Language EDUQAS GCSE English Literature The best grade from either qualification will be used by sixth form colleges to calculate the student’s grade point average. 1|Page
EDUQAS GCSE English Language There are 3 components to this GCSE. Two written papers at the end of year 11 (Paper 1 worth 40% and Paper 2 worth 60%) and 1 internally assessed component on speaking and listening that will be reported as part of the qualification but will not form part of the overall grade. Speaking and Listening Students have prepared and delivered short speeches to a small group. This year we did not have to video record the speeches, but we did award grades using the Eduqas agreed proforma. The grades will appear separately on the examination certificate as Pass/Merit/Distinction in the spoken language component. Paper 1 Written examination. (1hour 45 minutes – 40%) Wednesday 18th May 2022 Reading Section A – 1 hour (40 marks) Read a prose extract (about 60-100 lines) from 20th century fiction and answer 5 structured questions. Writing Section B – 45 minutes (40 marks) Write a short story (approx. 600-800 words) from a choice of four titles. 16 out of 40 marks are awarded for Spelling, punctuation and grammar (SPAG) Paper 2 (2 hours – 60%) Friday 10th June 2022 Reading Section A – 1 hour (40 marks) Read two non-fiction texts (about 900-1200 words in total), one from the 19th century, the other from the 21st century. For this year only, the text types have been released. Students will be given a newspaper article from a quality newspaper and pages from a non-fiction book to respond to. They will be expected to answer 6 structured questions based on these texts. Writing Section B– 1 hour (40 marks) Write 2 texts (20 marks each) Students will be given 2 titles and asked to write for a range of audiences and purposes, adapting style to form and to real-life contexts. For this year only, the exam board have released the text styles they will be expected to write a formal letter and a magazine article. 16 out of 40 marks are given for SPAG. 2|P age
EDUQAS GCSE English Literature There have been significant changes to the way in which this GCSE will be assessed. These are summarised here: Component 1 examinations - Wednesday 25th May 2022 Exam A – Shakespeare – 1 hour Two questions. Question 1 will be based on an extract from the play. (15 marks) Question 2 will be based on the play as a whole. (20 marks and 5 marks for SPAG) Exam B – An Inspector Calls – 1 hour One essay type question based on an extract from the text and the play as a whole. (35 marks and 5 marks for SPAG) Component 2 examination – Wednesday 18th June 2022 Exam 2A – A Christmas Carol - 1 hour One essay question based on the extract and the text as a whole. (40 marks) Exam 2B – Unseen poetry from the 20th and 21st century – 1 hour Two questions based on unseen poems; one of which involves comparison. Additional information: Students are working on individual projects based on titles of their own choice from their final portfolio project as well as improving and completing their projects from Year 9 and 10 on Cells and Colour. They need to working on their artwork at home each week; making drawings of their chosen artists’ work, taking photographs and making drawings relevant to the artists’ work and their chosen title and designing their own ideas in response to the title and their artists’ work. All portfolio work must be complete, mounted up and annotated, by Tuesday 17th May and submitted on this day for assessment.
