Stronger Together. A Virtual Auction & Streaming Event Saturday | May 30, 2020 7:30 - 9:00 PM Facebook Live
Welcome from Joe Mooney, Irish Open Event Chair I’m honored, once again, to be your Irish Open event chair. This year, we’ve gone virtual, and an event of this new magnitude is not without its challenges. As a board member and sponsor, I appreciate the continued good work St. Patrick Center is doing during this difficult time. Thank you for being with us tonight and for your commitment to St. Patrick Center. Tonight we will be coming to you live from St. Patrick Center, where the dedicated staff comes together day after day to solve homelessness and help people change their lives. I invite you to sit back, relax, grab your favorite beverage and snack, and join us from your own home. Change has been the theme during this pandemic, and your gift to St. Patrick Center changes lives. Thousands of St. Louisans are facing financial challenges and we know St. Patrick Center will be at the forefront for helping St. Louis area citizens bounce back. I want to personally thank all Irish Open sponsors as well as the event committee. It was a challenge to change the event with a few weeks’ notice, but they came together to support St. Patrick Center’s mission. Thank you for being with us—from the comfort of your homes. Please be as generous as your budget allows during our auctions and Bid to End Homelessness. Together, we can make a difference! We remember Edith Cunnane The St. Patrick Center family remembers our founder, Edith Cunnane, who passed away January 3, 2020 at the age of 76. On a bitterly cold day in the early 1980s, Edith asked a group of people why they were outside. One man responded, “Lady, where do you think I would be welcome today?” This was the inspiration that surged Edith forward with a new mission that gave a voice and face to people experiencing homelessness. In partnership with the Archdiocese of St. Louis, Catholic Charities of St. Louis and Monsignor Robert Slattery, Edith founded St. Patrick Center in 1983 inside the former St. Patrick School at 6th and Biddle Streets. For the next ten years, she served as the agency’s first Executive Director, working tirelessly to increase services to people who were the most vulnerable. Under Edith’s direction, St. Patrick Center opened the Shamrock Club, the nation’s first day treatment program for people experiencing behavioral health issues. She also launched the Casserole Program and McMurphy’s Grill, and expanded programming to include housing assistance, employment services and life skills training. In all, Edith dedicated 37 years to St. Patrick Center. In her words from St. Patrick Center’s 25th anniversary celebration: “I feel so privileged to be associated with St. Patrick Center and feel I was really just an instrument of what God wanted done in this community.” 6 St. Patrick Center Irish Open
