The First Word My blood is red… and gold! Day One of a new season... Heaven! Today we welcome Upper Hutt City to the hallowed turf of Hutt Park. It’s been a tremendously busy off season for the club and we are very excited about the positive progress we have made since the end of the 2010 sea- son. The club has already run a series of pre-season social league friendlies. The club has successfully run the 3rd Annual Women’s pre-season competition Stop Out has appointed Scott Easthope in the new role of Junior Coaching Director as we continue to improve on our “Capital Football 2010 Junior Club of the Year” award. Scott has already added some positive impact and professionalism to how our junior club is running! Stop Out is also one of the nine clubs within the Capital Football region to be selected as a pilot club to trial New Zealand Football’s new “Whole of Football” initiative. And Bess is back as Director of Football as we continue to strive for succeed at Senior level. Captain Steve Gulley leads the core of last years squad with some exciting additions to the team. With a solid pre-season behind us our senior sides are well prepared for 2011. Peter Maurer’s 3rd team and the Werewolves have aspi- rations for promotion and Women’s Director of Football Brendan Marsh and his charges aim to emulate last years extraordinary success. The 1st team will play in Capital Premier for the first time in the clubs history and with 3 senior teams wearing Red and Gold in 2011 it will be another great year for the Women at Stop Out. This Sun- day sees the season kick off for all Women’s leagues. So for all players and specta- tors enjoy the football. Good luck to both sides and please enjoy our Stop Out hospitality. 3 Chris Canton, President
Welcome from Besim... Amazingly the 2011 Football Season has arrived. It certainly has crept up on us all with all the Football we are able to watch both in our own NZFC, A-League and the massive amounts we all get on TV. Pre-season has come and gone and this Luke Wilson year has been one of excitement having entered two teams in the Hilton Petone Cup. These matches have been invaluable for our teams. The Capital 2 team has been able to blood some fantastic young tal- ent with a handful of youth players mak- ing the step up to Senior Football. Our Capital Premier team was able to use the full squad in all matches and Steve Gulley give game time to our new recruits and build combinations in playing the “Stop Out way”. The team had a very good tournament going through unbeaten only to be elim- inated on penalties at the Quarter Finals stage. As with every season players come and go in the off season. I want to introduce some of the new faces in our squad. Aleem Sheik Blair Easthope (Scottys older brother), Wellington based Aleem Sheik and Vathana Young have joined us this year and will be superb additions to an al- ready talented squad. Welcome to Stop Out guys. CASE Services Community & Supported Employment Services 4 6 Whakatiki Street, Upper Hutt. 0800 022 457 Supporting People with Disabilities
I mentioned the A-League earlier and this season I was engrossed in it. The amount of free flowing Football was a breath of fresh air and the Brisbane Roar and Central Coast Mariners have to be commended Vinny Godwin for sticking to their footballing styles and philosophies. It was no surprise that these teams made and played out a wonderful Grand Final. Maybe one day the Phoenix can change their footballing philosophy and I’m sure success Vathana Young will come to them. Hopefully this season we too can bring you the fans and club members more free flowing football. We certainly won’t move away from our philosophy. Today our season begins with a real test against defending champions Upper Hutt City. Jamie Mason I welcome Pedro Garcias and his team to Hutt Park and hope that everybody enjoys a fantastic match. See you at the after match. Besim 5 021 781 691

Stop Out Women in 2011 Building on the success of last winters fabulous season the Mel “O” club will enter 3 teams in local senior football this year. Chris and Brendan are rapt to have Russell back on board as squad manager and welcome Dean Bowden & Jenny Hibbert, who are stepping into roles with the second and third teams. Our first team will play Premier League football and are raring to go after a bright showing at the recent Yellow Fe- ver Stop Out Tournament. There team tackled Central League opposition & never looked out of place as our players lifted their game to ever higher levels. The second team tackle Division 2 and the third team start in Division 4. For both of these teams the challenge is take advantage of the league system and make a push for promotion by mid season. We continue to run one en- larged squad, trusting our methods and training systems to improve the standards of all our players and with the competition evident for team spots at the moment we see no need to change. The squad has grown to over 40 players, with a mix of young and not quite so young faces joining us this season to complement the women returning from last year when three promotions, two league titles and a division cup were won. This year the squad will again manage the club kitchen through the winter. And expect also to see our senior players each week at the junior’s PDP on a Saturday as our young women assist the kids IN taking their first steps playing the beautiful game. New Junior Strip There’s nothing too big for the power’s that be at Stop Out… The challenge in the off-season was to design a new strip that was unique to Stop Out… Be true to our traditional colours of red, gold and black… And have it designed, manufac- tured and ready for the 2011 season… JPL 13 coach Alex McDonald’s lads show off the club’s new junior strip. Oh and kit out the whole junior club! … simple really. Well the results are amazing and we’re not only the best looking club on show, but as Capital Foot- ball’s 2010 Junior club of the Year we can play a bit as well! For our JPL and Promo teams the season Stop Out branding kicked off on the back of today and the every shirt. rest of the Priceless! Juniors start next weekend. Get along and watch some of our juniors as there’s some very special talented players within the club and our next generation of senior players. Good technique, Miss Jansen! 11

Yellow Fever Stop Out Women’s Tournament Our annual pre-season Women’s tournament saw the Yellow Fever come on board as sponsors in 2011. Two days of magnificent weather and high quality football saw Lower Hutt come out on top in Div 1 and Wellington United in Div 2. A fantastic dress rehearsal for the season and only a couple of broken bones! 13 Great supporters of Stop Out with a lot of Italian flair!
The Last Word! Stop Out life-long fan Michael Barton shares his views on the football world! THE SEASON STARTS Checking my email the other day there was one sitting there from Chris Canton. When I opened it and read that the season was due to kickoff in a matter of days I was at a loss on two counts. Firstly, where did the close season go? How did I miss that? That is seven months just washed away like tears in rain. Secondly, what great news! Football is back again. Mind you these day it never really goes away does it? That said, this is different, this is our local team. We touched on this last season, the notion of the local team and what it means to have them to support. They matter. Geoffrey Green wrote for The Times, in London, many years ago. One of his more memorable quotes is They have won because their football is a dance full of irrational surprises and Dionysiac variations. This is our third year in the Central Premier League and I would like think that our season will hold all of that which Green encapsulated in that one sentence. However, there are wiser and far less romantic football heads around. According our Stop Out’s very own, very matter of fact, football sage Alastair Robb this is our year. That said he has a pro- viso. We have to play beautiful football...except when the pitches are covered in mud and in that case you can just biff it over the top and get every person and his dog to chase the thing.. The new end of season format also holds appeal. None of this second chance stuff for the team that comes last in the Central League it is just a two legged cup final that will decide things. If we are talking about that already I guess that means there is sense of optimism in the air. Why not! We played some decent stuff last year and I for one cannot see any reason why we cannot go on from there. If you are wondering what is meant by decent stuff? Look at the football played in the match against Island Bay United. That was decent stuff! At this point I want to borrow three sentences from a report by the UK’s Social Issues Research Centre, 2008, entitled Football Passions. At this season’s start let’s remember football is an im- portant means for people to form and maintain strong friendships that might otherwise not ex- ist. Then to be a 'true' fan requires the 'living' experience of football. It is not about being a mere spectator – it is about being a participant. Match attendance is a given, of course, but there is also a duty to engage emotionally in the life of the team in order to impact positively on a team's perfor- mance. So shout, chew your nails, and give Besam more advice than he really needs (spare the referees). The 2011 season starts here. The Football Passions report is to be found at www.sirc.org/football/football_passions.pdf 14 Michael Barton
