STAFF BULLETIN – AUGUST 9, 2019 SUMMER PICNIC – THURSDAY AUGUST 15- 5:00 PM Mystic Seaport Staff and their guests are invited to the annual Summer Picnic at the Boat Shed. Sign-up sheets have been distributed to individual departments, please sign up and indicate the number of guests in your party by Friday August 9th. Staff and one guest are invited along with children under 10 for free. Additional guests are $20.00. The annual dessert contest is a great opportunity to show off your baking skills! Desserts will be judged on taste, presentation and creativity. If baking is not your thing and you would like to be a judge for this event please email Kristen or Deb to let us know. ARTS ON THE QUAD Tomorrow! Figureheads and Flock Theatre $10 suggested donation On Saturday, August 10, the Museum will hold its third Arts on the Quad performance of the summer! Pack your blanket or lawn chairs and find your perfect spot for viewing. You’re invited to bring your own picnic and non- alcoholic beverages. A cash bar and concession snacks will be available. The featured exhibit for the evening will be Figureheads in the Wendell Building, which will be free and open to the public between 5 p.m. and 8 p.m. Starting at 5:30 there will be a talk about the exhibit by Curator of Collections Fred Calabretta. Following Fred’s talk will be a performance of Shakespeare’s The Comedy of Errors by Flock Theatre, a company based out of New London that is dedicated to creating original, collaborative, and educational theatre. NEW EXHIBIT OPENING MARY MATTINGLY’S OPEN OCEAN OPENING DAY ACTIVITIES - SATURDAY, AUGUST 10 Join us for a full day of programming on Saturday as we celebrate the opening of the Museum’s newest exhibition, Mary Mattingly’s Open Ocean. Mattingly is a leading contemporary artist from Brooklyn with an interest in the sea as a platform for artmaking. All activities are free to staff, volunteers, and members, and included with Museum admission for non-members. There will be a special 8 a.m. Members Event – Mattingly will give an introduction at the R.J. Schaefer Building, then starting at 9:30 a.m., all visitors are welcome to join the following activities. Be sure to register for the member preview for faster check in by calling Membership at 860-572-5339. • 8 a.m. — Special Member Preview with Gallery Talk by Mary Mattingly (complimentary coffee and pastries served on the South Deck) • 9:30 a.m.-12 p.m.— Meet Mary Mattingly in the exhibition • 10 a.m. and 12 p.m. — Enjoy sea chanteys on the McGraw Quad • 10 a.m., 11:30 a.m., 1:30 p.m., and 3 p.m. — Sign up in Thompson for behind-the-scenes vault tours with Luce Project Assistant Curators Mirelle Luecke and Katherine Hijar, who will offer a peek into their upcoming exhibitions, Sea as Studio and The Sea as Muse • 10:30 a.m. – 12 p.m.: Paper boat building demo on the Thompson Deck by art collective, Mare Liberum • 11 a.m. — Talk in the Masin Room: Matthew Friday of creative design consultancy SPURSE will will discuss their OCEA(n) project, a multi-year collaboration with the Northwest Atlantic Marine Alliance. This project, designed to transform the roles of fishermen into natural historians and consumers into citizens, served as to tool to unite communities around the mutual pleasure and curiosity we find in our oceans. • 1-4 p.m. — See Mattingly create a “bundle” that will become a part of the exhibition. Visitors are welcome to collaborate with Mary on her bundle. She will accept non-perishable donations under 20 inches and lighter than 50 pounds. 1:30 p.m. — Talk in the Masin Room: Dylan Gauthier and Sunita Prasad, members of the Brooklyn, NY- based artist collective Mare Liberum will discuss their collaborative projects on urban waterways combining craft, ecology, and embodied environmental research. • 2:30-4 p.m. — Paper boat building demo by Mare Liberum continues -Arlene Marcionette, Public Programs and Libby Daly, Membership Programs EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES Full and Part-time Security (Part-time) Carpenter
