Our Vision As a learning organisation, St Simon Peter recognises the changing needs of students; our moral imperative is to respond to the uncapped potential of 21st century learners. Our motivation is to ignite learning in others, to kindle curiosity and creativity and to light up the potential of the human mind. In line with the school’s Strategic Plan, St Simon Peter Catholic Primary School will provide challenges and opportunities for the growth of the whole person. We aim to foster critical thinking, collaboration, culture, connectivity, communication and creativity using new pedagogies. The core components of these new pedagogies are developing new learning partnerships, engaging in deep learning tasks through the use of digital tools and resources. Our Rationale We are implementing a 1:1 device program to: ● Implement the mandated Western Australian Technologies Curriculum ● Increase student engagement - accelerator for Deep Learning ● Complement project-based learning in the classroom ● Provide opportunities for collaboration and critical thinking ● Ensure that NAPLAN online is a measure of students’ literacy and not their computer literacy competencies1 ● Broaden learning beyond the classroom to complement passion projects ● Prepare students to be successful 21st century learners ● Equip students with the knowledge and skills needed for success in a rapidly evolving and uncertain world. Program Guidelines With each student having access and control of their device, excellent opportunities and learning experiences will be available to them. However, with any new opportunity comes significant responsibility. The school will clearly articulate to each student their responsibilities in relation to: ● Respecting each individual’s privacy and dignity (i.e. cyber safety issues) ● Using the device for appropriate purposes ● Protecting and caring for their device We recognise the need for students to be safe and responsible users of digital technologies. Each child and their Parents will be asked to read, understand, sign and adhere to the Device Program User Agreement Policy for Years 4-6. 1 https://www.nap.edu.au/online-assessment/naplan-online 3
Family Sharing & Screen Time We acknowledge that students having access to their own device increases the risk of distraction from social media, communication apps and games. We encourage the use of the Screen Time app at home. With Screen Time, you can access real-time reports about how much time your child spends on their iPad. With Content & Privacy Restrictions in Screen Time, you can block or limit specific apps and features on your child's device and restrict the settings on their iPad for explicit content, purchases and downloads, and privacy. • Each iPad needs to have an Apple ID signed in so that all photos, videos, apps and data within certain apps are backed up to iCloud. • The way adults would create an Apple ID for any Apple product purchased is not the recommended way to make an ID for children under the age of 13. The child’s personal information will become public and it will be harder to monitor and control what they do on their iPad at home. • Therefore, if you have an Apple iPhone, we highly recommend you setup a Family Sharing iCloud account for your child, where you can create an Apple ID that is private and entirely managed by you (including app downloads and purchasing made through the app store). The Apple ID you make through Family Sharing is what you use to sign into iCloud on your child's iPad. • If you don’t have an Apple iPhone or another Apple product, we recommend the Apple ID you create has your personal information in it, not your child’s (ie: Full Name & DOB are yours not your child’s). If you make an account this way, we also don’t recommend you attach a credit card to it. Device Information As part of St Simon Peter Catholic Primary School’s 1:1 Device Program, families are required to supply their children with the following items: 1. An iPad that is no older than the 6th generation and has a minimum storage capacity of 128GB. Why? o With Apple updating their iPads every 12 months, older generation iPads cannot handle the frequent iOS and app updates required for the device to run efficiently o Our experience in the program so far is students are running out of storage space before they start Year 5 if the iPad has less than 128GB of storage o Our program runs from Year 4 to 6. We want to make sure your child has a device that will last them 3 years of schooling 2. A screen protector for the iPad 3. A protective cover that provides protection on the front and back of the iPad 4. A zip up carry case to provide added padding and protection for the iPad and Pencil when travelling to and from school or lessons 5. Apple Pencil or equivalent 6. Protecsure Insurance or Home and Contents Equivalent o If purchasing the iPad and/or other items through our purchasing portal, we recommend you buy the 3-year Protecsure Insurance package as well. This insurance covers the iPad for accidental damage, loss or theft around the world o If choosing to buy or bring your own iPad and accessories, you will need to ensure your home contents insurance or equivalent covers your child’s iPad at school. St Simon Peter takes no responsibility for damage, loss or theft in this instance 7. The Management and Licensing Fee o A once-off fee is required by all families in order to provide your child’s iPad with management and apps required in Years 4 to 6 o The fee consists of a 3-year JAMF license and a bundle cost for required paid applications School supplied Accessories: 8. Wired Keyboards. We understand the importance of teaching keyboard and typing skills, however with the introduction of the new 10.2” iPad we are unable to source an appropriate, rugged keyboard case suitable for students. Keyboard and typing skills will still be taught in class using wired keyboards. 5

Option 2: Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) We fully support parents supplying their own required items for our 1:1 program. Frequently Asked Questions How often will the device be used? The nature of the 1:1 environment is that students will have their device with them and available for use throughout the school day. Keeping inline with current research, the device will not be used for approximately more than 2 hours a day2. Like other learning tools, the use of the device will depend on the particular learning activity and this is at the discretion of the teacher. Activities will blend with others such as writing, reading, discussion, debate and testing, and students will find that their use of device will vary from day to day. Other subjects will still receive the appropriate allocation of time and resources. How will the Apple Pencil be kept safe and secure? The STM Dux Plus Duo case will have a slot for the pencil to sit in when not in use. We require that a ‘tamper proof’ name label be stuck to the end of the pencil to ensure the owner of the pencil is easily identified. Where does handwriting fit in? Teachers will use both digital technologies (supported by the Apple Pencil3) and traditional methods of teaching handwriting. The Western Australian Curriculum requires students to develop a personal handwriting style that is legible, fluent and automatic4. Keyboards are required to further support typing and keyboard skills. Will the device have Internet access from home? The school will provide Internet access when at school with appropriate CEWA filtering policies. Parents are responsible for providing Internet access at home if they wish. The school encourages that any Internet use is permitted in an open environment and monitored at all times. What if my family already has the required device? Purchase option 2 allows for families who already have the required device to utilise it in our 1:1 Program, providing it meet the requirements stipulated in the option 2 description. Who will pay for and install the apps? The cost of the required apps is embedded in the cost of each purchase option for the device program. These apps will be distributed via JAMF. This model allows easy distribution by the classroom teacher and access to Apple Volume Education Pricing for Apps. At the completion of enrolment at SSP, all app licenses provided by the school will be revoked and removed from the device. 2 https://austparents.edu.au/parentech_resources/screentime 3 https://www.apple.com/au/apple-pencil/ 4 https://k10outline.scsa.wa.edu.au/home/p-10-curriculum/curriculum-browser/english-v8 8
Can my child install their own apps? Parents are permitted to join an Apple ID to their device and install age-appropriate apps for personal use. Apple’s terms and conditions state only children aged 13+ are able to create personal Apple IDs. We highly recommend the use of family sharing and screen time to monitor your child’s device. Students are expected to adhere to the Acceptable Use policy, stipulating students are not permitted to delete school provided apps or use personally installed apps on school grounds. Will there be a reduction in booklist costs? 1:1 year level booklists will be reduced to less than $100. Will students be able to use their iPad during recess and lunch? At this point in time, the iPad will be kept secured in the student’s classroom at recess and lunch. The devices are to remain in the students’ school bags with the student before and after school. What if my child forgets to bring their iPad to school? In this case the student may be required to complete tasks without it and catch up on work in their own time. What headphones will my child need? Any type of headphone is suitable. Where will students charge their devices? It is the student’s responsibility to ensure that their device battery is fully charged at home each night. Battery chargers are to be kept at home. I chose purchase option 2, when will I need to supply the device to join SSP’s JAMF? Parents will have the opportunity to supply the device to SSP in Week 9 of Term 4. The device will be enrolled into JAMF and returned before the end of the week. I am concerned about health issues. Prolonged time in any position or activity may be of concern. This may include sitting and writing, reading, sporting activities and screen time. Student activities are managed in the planning and delivery of curriculum. In accordance with current research, our teachers embed regular breaks, active learning when using technology and students are encouraged to get up and move around the classroom5. We also use furniture that maintains good posture. The 1:1 Project Team continues to work closely with our onsite Health Services to ensure the health needs of our students are addressed. 5 http://raisingchildren.net.au/articles/screen_time.html 9
