PASTOR'S WEEKLY MESSAGE 4th Sunday in Ordinary Time, B, January 31, 2021 Teaching with Authority St. Mark was a skilled narrator who used few words to describe great events. In the first chapter of the gospel he wrote, St. Mark introduced us to the minis- try of Jesus with his baptism, the proclamation of repentance and the kingdom of God, the call of the disciples, and his first teaching and miracle. What Jesus taught the people made a deep impression on them. While the Scribes relied on the authority of others to explain and teach the Law and scriptures, Jesus taught on his own authority and by the power from above. He was different and re- freshingly compelling with his message. For the people, it was not so much what was said as to who said it and the action behind the word. The authority of Jesus flowed from his transparent life. He did not just tell the people to love but he practiced it himself. Je- sus never turned down anyone who came to him for healing or other needs. He did not just preach about forgiveness, he practiced it himself as he forgave his persecutors on the cross. His actions gave authority to his teachings. That was why the demon shouted in the man that was possessed today. The presence of Jesus was a threat to the demon for where the spirit of God is, the evil spirit becomes uncomfortable. When the light comes, darkness disappears. In the first reading, Moses told the people that God will raise another prophet for them who will lead them with authority as he did. This prophet or leader will give them the messages of God and not his own message. Joshua was that great leader of Israel after Moses, but Jesus is the perfect leader of God’s people who gathers people of all races together to the kingdom. He did not only preach about the kingdom but lived out the kingdom values in his own life – the kingdom of justice, peace, and love. How much trust do we put on those in authority today? Are our leaders carrying out the will of God themselves? Or are they telling us something and doing other things? How about in our homes? Parents teach their children to be kind and loving but when children observe that mom and dad are nasty to each other, they might imbibe nastiness rather than kindness. When going to church to worship God is a burden for parents, how are they going to tell their children that it is good to serve the Lord? Jesus was not like the scribes and Pharisees. He spoke with authority. He was not hypocritical. He did not just speak the truth he was Truth Incarnate. Jesus gave orders to unclean spirits, and they obeyed him. It was not the words that kicked the devil out, it was the person who spoke those words. He did not call us just to do some of the things he did, he called us to be his presence for others. We are called to destroy evil in our world. We cannot do this unless we are determined to be Christ-like. Today we pray that we might be invested in the authority of Christ, an authority that flows not just from what we say, but from who we are as followers of Christ. National Catholic Schools Week: This national event highlights the values and blessings of our Cath- olic schools. It begins today and will end on February 6th. Our students who are able, will attend the 11:00AM Mass in their school uniform. Two of them will be our Lectors for the Mass. Due to the pandemic, the Open House will be virtual this year so check out the flyers in the narthex and visit the school’s website www.smmcs.org for more information. Join us as we celebrate and focus on the value that Catholic education provides to our children and its impact on our church, community, and our nation. We thank parishioners who support our Catholic School for believing in the educa- tion of the young. Have a very blessed week! Fr. Felix I. Osasona, MSP Pastor Page 3 | January 31, 2021

The Presentation of the Lord February 2, 2021 “We too are called to welcome Jesus who comes to meet us. To encounter him: the God of life is to be encountered every day of our lives; not now and then, but every day. To follow Jesus is not a decision taken once and for all, it is a daily choice.” —Pope Francis, Feast of the Presentation of the Lord, 2019. The Presentation of Jesus in the temple shows him to be the firstborn Son who be- longs to the Lord. With Simeon and Anna, all Israel awaits its encounter with the Savior—the name given to this event in the Byzantine tradition. Jesus is recognized as the long-expected Messiah, the “light of the nations” and the “glory of Israel,” but also “a sign that is spoken against.” The sword of sorrow predicted for Mary announces Christ’s perfect and unique oblation on the cross that will impart the salvation of God has “prepared in the presence of all peoples” (CCC, no. 529). Fr. Felix I.
