March 2020 Vol. XXVII, No. 7 from the Pastor. . . Adam Beeken is our new Director of Music Ministries. Here is a message from him: Father Dan I am so thankful for the warm welcome my family and I have received in the past few weeks. It is very good to be home with you and renewing and creating friendships. In worshipping with you all, I am touched and excited by the beautiful tapestry of faith on display. My hope is that we will all enter more deeply into the mysteries of our faith in our experiences at Mass. I believe a key part of this encounter and one of the most beautiful aspects of the Mass is how we offer ourselves (as we are) each time: “May the Lord accept the sacrifice at your hands, for the praise and glory of his name, for our good, and the good of all his holy Church.” We say this phrase at each Mass, but we may not realize its full implications. That sacrifice is not only the bread, wine, and monetary offering, but it is also our entire person (body, mind, and spirit). What does this have to do with music? Well, we are to offer our voice (no matter the quality) during the Mass in praise, petition, thanksgiving, sorrow, joy, and in unity. So I encourage all of us to fully, loudly, and sincerely offer ourselves and our voices in song at each Mass—as the psalmist says “Make a joyful noise unto the LORD, all ye lands. Serve the LORD with gladness: come before his presence with singing (Psalm 100).” Our full and active participation is a beautiful gift, and I believe very pleasing to our Lord. The assembly at Mass is the largest and most important member of our music ministry, and I am honored to work with you all. As for those of you with a particular interest in music: know there is a place for you in our music ministry. All singers, all ages, all instruments, all languages, and all abilities have a place to share for the praise and glory of God’s name. Consider joining our Easter Choir which will provide music for the liturgies of Holy Week. We meet on Sunday evenings from 6:45-8pm in the music room. Opportunities for children and youth will be announced soon, and I would love to see awide variety of instruments used at each of our Masses. Do not hesitate to contact me with any questions. From the Principal . . . This last month of February has really been a “love”ly month for us at Mary Queen School. Our PreK and Kindergarten students got to show how much they loved their Grandparents in our annual Grandparents Day celebration. We danced and sang, laughed, it was a great morning and we got to spend it with our favorite people. The next day we showed our love with our Dads at our Father Daughter Dance. The evening started in the church with Mass and then we moved to the gym where we tried to teach our Dads a dance move or two and although our Dads won the dance off, a good time was had by all. School News Lots of things to be proud of and say congratulations about. To our second graders who received the Sacrament of Reconciliation this month. To our basketball players who completed another successful season of basketball PreK-B and to our students who were recognized in the second trimester awards ceremony. Shew, it was a busy month. PreK-C (continued) PreK-E PK-E has been enjoying Read Across America by celebrating Dr. Seuss. We set up a birthday party in our dramatic play center with party supplies, balloons, and cake. We have also been doing a lot of fun activities based off his book. We have been stacking cup towers, working on rhyming, building and drawing cat in the hat, and journaling about what we would do with the cat in the hat. We dressed up each day based on his books: we wore stripes, hats, wacky socks, the color green, and picked our favorite color. We also read as many books as Mrs. Barr could find. PreK-D Studying Birds is a wonderful theme to implement in the preschool classroom. With spring around the corner we enjoyed learning all about our backyard friends. Childhood is the time to encourage and nurture early interests in nature and understanding of the importance of God's living things. While listening to bird sounds the children enjoyed painting and decorating their bird box. Mrs O'Dwyer & Mrs. Lugo

Karen Metheny, first grade teacher In February, 4th graders learned all about the rise of slavery in the United States, the causes of the Civil War, the Underground Railroad, and the experiences of slaves in Kentucky. One day, the students were asked to put themselves in the “shoes” of a slave and make some decisions that might help them achieve freedom. The activity opened students’ eyes to some of the hardships slaves faced, and allowed them to experience the trust and strong instincts necessary for slaves to escape on the Underground Railroad. Michelle Jackson FIFTH GRADE The 5th graders learned about biomes around the world. They spent time researching the individual biomes, the locations of each, what makes them unique, and the SECOND GRADE animals that inhabit the areas. Deborah M. Richardson SEVENTH GRADE The 7th grade science classes at Mary Queen are finishing a unit about animals. In this unit, we dissected starfish to learn about the external and internal anatomy of starfish and how they are uniquely created for their habitat and ecological role. We also studied mammals and conducted a lab to see how human opposable thumbs affect our daily activities. It has been a great unit to examine God's RELIGION creation more deeply and appreciate how He has created 7B religion students recently worked in groups to create us uniquely. their own modern day parable skits. They rehearsed and performed for their class, and after receiving constructive feedback from their peers, they made improvements and took their show on the road (down the hall) to perform for the 7A religion class. The 7th graders are also earning service hours in Religion class by helping set up the gym on Fridays for the MQ fish fries.
