Spirit of St. Francis Newsletter for Alumni and Friends of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Schools, Humphrey, Nebraska Winter 2020 At the annual Humphrey Veteran’s Day program in November, 10 mem- bers of the community were given a Quilt a Valor. Honored with a quilt this year were front row l-r: Alvin Kuta (1947), Ray Krings (1966), Tom Wemhoff, Dave Fuchs (1951), and Jerome Foltz (1954); back row l-r: Mark Foltz (1949), Ferd Zach (1949), Bob Zach (1949), Bill Albracht (1949), and Gene Schueth (1955). From the President… I once again would like to take a moment to thank all of you for your prayers and sup- port. St. Francis depends on so many people for so many things and we are grateful for that support. Please continue to pray for us that the students entrusted to our care may grow in their love for Jesus Christ. It's been a stellar year so far at St. Francis. The success of our extra-curricular activities is once again outstanding. Not only did we have state qualifiers in volleyball, cross-country and choir, but we also had a state championship in football. It was certainly a great fall to be a Flyer! Less heralded, but certainly not less important, the academic year at St. Francis is firing on all cylin- ders. We are so blessed with a teaching and administrative staff that understands the priority of educa- tion. Of course, these functions of Catholic education pail in comparison with our goal of forming Catholic disciples. Students are receiving confession and the Eucharist more frequently and this is having a transforming effect on the student body. I rejoice that so many of our staff and faculty prioritize their Catholic faith and see their support of the school as a type of ministry. As a heads up, I wanted to make you aware of the alumni appeal that is about to begin. Your generous support, both financially and spiritually is essential to the survival of our school, and I can’t thank you enough for it. If I can ever be assistance, please feel free to contact me. In Christ, From the Principal… Thank you to all who helped support our annual Blue and White Night this year. Your financial support and, for some of you, your presence at the event helps make the event successful. This fundraiser directly assists St. Francis School’s operations. A fellow alumnus, Kim Krings (2013), was invited to school to speak to students about her call to missionary work. She has joined the Family Missions Company, based out of Louisiana and has been assigned to Taiwan for two years. She shared with the students what she was expecting to do when ministering in Taiwan, most importantly bringing the love of Jesus Christ to the vastly pagan community in which she will be living. Please keep her and her missionary work in your prayers. With the high school over 50 years old, the front office doors are in need of replacement. Money for new doors have been raised, so work on replacing these will begin at the end of this school year. Thank you to anyone who donated to this specific cause. I want to thank you for your continued prayers and support. Whether your support is in the form of prayer, time, talent, or treasure, our students and church benefit. We are one church, encountering Jesus, equipping disciples, living mercy. May you and your family have a blessed Lenten season. Blessings, Jennifer Dunn
The 2019 St. Francis Flyers football team ended a perfect season with a State Championship. After an 8-0 regular season, the Flyers faced Elgin Public/Pope John in the first round of playoffs. With a 68-6 win, the Flyers met Lawrence-Nelson, beating them 60-14. With the win, the team traveled to Plainview to take on the pirates. Proving why they were the #1 seed, the pirates were taken down 60-20. In the closest game of the season, the Flyers took on the Fighting Irish of Fall City Sacred Heart in Humphrey. While it was a one possession game, the blue came out on top, 24-16, earning a spot in the D-2 Championship at Memorial Stadium. It was here the Flyers met Pleasanton and earned a gold metal with a 70-16 win. Congratulations to our Flyer Football Team and Coaches! The St. Francis Lady Flyer volleyball team showed with hard work and perseverance, so much it possible. After a 3-2 start to the season, the Lady Flyers knew they had a lot of work to do if they wanted to achieve their goal of winning a state championship. With hard work and dedication, the team ended the regular season 23-4, knowing it was now or never. The Lady Flyers won their subdistrict and district matches, all in 3 sets, earning them a trip to the state tournament in Lincoln. St. Francis entered the tournament as the #5 seed, with an opening game against Garden County. The Lady Flyers won the game in 3 sets and next faced the #1 seeded Lawrence-Nelson Raiders. In a very close 5-set match, the Lady Flyers came out on top, sending them to the state championship at Bob Devaney Sports Center. Here they faced #3 BDS (Bruning- Davenport/Shickley). Here the Lady Flyers found themselves down 2-0 in the final before making a comeback and forcing a 5 set thriller. Unfortunately, we came up short in the end to finish as State Runner-Up. Congratulations to our Lady Flyer Volleyball Team and Coaches! The St. Francis Cross County team may have been small, but they accomplished many great things. With 3 boys and 4 girls, the team saw great growth throughout the season. In the Goldenrod Conference meet, the girls team finished 3rd while the boys team finished 4th. At districts, Leah Podliska placed 6th and Madison Stricklin placed 12th, both earning a trip to the State meet in Kearney. Unfortunately, neither one metaled at state but both competed very well.

On June 2, 1951, Ray and Lenore Eisenmenger were united in marriage at St. Francis Catholic Church. Shortly after their wedding Ray was deployed to South Korea to serve in the United States Army. After being injured at the front, he was assigned to the 558th Military Police Com- pany where he rapidly attained the rank of Sergeant. One of the highlights of his military career was guarding President-Elect Dwight D. Eisenhower during his visit to Korea in December, 1952. Ray and Lenore farmed the family farm southeast of Humphrey until the mid-90s, raising seven children. Ray also founded K-W Construction with Jim Krings. Upon the death of his good friend Kenny Pfeifer, he was asked by Norfolk Mutual Insurance Company to manage Kenny's accounts. He be- came a field agent and was eventually elected to the Board as Secretary-Treasurer, a position he held for 20 years and to which he was reelected last summer. He loved to play cards. With five other couples, he and Lenore were members of a sheepshead club for over 60 years. He was one of the founding members of Steepleview Golf Course and played golf almost daily until age 88, having the distinction of making two “nests in one” in a tree near the 9th hole. Ray and Lenore took swing dance classes and enjoyed dancing to the big bands at nearby ballrooms. He was an avid gardener and was very proud of his lawn; he never felt better than when riding his mower. Ray played basketball in high school and was selected Nebraska All- State at the center position in 1946, described in the press as a “feared sharpshooter.” He and Lenore were great fans of all St. Francis High School sports, attending games long after their children and grandchildren graduated. With his good friend Bob Olmer he would park his pickup at the football field to get a prime view, and they would share a flask of “The Recipe” to keep warm during the game. Ray belonged to American Legion Post 80 and the Knights of Columbus, also serving as Grand Knight. They had to roust a priest to perform the ceremony, which happened to be the late Archbishop Sheehan. The couple returned home to begin their life together on the farm in Rural Platte County. Mom raised chickens both for the eggs and her famous fried chicken, and hauled a lot of eggs to town. They were blessed with nine children, filling a whole pew in church at St. Stanislaus by themselves. Mom was busy attending school functions and countless ball games, missing very few. She also sang in the choir every Sunday. She joined the work force in the 70's, spending the next 30 years doing books for Lohr Petroleum. A bookkeeper at heart, she loved “doing her books” at Lohr's and for the farm. She worked endlessly, never punching a clock, then came home to make supper. After retiring from her day job, she got a riding lawnmower and found her new passion, mowing the yard. It took her twice as long to mow as someone else could, but her finished project was done correctly and no flowers were harmed. Even the ditch flowers would survive. She was an avid flower gardener. Her final years at home were spent watching her grandkids grow up and enjoying the seeds that she had planted. She never missed anyone's birthday. During his last deployment, he brought a little something back to share with his alma mater. Having signed up for the National Guard in 2002 between his junior and senior years of high school, he went to basic training for 9 weeks in Fort Jackson, South Carolina the summer directly after his senior year in 2003. Then immediately after basic training, he was put on a bus and sent to Fort Lee, Virginia for AIT (Advanced Individual Train- ing) for 8 weeks of training as a Unit Supply Specialist. The job of a unit supply specialist is the general upkeep and maintenance of all Army supplies and equipment. Jared was first deployed in February of 2004 to Iraq and returned home in January of 2006. He wasn’t deployed again until June 2016 when he went to Kuwait, returning in January 2017. His latest deployment was in January 2019 to Afghanistan, returning home on November 24, 2019. While on his most recent deployment Jared ordered 4 flags off the internet that represented Humphrey St. Fran- cis that he flew on his chinook on combat tours. Of the 4 flags, one was donated to the Blue & White Night fundraiser, 1 was lost when his helicopter went down on a combat mission, and the other 2 are hanging in a wooden frame in the St. Francis high school and grade school. Pictured above is Jared holding the flag out of his chinook on a certificate of authenticity. (Article written by Trevor Pfeifer for HSF Dispatch.) LET US PRAY Please keep in prayer our beloved Alumni and the families of those serving in the Armed Forces, along with all U.S. soldiers, who are serving worldwide in harms way.

She is keeping her self active, attending water aerobics four times a week. Nice job Rose! To preach the gospel and serve the poor is the message Kim Krings (2013) wants to share. Krings returned to her roots on Tuesday, January 7, to speak to the students and faculty about her upcoming missionary service in Taiwan as a lay Catholic missionary for the Family Missions Company headquartered in Louisiana. From the moment she stood in front of us, Kim showed her excitement and love for serving others and her Faith. She shared with us many amusing stories along with the account of answering her call. Kim had been pondering the idea of becoming a missionary for the longest time, but she never knew if this was God’s plan for her. During a time of reflection and prayer at a bible study she called out to Jesus and Saint Therese of Lisieux to send her a rose as a sign if she was meant to be a missionary. Moments after her prayers, the bible study leader and close friend asked her to take a look at her new phone background-- which was indeed full of roses. Right then Kim knew the answer to all her questions and decided to answer the call by applying to Family Missions Company. Kim moved to Louisiana in June to start her new life of service to others. She currently lives in large house with seven other single women and a family of five. Others from around her neighborhood regularly meet in her home to eat meals and join in conversation, which always begins in song and prayer. She spent the summer of 2019 as an intern for the Family Missions Company doing office work and many other service projects until she began missionary training in Sep- tember. One presentation Kim remembers vividly from her training was a speech on breakfast. The speaker asked those in attendance, “Out of all the breakfast food which animal gives the most? Though the cow gives up some milk and the chick- en may give and egg or two, the pig gives his life for us to enjoy sausage. The message: “Be the Bacon.” This encourages us to give our whole self up is the service of others for Jesus. To kick start her missionary career Kim is being sent to Tai- wan to live and serve with another woman (who is from Nebraska City) and a family of five. Kim explained that being poor can mean having very little money, but it also means living without a knowledge and understanding of Christ and His great love for us. Though many residents who live in Taiwan have homes and running water, they are poor in that they do not have the knowledge of Jesus. She and her fellow missionaries will be working to “preach the gospel and serve the poor” the mission statement of the Family Missions Company. After her presentation, Kim was presented a check from St. Francis to assist with the funding needed for her to be a missionary. (Articles written by Peighton Eisenmenger for the HSF Dispatch.)
