SME/NSSGA STUDENT DESIGN COMPETITION Since 2004, SME and the National Stone, Sand & Gravel Association (NSSGA) have sponsored a Student Design Contest. During the fall semester, 18 teams of college students began working on Phase 1 of the 12th Annual Competition. Each team had three weeks to prepare a design feasibility study on the Patterson Quarry using the data that had been gathered during the due diligence process. The students were asked to provide designs and recommendations for site layout, reserve estimate, operational plan and environmental impacts. After the final submittal date, six industry judges read and reviewed each team’s evaluation of the property. The teams with the top six Phase 1 scores were selected to participate in Phase 2 of the competition. The 2020-2021 winning teams are: 1st Place: University of Arizona – Aggregate Mining Solutions 2nd Place: Colorado School of Mines – Underminers 3rd Place: Virginia Tech – Checkmate Consultants Sponsored by: Innovator Sponsor: National Stone, Sand and Gravel Association (NSSGA) Connector Sponsors: Lehigh Hanson, Luck Stone, Martin Marietta, Vulcan Materials, Cedar Mountain Stone Resource Supporters: Blue Water Industries, Costmine SME METALLIC STUDENT DESIGN COMPETITION The Metallic Student Design Competition (SDC) is a hard rock competition focused on the eval- uation of a mineral deposit (precious/base metal or industrial mineral) and the development of a potential flowsheet and process design. Newly created in 2020, Metallic SDC is modeled after the SME/NSSGA competition, which is based on an aggregate mining industry design problem. Eighteen teams representing 5 continents and 8 countries entered Phase 1 of the competition in the Fall of 2020. Six teams were selected to compete in Phase 2 during the Annual Conference. The 2020-2021 SME Metallic Student Design Competition winners are: 1st Place: Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos – RTC Mining Consulting 2nd Place: Universidad Nacional de Ingerieria – UNI Mining Peruvian Consulting 3rd Place: University of Arizona – Wildcat Junior Team Sponsored by: Influencer Sponsor: Rio Tinto Software Supporters: Costmine, Hexagon Mining, Metsim International 16 2021 | SME/AIME AWARDS PROGRAM
HENRY KRUMB LECTURERS Modern mining began with Daniel Jackling. However, it was a contemporary of Jackling, Henry Krumb, who integrated various mining units into the corporate structures – such as Kennecott Copper and Newmont Mining - which could attract the investment capital and could find the skilled labor force necessary to develop natural resources on a scale large enough to supply world demand. AIME established the Henry Krumb Lecture Series in 1966 in honor of Mr. Krumb’s contributions to the Institute and the industry. SME took over the administration of the Henry Krumb Lecture Series in the early 1980s. The purpose of the Krumb Lecture Series is to offer members of our local sections the opportunity to hear prominent minerals professionals speak on subjects in which they have recognized expertise. The Krumb Lecturers are selected each year, following the annual meeting, when session chairs nominate the best presentation from their session for consideration. The SME Program Committee then selects the annual slate of lecturers from those nominees who are willing to serve. This year’s Krumb lecturers have risen to the challenge of providing professional development opportunities to our local Sections by presenting virtually. Online presentations have been offered to local Section members and advertised to SME members and the mining and minerals industry through the SME Community.
