First Sunday of Lent Page 4 A Message from Fr. Roberto What is Lent About? Every car or truck carries in the glove compartment a maintenance schedule. Having your oil changed, your tires rotated and balanced, and the rest of the engine checked keeps your vehicle in excellent shape. Lent provides us an opportunity to open our personal maintenance schedule and take a close look at ourselves as we journey towards eternal life. Lent provides us with an ex- cellent opportunity to strengthen ourselves so that we can keep moving against the current of ego, pleasure and materialism that surrounds us. A successful Lent requires us to develop a serious plan of action. Aside from what the Church law of fast and abstinence requires of us, we should come up with a personal program for spiritual growth. This is our personal mainte- nance program. I have always recommended that we come up with some- thing we give up and something extra we do. h ps://i.pinimg.com/originals/f1/b2/86/ f1b286ff4eda326707719231667bfe8c.gif We can give up one or more things. This sacrifice should be serious and de- manding. The self-control that we exercise in giving up a legitimate pleasure strengthens our will and sense of discipline, and it curbs the inclinations of our passions. It is good for us to tell ourselves “no” now and then! Then, we should also do some kind of extra act that we would not normally do on a regular basis. Attending daily Mass, visiting the sick, volunteering time at the parish or praying a Sunday evening Rosary with the en- tire family are positive acts of virtue that have helped many people progress in their relationship with God. Lenten practices of penance have great benefits for our spiritual lives. A serious Lent will be like a spring cleaning which will purify the clutter that has accumulated in our souls. A serious commitment to penance will also help us to conquer addictions, obsessions and compulsive behavior. A serious Lent will purify our soul and allow us to experience a deeper interior freedom. As we begin our Lenten season, we should take some time and carefully examine our lives. Usually we fo- cus on carefully examining the sins we commit, but do we ever consider the sins of omission? Do we honest- ly consider the good things that we are not doing and that we should be doing? First Sunday of Lent Page 8 Together in Mission Annual Appeal 2022 “As One We Believe” March 6 - Follow up Sunday Archbishop Gomez invites us to make our annual commitment to help our parishes and schools that need our help. If you have made a gift in the past, a letter should have arrived at your home this past week asking you to renew your support. You can return that pledge card via mail or make your pledge at www.togetherinmission.org/give. This year’s theme, As One We Believe, was personally chosen by our Archbishop Jose Gomez. It is a special message from our leader that anything is possible if we believe as one family of faith.
