AT YOUR SERVICE by Kim O'Donnell In like a lion out like a lamb, the phrase that describes March. We have had our fair share of uncharacteristi- cally wintery weather. The one hundred year pandemic followed by the one hundred year snowstorm, a storm Memphians are unaccustomed to weathering. Then the great melt down whereby the water shortages will segue into a water abundance. In looking back, on March 13, 2020 the Resident Association called a meeting to discuss the pandemic situa- tion and made the bold decision to cancel happy hour at Trezevant. Fast forward to March 2021 and 98% of the independent living residential population has been vaccinated against Covid 19. Remarkable progress for science, healthcare and our residents. We look forward to opening up, restrictions withstanding, and fortunately can plan on the return of some of our favorites. NCAA Mens basketball bracketology is back, brackets may be picked up from Resident Services on Monday, March 15th following Selection Sunday on March 14th. Turn into Resident Services by end of busi- ness Wednesday, March 17th with your selections through the Final game and $5.00 wager. Be sure to copy your brackets so you may follow along, with play beginning March 18th and the Championship game scheduled for April 5th. The Memphis Sym- phony Orchestra will resume performances, for season ticket holders, on Saturday, March 13th at the Cannon Center. This is their first of the season after being unable to perform during 2020 with additional performances to follow. Trezevant will offer transportation, weather permitting, sign up in the Activity Book. BE WELL by Rinnie Wood Walking meditations will take place at 3:15 every Tuesday in March. We will walk on the grounds, weather permitting, with guided meditations offered by Chaplain Julie McKenna. This is suitable for most fitness levels, as we can stroll or sit as we meditate. This will be a spiritual and physical adventure in wellness! Below is a summary of the article in FITNESS HEALTH WELLNESS SEPTEMBER 27, 2020 THE BENEFITS OF WALKING MEDITATION by Sweta Sivastava Vikram It’s a misconception that the only way to med- itate is to sit quietly in a corner with your eyes closed and chant “Om.” That’s one way to med- itate. If you are new to meditation, or are the restless type, or sit all day at work, you might feel challenged by a seated meditation practice. Walking meditation might be better for you. DEFINING WALKING MEDITATION Walking meditation is an active practice that re- quires you to be consciously aware and moving in the environment. It allows you to be aware of the pleasure of walking. It is much less overwhelm- ing for beginners as walking is part of our daily lives. You use your walking as the main focus. This motion helps you become more aware of your body. Walking meditation is a way to practice moving without a goal or intention. It means walking with awareness of each step, thought, emotion, and breath. The bustle and noise of a city actually can help you focus deeply inward, as you connect your thoughts to the stimuli around you. Taking the time to slow down, breathe, and listen to the world around me helps me put my life in perspective and keep me focused on what really matters. THE BENEFITS OF WALKING MEDITATION This combination of meditating and walking can have both emotional and physical benefits.
