Twenty-Second Sunday in Ordinary Time Let Us Celebrate W elcome! We are glad you are here to join us in worship in the celebra on of the Eucharist (Mass). At the Eucharist, the Church comes together to hear the Word of the Lord, to pray for the world's needs, to offer the sacrifice of the Cross in praise and thanks to God, to receive Christ Jesus in communion, and then to be sent forth in the Spirit as disciples of the Gospel. If you are not familiar with the Mass, the Order of the Mass can be found on pages 3-29 of the Breaking Bread hymnal. We call par cular a en on to the text of the Gloria and the Nicene Creed located on the inside cover. The scripture (Bible) readings for today's Mass can be found on pages 203. August 29, 2021 “Be doers of the word, and not hearers only” we read in this Sunday’s second reading from the Le er of James. This sums up what all our readings are about today. We know which friends are reliable and close not by their words, but by their ac ons. We know that someone loves us less because s/he tells us with words, more because s/he shows us with care, tenderness and compassion. When pressed by the Pharisees in today’s gospel, Jesus makes the same argument. True followers of the Lord are not recognized as such by their tles, social status or ability to ar culate profound philosophical concepts, but by their simple ac ons. They are merciful just as our Father in heaven is merciful. They are pa ent just as God is pa ent with us. They know that humility is the path to holiness, that the only way to be extraordinary is to do the ordinary things well. We display our true wisdom and intelligence (Deuteronomy 4) not by telling others all that we know, but by listening to and obeying what God has revealed to us. There are so many saints of recent memory who did exactly this: Therese of Lisieux, Padre Pio, Maximilian Kolbe, Theresa of Calcu a, Oscar Romero. Let us follow their example and strive to be more humble, to listen to others more a en vely, to follow God’s commands more faithfully. — Kyle Gregg Psalm 89:9 “You rule the raging of the sea; when its waves rise, you s ll them.” Star of the Sea Parish Blessing of the Ocean in Salisbury Saturday, August 14, 2021 3
