Office of Vicar General Reverend Monsignor Thomas P. Melvin To: Priests, Deacons, Diocesan Employees, Parish Administrators, Parish Secretaries, and Seminarians From: Rev. Msgr. Thomas P. Melvin, Vicar General Re: May Diocesan Update Date: May 1, 2019 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Jesus, I trust in You! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ From the Bishop Mass for Consecrated Life: The 2019 celebration of the World Day for Consecrated Life in the Diocese of Winona- Rochester will be Wednesday, May 22. To thank God for the life and ministry of the consecrated women and men serving the Diocese of Winona-Rochester, to ask God’s blessings upon them, and to pray for added vocations to the consecrated life, all consecrated men and women, priests, and deacons are invited to join Bishop Quinn in the celebration of the Holy Eucharist at the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart in Winona at 12:10 p.m. on May 22, 2019. Priests are invited to concelebrate and deacons are welcome to vest. Those who plan to stay for lunch after Mass are asked to please contact Mrs. Stacey Glithero at 507-858-1242 or sglithero@dowr.org, by May 15, with the number attending. Office of Divine Worship: Easter Season: Below are some final reflections from Paschalis Solemnitatis and the Roman Missal for the Easter Season: "This sacred period of fifty days concludes with Pentecost Sunday when the gift of the Holy Spirit to the Apostles, the beginnings of the Church and the start of its mission to all tongues and peoples and nations are commemorated. Encouragement should be given to the prolonged celebration of Mass in the form of a vigil, whose character is not baptismal as in the Easter Vigil, but is one of urgent prayer, after the example of the Apostles and disciples, who persevered together in prayer with Mary, the Mother of Jesus, as they awaited the Holy Spirit." (PS 117). The revised Roman Missal provides an order for an extended vigil at the Pentecost Vigil Mass. This order closely mirrors that of the Easter Vigil. A detailed explanation of this rite is found in the Pentecost Vigil Mass section of the Missal. The readings which may be chosen, if the extended vigil is celebrated, are found in the Lectionary for Mass for Sundays and Solemnities. The Mass for Pentecost day, like the Easter Day Mass, includes a Sequence. The General Instruction of the Roman Missal provides a reminder that on this day, as on Easter Sunday, the Sequence is not optional. (RM 33)
"Moreover, the wondrous mystery of the real presence of the Lord under the Eucharistic species, confirmed by the Second Vatican Council and other teachings of the Church’s Magisterium in the same sense and with the same doctrine as the Council of Trent proposed that it must be believed, is proclaimed in the celebration of the Mass, not only by the very words of consecration by which Christ is rendered present through transubstantiation, but also with a sense and a demonstration of the greatest reverence and adoration which strives for realization in the Eucharistic liturgy. For the same reason, the Christian people are led to worship this wondrous Sacrament through adoration in a special way on Thursday of the Lord’s Supper in Holy Week and on the Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ." (RM 20-21) The Roman Missal encourages a Eucharistic Procession in connection with the Feast of the Body and Blood of Christ. If the procession takes place at the end of Mass, a description of how it is to begin is found at the end of the texts of the Mass. The instructions for the procession itself are found in the ritual book Holy Communion and Worship of the Eucharist Outside of Mass, pages 74-75. "The Gloria in excelsis (Glory to God in the highest) is a most ancient and venerable hymn by which the Church, gathered in the Holy Spirit, glorifies and entreats God the Father and the Lamb." (RM 31) If a parish does not regularly sing the Gloria, the Solemnities at the end of the Easter Season provide good opportunities to introduce the singing of the Gloria on more solemn occasions. Office of Missionary Discipleship, Lay Formation and RCIA: RCIA Thank you: Thank you! ...to all RCIA coordinators and team members, pastors, parochial vicars, deacons, parish staff, etc. for your generous and faith-filled service during this past year to those who were initiated / received into the Church this Easter. Pre-Cana: Please see the attached PDF listing of Pre-Cana offerings for 2019-2020. Thank you to all those parishes who host Pre-Cana for the Diocese of Winona-Rochester. Please contact Peter Martin (pmartin@dowr.org / 507-858-1273) if you are interested in other ways of preparing couples for the Sacrament of Matrimony. The Pre-Cana Program is convenient, but a one-on-one marriage preparation (accompaniment) is the direction to which Pope Francis is calling us. Thank you for all you do to prepare couples for marriage in the Diocese of Winona-Rochester! 3
Office of the Tribunal: Auditors: When testimony and witness interviews are needed for marriage nullity cases, the Winona-Rochester marriage Tribunal is happy to be able to accommodate people from all regions of our diocese thanks to the work of our dedicated volunteer Auditors located throughout our diocesan territory. An Auditor’s primary task is conducting in-person interviews, but they are also often the main pastoral “face” of the Tribunal, and their service helps parties experience the nullity process as more human and user-friendly. In recent years, however, many of the diocese’s Auditors have retired or phased out of this role for various personal reasons. Because of this, the Tribunal is in need of other dedicated individuals in parish life to take on this important work. Because the work of Auditors is so delicate and sensitive, Tribunal staff is asking Pastors to prayerfully consider which members of their parishes may be a good fit for this role, and to contact the Tribunal with names of possible candidates. An absolutely essential quality of a potential Auditor is the ability to maintain confidentiality. Auditors should also have good communication and people skills, as well as a basic understanding of and respect for Church teaching. Please contact Jenna Cooper (507-858-1260 / jcooper@dowr.org) or Fr. Glenn Frerichs (507- 858-1261 / gfrerichs@dowr.org) with suggestions for potential Auditors. The Tribunal will then contact those individuals identified by their Pastors, to further explain the role of an Auditor and consider with them whether they would be a good candidate for this particular form of service within the Church’s ministry of justice. Catholic Foundation of Southern Minnesota: Seeds of Faith Applications: The Seeds of Faith tuition assistance applications have been sent out to schools. Please note that sections B and G of the application must be signed either by the pastor (or parish administrator, if the pastor is unavailable) or the school administrator. Attached is the letter sent to pastors and schools. Passé Scholarship: The Passé Scholarship for St. Felix (Wabasha), St. Agnes (Kellogg), and Immaculate Conception (Kellogg) parishes will be starting its application process soon, with applications being sent out to those three parishes on April 1. Attached is the letter to the parishes regarding this scholarship. Stewardship Conference: Pastors, Parish Administrators, Stewardship Council members, School Principals, and Advancement Directors are encouraged to consider attending the 2019 International Catholic Stewardship Council’s annual conference. If you would like more information, visit their website. Grant funding may be available; contact Monica Herman at mherman@catholicfsmn.org or 507-858-1276. Immaculate Heart of Mary Seminary: Graduations: On Saturday, May 11, Immaculate Heart of Mary Seminary will have seven seminarians graduate from St. Mary’s University and IHMS. There will also be a Baccalaureate Mass for the graduates on Friday, May 10. The seminarians who are graduating are John Wilebski (Diocese of Crookston), who is going on to St. Meinrad Seminary, Meinrad, IN; David Drefcinski (Diocese of Madison), who will be going on to Sacred Heart Seminary, Detroit, MI; Alex Kren and John Zweber (Diocese of La Crosse), both of whom are going on to St. Francis de Sales Seminary, Milwaukee, WI; Daniel Dionesotes (Diocese of Peoria), who is going on to Mount St. Mary’s Seminary, Cincinnati, OH; Cullen Gallagher (Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis); and Matthew Koestler (Diocese of Winona-Rochester), who is going on to Sacred Heart Seminary, Detroit, MI. Please continue to pray for these men as they start this next step in their lives. Office of Vicar General: August Update: Due to the amount of information that needs to be communicated to parishes before the beginning of the school year, there will now be a Diocesan Update published in August. As usual, the deadline for submitting items for inclusion is the 25th of the month before. 4
