Sørvågen radio gives you the answers to these and many other questions. The museum has a rich, exciting collection of newer and older objects related to the theme. See our ex- hibition of mobile phones, compare your own with the 1973 edition – there is a bit of a difference! In the museum there are beautiful exhibitions that appeal to many age groups and interests. The farm consists of a farmhouse, a barn, a pier and a boathouse.These are open for visitors, and a guide is available. Here you can learn how the traditional fishermen-farmers lived, and how they fed their families on what the ocean and the small patches of land could provide. The arctic cod migrates from the Barents sea to the waters of Lofoten every winter to spawn. Fisheries in Lofoten are based on fishing this important resource. The museum is located in a former herring oil factory on the outer breakwater at Melbu. See unique photos that portray the history of this imporant factory, and view an exhibition about fisheries and the history of the factory. Over the course of three decades this quiet farm grew into a small industrialized city. In the center of all the activity stood Christian Frederiksen, businessman and owner of Melbo Mansion. Visitors will get to know Frederiksen and his family through a slideshow of historic photographs, music and adverts for the products that were made in Melbo. Our guide will show you around the mansion and share stories about the family that called this stately house their home. The museum shows the exhibition ‘Seabed’. It is the importance of the sea in the North, the vulnerable ecosystem in the ocean and the consequences of marine pollution and pollution in general that are the themes of the exhibition. Seabed is primarily aimed at children and young people, but this is a spectacular exhibition that also appeals to adults. Sortland museum has collaborated with artists and designers to realize OPENING HOURS/PRICES the project. Throughout the exhibition there are many exciting activities for children and youth. The building is located by the sea, easily accessible by boat – as it had to be in the old days. Time has stood still after the closing of the shop in 1982. Shelves stretched from floor to ceiling display authentic products of all kinds, and the smell of chewing tobacco and ground coffee still lingers in the air. Jennestad Trading Post is located 8 kilometers north west of Sortland OPENING HOURS/PRICES (watch for a sign by the road). Visitors can buy locally produced arts and crafts (husflid), postcards, sweets, literature and more. www.museumnord.no // 17 PHOTOS: KJELL OVE STORVIK Bø Museum, Vinjesjøen Queen of Fairytales and Artscape Nordland BØ MUSEUM IS LOCATED at beautiful surroundings at Vinjesjøen. The theme of the museum is storytelling. The tradition of storytelling is one of the oldest traditions we have that is still alive and well. In Northern Norway the stories were often connected to the landscape and weather. Lots of kids have been frightened by stories of Draugen and the people that live underground, and some are still afraid of the dark. One of our finest storytellers is the author Regine Normann. She tells stories of life in the old times in Bø. She is also an author of fairytales where you get to meet Draugen and some of the other walking dead. These stories are OPENING HOURS/PRICES very much connected to our fisherman´s cottage and our boathouse. Let us show you how Øksnes and Myre grew into a high-tech fishing village – a story that will take you more than 10 000 years back in time. Look into the old mailhouse from the second half of the 1800s. Buy sweets and trinkets at old Alsvåg trading post, or enjoy a cup of coffee in historical surroundings in the formal living room of the manor. Every summer we display a new exhibit. The house previously served as the main office for Bjørkaasen OPENING HOURS 2021 Gruber mining company. The village once housed a trading post, a telegraph office and a steam boat expedition. The old village post office here remained amazingly intact. Norwegian author Knut Hamsun worked here for a while, and it’s said that he once rescued a merchant´s daughter from drowning. The charming OPENING HOURS/PRICES old buildings are from the 1700–1900s. OPENING HOURS 2021 Korsnes Museum features an exhibition about photographer The museum will be open at the weekends in July. Opening times will be announced at Magdalene Norman (1877–1979).
