Our Lady of Lourdes - February 11 Our Lady of Lourdes is a Roman Catholic title of the Blessed Virgin Mary venerated in honour of the Marian apparitions that occurred in 1858 in the vicinity of Lourdes in France. The first of these is the apparition of 11 February 1858, when 14-year old Bernadette Soubirous told her mother that a "lady" spoke to her in the cave of Massabielle while she was gathering firewood with her sister and a friend. Similar appa- ritions of the "Lady" were reported on eighteen occasions that year, until the climax revelation of Our Lady of the Im- maculate Conception took place. St. Scholastica, Virgin - February 10 St. Scholastica was the twin sister of St. Benedict, the Patriarch of Western mo- nasticism. She was born in Umbria, Italy, about 480. Under Benedict's direc- tion, Scholastica founded a community of nuns near the great Benedictine monastery Monte Cassino. Inspired by Benedict's teaching, his sister devoted her whole life to seeking and serving God. St. Scholastica, like her brother, dedicated herself to God from early youth. Benedict was informed of his sister's death by a divine sign: he saw his sister’s soul ascend to Heaven in the form of a white dove. St. Cyril, Monk & St. Methodius, Bishop - February 14, These two brothers were born in Thessalonica. Saint Cyril was sent to Constantinople to study, where he became known as the Philosopher; but it was the Holy Church that he desired to serve, and he was ordained a priest. While Cyril was still young, Cyril founded churches and furnished them with excellent ministers, he was next mis- sioned to Bulgaria with his younger brother Methodius, who was a monk of eminent sanctity. Saint Methodius, an excellent artist, was delegated to paint in the palace for the king, a scene which could frighten the beholders, he chose for subject the Last Judgment. The king was so impressed that after being instructed he was baptized, with forty-eight of his followers. The two brothers preached also in Moravia. It was there that Saint Cyril invented a Slavonic alphabet, translating the Bible and other writings from Greek and Latin into the language of the Slavic peoples. St. Valentine, Priest/Bishop - February 14 A priest named Valentine who lived in Rome was put in prison because he helped some Christians who were going to be executed by a cruel emperor named Claudius. While Valentine was in prison, he healed the chief warder’s daughter, who was blind, and the warder and all his family became Christians. When Emperor heard this, Valentine should be executed. And so, on February 14 in the year 269, Valentine was clubbed to death. Then his head was chopped off, just to make sure he was dead. In the same year, another man named Valentine, who was the bishop of Terni, was also put to death by Emperor Claudius for being a Christian. Neither saint seems to have anything to do with young lovers. So where do the traditions come from? Some say it is because on this day of the year (in the northern hemisphere) birds pair up and start mating.
