8 February 2018 KING’S HOUSE SCHOOL Newsletter Dear Parents We heard some wonderful news to do with Senior School awards at the end of last week. Four of our current Year 8s have gained awards to their Senior Schools in a range of disciplines. On the Arts side, Tyler has been awarded a Music Exhibition by Cranleigh for his singing and Hugo has won a Drama Scholarship to Hampton School. Also for Hampton, two boys have won Sports Scholarships – Zack and Nico. This is a tremendous achievement by the boys in what are very competitive awards. Well done to them all. We’ve been lucky enough to have more music concerts this week – one breakfast and one tea. We had a host of singers on Tuesday morning, which is proving to be a popular time for these short performances, while on Monday evening we had a marvellous array of instruments and styles of music – violins, clarinet, electric guitar, piano… Well done to all the performers. We were delighted to be able to host the first round of the Prep Schools Chess Competition last Saturday here at King's House. We had four teams competing and three made it through to the next round – there’s a report later on in the newsletter. Uniform Review - We have reached the final stages of our rather long-running review of uniform and as part of this we looked at two possible house ties in the SD assembly on Monday. These are versions By Saarvin of the current school tie with an extra stripe showing the house colour. The idea went down well with the SD boys and they had a clear favourite on the style of tie. Please see the attached letter which highlight the small number of changes we are making. Thank you to everyone who attended the Y4 Future Schools evening. Our aim is provide parents with a better understanding of the system and what they can be doing to help. If you have any feedback on the event please do let me know. And finally may I wish you all a restful half-term. Mark Turner Page 1
King’s House School Newsletter 8 February 2018 Notes from the Nursery Department 'Harry and his bucket full of dinosaurs.' It floats! Up, up and away! Dear Parents This first half of the spring term seems to have flown by but I think we are all more than ready for the half-term break. We started the week with some lovely news, Mrs Nesbitt and her husband welcomed a baby girl into their family. We are delighted for them and send huge congratulations. There have been buckets full of dinosaurs all over Caterpillar classroom this week. Harry and his bucket full of dinosaurs is one of our favourite stories and I think I now know it off by heart, as I have been asked to read it every time I have gone into the classroom! It always amazes me how even our two year olds can identify and name so many dinosaurs. Well done Caterpillars! The Butterflies have now carried out extensive testing on the boats they had designed and made predications as to whether they would float or sink. I had quite an audience when I lowered my foil boat onto the water and was very relieved when the team of testers declared it was a success. I was immensely proud of all the children who had their hearing test this week. Every single child behaved impeccably, followed the instructions and sat and waited patiently. With a term and a half left of Nursery they really are showing us that they will be ready for school in September. Valentine’s Day, Shrove Tuesday and Chinese New Year all fall within half-term, so I do hope you all Did Mrs O'Brien's boat float? have a lovely break whatever you are doing. Jane O’Brien Page 2
King’s House School Newsletter 8 February 2018 Notes from the Junior Department Dear Parents On Friday Mr Cheung came in to talk to Year 2 about Chinese New Year which falls on February 16th. Ably assisted by his son, Conor, Mr Cheung explained that Chinese New Year is celebrated with lots of delicious Chinese food and some very special sweets. The boys found out that children are given red envelopes with money inside, which is considered to bring good luck. They also found out that Year 2 boys were either born in the Year of the Tiger or Rabbit and this Year it is the Year of the Dog. On Saturday, as you will see from the match report, some of the boys in Year 2 and 3 represented King’s House at under 9 level in the first round of the National Primary Schools Chess Championship, Richmond Zonal. Mrs Summerscale was incredibly proud of all the boys who took part and gave a special mention to the U9 As who won their round. In Year 3 during PSHEE lessons the boys have been creating their own images and captions for a display in our lobby based on the book It’s Okay to be Different by Todd Parr. This followed on from an assembly we gave earlier in the term on the theme of anti-bullying and inclusion, which elicited some thoughtful responses from all ages. Parent may wish to take this opportunity to talk to their sons at home about what they have been learning on the subject in school and what it means to be respectful of each other’s differences. It has been another busy half term and I am sure the boys are ready for a well-earned break. I hope you all have a restful and enjoyable week and look forward to seeing everyone again on Monday 19th February. King’s House School Newsletter 8 February 2018 Sport News Saturday 24 February Please note the U12A and U13A fixtures with Northcote Lodge on Saturday 24 February have been moved to Saturday 17 March. U11 Rugby The U11s travelled to Rokeby on Friday afternoon to round off their first half of term’s rugby. Once again the year group did the school proud, scoring 31 tries in 4 matches. An outstanding way to round off the half-term from all the boys who contributed! U12 & U13 Rugby The U12 and U13 boys enjoyed a superb block of fixtures with St Benedict’s, which has always been one of our strongest fixtures over the years. The U13As put in their best performance to run in 10 tries, the U13Bs also scored 10 but could not quite come out on the right end of a tight result, whilst the C team also produced their finest performance to date to record an impressive victory. The U12As recovered from a slow start to once again run out comfortable winners in their game. The B and C teams both showed huge signs of progress, especially defensively, and although just came out on the wrong end of the result can be hugely proud of their development over the last few weeks. Magic Men It’s been a half term full of tries, offloads, tackling and fun! It’s been great to have a chance to reward so many boys over the last few weeks for their efforts. This week’s Magic Men are: U13A – Sam U13B – Sam & Oliver U13C – Harry U12A – Sean U12B – Ravi U12C – Kush U11A – Oliver U11B – Oliver U11C – Freddie U11D – Joshua U11E – Saarvin Page 4

King’s House School Newsletter 8 February 2018 Year 6 trip to the Neasden Temple Following this the boys sat in the Haveli or prayer hall and received a talk on the Hindu faith. The trip ended with two high points. Firstly, the boys were able to go and use the shop and secondly they were able to attend the Arti ceremony, a ceremony of light performed by monks accompanied by chanting, music and prayer. It was a short trip but action packed and the boys’ behaviour was tremendous. Mr M Callaghan On Monday 5 February, Year 6 travelled to Neasden to visit the magnificent Shri Swaminarayan Mandir. On arriving the boys watched a video presentation explaining how the temple was built by skilled Indian craftsmen, using stone from Bulgaria and India. The stone was then shipped back and the structure was fitted together like a jigsaw. In all it took three years to complete and was done so by a large army of volunteers. The boys then went and saw the shrines of the deities and an informative exhibition on Hinduism. Page 8

King’s House School Newsletter 8 February 2018 Charity News Next half-term, the whole school will be supporting Glass Door, a local charity which offers a hot meal and overnight accommodation to those who are homeless, during the months of November to April. The night shelters in Richmond Churches have begun this winter. By day homeless people are able to go to the Vineyard Community Centre for showers, clothes washing facilities, food, help and advice. With help from Glass Door support workers four people have already been able to move into accommodation. The guests really appreciate the friendliness, warmth and care shown. Some enjoy chatting while others are keen to get some sleep somewhere dry, warm and safe. The Nursery and Junior Department will be supporting the charity by baking cakes each week on Thursdays, to provide up to 20 homeless people with a delicious dessert after their hot meal. Details of the baking rota will be circulated after half-term. The Senior Department will be holding a mufti day early next term (date to follow) and we will be asking the SD boys to bring in warm socks and miniature toiletries rather than monetary donations for this. In addition, if you are flying over the half-term or fly regularly, we will have collection boxes in all three departments for unused flight toiletry bags and miniature hotel toiletries. To find out more about supporting Glass Door you can visit their website: www.glassdoor.org.uk or contact Helen from the Richmond Team Ministry; helen.williams@richmondteamministry.org Page 11
