William Bowley, Jr Shelter Trees with bronze plaque for 8-15 years Metal benches honoring 16-19 years Five Wind Sculptures of service honoring those who served 20+ years “Leafs of Honor” for 7 years or less The Belvidere Township Park District is a visual and living testament to that sentiment, with over 57 individuals who have given their time, energy and dedication as Board Commissioners over the past 100+ years to making the Belvidere Park District what it is today. We honor them all at our New Centennial Plaza. 57 volunteers extraordinaire, who transcended generations, but well understood the importance of giving back to their community. A collective spirit that has overseen the growth and enhancement of the services and programs the Park District provides. All while balancing the recreational needs of the community and the growth and preservation of open spaces for us all to enjoy. 12 parks, covering 320.7 acres with numerous courts, fields and shelters, seven miles of walking paths and a infinite variety of beautiful views. We Thank You. The hallmark and legacy of all of the Board of Commissioners is one of great collaborative spirit. The growth and improvements to our Park District are living testament to that standard. These six embody that spirit. Here, a special acknowledgement for their longevity in serving, as well as some of their notable achievements to the Parks and the Belvidere community. William Bowley, Jr. (served 1919-1946) Credited with being the founder of the Park District, William was an original Board member and life-long public servant. When he passed in 1946, he held the distinction of being the long- est serving County Clerk (13 consecutive four-year terms) in the United States. Jay Wesley Dixon (1929-1976). The longest tenured Board Commissioner, at 47 years, when he stepped down in 1976. Jay became the Park Board President in 1941. Jean Twyning (1983-Current) As one can imagine, Jean’s contributions over the past 37+ years are many and var- ied. Highlights: Her integral role in the development of the Parks paved path system, which connects all of the community recreation areas; she initiated, then chaired the Kish-Walkathon for 19 years; and has served as Park liaison to the Board of Boone County Arts Council. Mary Marquardt (1987-Current) Mary’s tenure as President - 32 years - is one of the longest in the Park’s history. During that time she was instrumental in the development of the Land/Cash Ordinance, which significantly facilitated donations of land and cash to the District. Along with her work in establishing the Parks & Conservation Foundation. William M. Grady (1941-1976) Namesake of our Community Pool, Mr Grady was immersed in the community: Served as VP of the Park Board for many years; president of the School Board 1951-1957; chairman of the Belvidere Boy Scouts; taught in the school system and coached a variety of sports. John Spencer (1947-1974) Mr. Spencer grew up on River Street and was often spotted at the park, as he spent much time there. William Grady is known to have stated that “John was the most informed member of the Board.”
Thank you for keeping yourself and others safe RESTORE ILLINOIS PHASE 4 SAFETY GUIDELINES To sustain our progress, Governor Pritzker, the State of Illinois, Illinois Department of Public Health, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention are urging service areas and facilities, such as ours within the Belvidere Park District, to remind users of the safe- ty guidelines and protocols in place to ensure the safety of participants and visitors. We are taking this call-to-action seriously and encourage all community members to join us in complying with the safety proto- cols set forth to help stop the spread of COVID-19. For the safety of all employees, patrons, and vendors, the Belvidere Park District requests that all facility guests and program participants over the age of 2 follow IDPH guidelines and wear face masks when entering buildings and any time when 6-ft of social distancing cannot be maintained. PARTICIPANT & VISITOR SAFETY REMINDERS Facemasks are required upon entry to and in all common areas of buildings and at service touchpoints such as customer service desk locations. A minimum of 6-foot of social distancing is required at all of our indoor and outdoor facilities. Frequent hand washing and regular use of hand sanitizer are strongly recommended. Group gatherings of more than 50 persons are to be strictly avoided. When applicable, please bring your own equipment (towel, mat, water bottle, etc.) for use during your visits. Hours of operation have been altered for most facilities to accommodate for additional cleaning and sanitizing. In addition to regular maintenance, the park district has enhanced cleaning and disinfecting procedures for frequently touched objects and surfaces. Hand sanitizing stations are available in and around facilities for your use. Stay home when you are sick or experiencing symptoms of respiratory illness with fever, cough, and difficulty breathing. Avoid contact with others that are sick or experiencing COVID-19 like symptoms. Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash. Wash your hands often with soap and warm water for at least 20 seconds, especially after going to the bathroom, before eating, and after blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing.
