HEADING Welcome to the Arafura Games #AG2019 The Arafura Games began as the Arafura Sports Festival in 1991 with 1,500 athletes competing in seven sports. From 1998 it was known as the Arafura Games and was held every two years. The Games are back in 2019 and present opportunities to showcase our unique arts; culture, history and trade and investment links, whilst building friendship and understanding between competing nations. The Arafura Games 2019 will feature 17 sport disciplines, over 1500 athletes from over 40 nations and eight days of competition across 11 Darwin venues. The sports program includes an integrated para program in Athletics, Swimming, Tennis and Table Tennis. ARAFURA GAMES 2019 Spectator Guide 1
CULTURAL PROGRAM HEADING The Northern Territory is one of Australia’s most culturally diverse places and home to over 100 nationalities. The Larrakia people, also referred to as ‘Saltwater people', are the Traditional Owners of the lands and waters in and surrounding Darwin, including Darwin Harbour. As part of the Arafura Games, an arts and culture program has been specifically designed to showcase the Territory’s rich culture, environment and lifestyle to our visitors, though various events in the lead up to and during the Games. Both Opening and Closing Celebrations have a proudly Indigenous flavour and also celebrate the many different cultural groups who call Darwin home. 2 ARAFURA GAMES 2019 Spectator Guide

THE VENUES #AG2019 DARWIN WATERFRONT Kitchener Drive, Darwin City (Darwin Waterfront) Darwin Waterfront will host Beach Volleyball and the Opening and Closing Celebrations. MARRARA SPORTING COMPLEX Marrara Sporting Complex 10 Abala Road, Marrara Athletics, Basketball, Football, Netball, Squash, Table Tennis, Tennis and Indoor Volleyball FANNIE BAY (DARWIN SAILING CLUB) 8 Atkins Drive, Fannie Bay (Darwin Harbour) Sailing will take place directly out the front of the Darwin Sailing Club. THE PURPLE PATCH The Purple Patch at Marrara Sporting Complex and Darwin Waterfront will be a buzz of activity throughout the games, with free entertainment and activities that showcase the Northern Territory’s unique multi-cultural lifestyle. The Purple Patches will also be the place to go for all your Games and sport information. OPENING AND CLOSING CELEBRATIONS The star-studded opening and closing celebrations have been artistically created to capture Darwin’s unique and multi-cultural community. They showcase some of the Northern Territory’s greatest Aboriginal musicians, plus local artists, community and cultural groups. Opening Celebration 26 Friday 26 April 2019 6.30pm–9pm Darwin Waterfront A special Larrakia Welcome. Performances by the NT Dance Company led by Creative Director and local Larrakia man Gary Lang, plus entertainment by local community groups alongside musicians Shellie Morris and Leah Flanagan. Award winning hip hop artist Baker Boy to headline and fireworks display to celebrate the start of the Games. 12 ARAFURA GAMES 2019 Spectator Guide
#AG2019 Both celebration events are the collaborative works of creative producer Ben Graetz, an Iwaidja/Malak Malak man from Darwin with Torres Strait Islander heritage and Britt Guy from local Darwin company, Accomplice who will be expertly pulling both events together. Closing Celebration 4 Saturday 4 May 2019 6.30pm–9pm Darwin Waterfront A farewell celebration to pay tribute to the Games, the friendships made and our connection to ‘Mother Arafura’. Musicians Shellie Morris, Leah Flanagan, and Stevie Jean will perform before a dance spectacular by local dancers and school children.
