A sensuous, painterly period drama set in 18th century Brittany about the friendship that develops between two young women, a painter and her subject whose portrait she is commissioned to do without the subject's knowledge. Hoping to marry off her daughter to an Italian royal, a wealthy contessa (Valerie Golino) commissions an artist (Noémie Merlant) to come live at her Brittany estate where she's to make a portrait of her daughter Héloïse (Adèle Haenel). Easier said than done, as Héloïse has just come home after a long stint in a strict convent and is not thinking of marriage, arranged or otherwise. Therefore, Marianne must pose as a hired companion and paint Héloïse in secret - from memory - so that the her mother can make a deal for her hand without her knowledge. This is the fourth feature from French filmmaker Céline Sciamma (GIRLHOOD) and is a confidently crafted period drama that is traditional in its formal beauty and progressive in its treatment of romance between women. Two young women search for meaning and hope during their struggle to rebuild their lives amongst the ruins. This year's Russian entry for the Best International Feature at the Oscars arrives having already scored a directing award for filmmaker Kantemir Balagov at Cannes. Iya, or Beanpole, is a nurse at a hospital for wounded veterans in St. Petersburg at the tail end of WWII. A quiet and gangly figure still suffering the effects of a concussion sustained in the war, she cares for her patients with stoic resolve while looking after a young boy for whom she has a mysterious obligation. When another woman, Masha, shows up at the hospital, we begin to understand how past events motivate Iya and tie the characters together. A character drama exploring the manifestations of PTSD in a social climate of repression, BEANPOLE takes a sensitive and incisive approach to its two female protagonists. Offering more than just a portrait of misery, it provides a female perspective on the early stages of healing from the traumas of war. Russian with English subtitles. "Not only is BEANPOLE one of the first essential cinematic works released in theaters this year, it is also among the most involving character studies in recent memory." -Matt Fagerholm, RogerEbert.com Unrated / 2 hr 10 mins. February 28 - March 5: Fri Sat 5:30 Sun 2:30 Mon Tue 5:30 Wed 2:30 Thur 5:30 (Italy / 2019 / Directed by Marco Bellocchio) Acclaimed Italian filmmaker Marco Bellocchio (FISTS IN THE POCKET), now 80, this narrative feature tells the story of Tommaso Buscetta, the man who brought down the Cosa Nostra. In the early 1980's, an all-out war rages between Sicilian mafia bosses over the heroin trade. Tommaso Buscetta, a made man, flees to hide out in Brazil. Back home, scores are being settled and Buscetta watches from afar as his sons and brother are killed in Palermo, knowing he may be next. And as the ties of clan loyalty are strained and torn, he's arrested and extradited to Italy by the Brazilian police. Buscetta makes a decision that will change everything for the Mafia: he decides to meet with Judge Giovanni Falcone and betray the vow he made to the Cosa Nostra in the so-called "Maxi trial," a chaotic spectacle in which hundreds of mafiosi are tried simultaneously in a fortified courtroom within a Palermo prison. In Italian with English subtitles. R / 2 hrs 25 mins TRAILER / REVIEW Parasite February 28 - March 5: Fri-Tue 8:20 Wed 5:30 Thur 8:20 (South Korea / 2019 / Directed by Bong Joon-Ho) Academy Awards Big Winner (director, picture, screenplay, international)! Also took the Cannes Film Fest's top prize, the Palme D'or, here's a film its director calls "a comedy without clowns and a tragedy without villains," a film that keeps us delightfully off balance as it mixes pathos and satire with thrills and drama as it nails the dichotomy between the struggling poor and the wildly rich. A vertical story of class struggle - meet the moldy basement dwelling Kims: Ki-taek (Song Kang-ho) an unemployed husband and father; his hard-working wife Chung-sook (Chang Hyae-jin), his clever twenty-something daughter Ki-jung (Park So-dam), and his teenaged son Ki-woo (Choi Woo-shik). And then there's the Park family living in a fabulous airy house with their teenage daughter Da-hye and terribly spoiled young son Da-song, who has suffered a childhood trauma that occasionally causes him to exhibit strange behavior. Due to an unexpected stroke of luck and some clever moves, Ki-woo is hired by the Parks to be the private English tutor of Da-hye, and soon figures out how to get his sister hired as an art therapist. Before long all the Kims are inside the Park's bastion of privilege as the destinies of the two families become interlaced. As they become enmeshed, the film takes us on a fascinating ride that culminates in a powerful and utterly original outcome. In Korean with

TRAILER / REVIEWS Oct February 28 - March 5 in Woodstock: Once Were Brothers: Robbie Robertson and the Band February 28 - March 5: Fri 7:30 Sat 4:30 7:30 Sun 2:30 5:30 Mon-Thur 7:30 (Canada / 2019 / Directed by Daniel Roher) Largely told from Robertson's perspective, this confessional, cautionary, and occasionally humorous tale focusses on Robbie Robertson's life and the creation of one of the most enduring groups in the history of popular music, The Band. The film follows Robertson's personal journey from Toronto as a teenage whiz-kid guitar- slinger, too young to get into the clubs where he played every night with rockabilly Ronnie Hawkins, to touring with Bob Dylan in 1966 and on to international fame as one of The Band. Robertson was only 24 when he and Levon Helm, Rick Danko, Richard Manuel and Garth Hudson recorded their groundbreaking debut album, Music From Big Pink. This period, the mid-1960s through the early 1970s, was a time of cultural and political upheaval as well as when some of the most enduring and influential rock music was made. ONCE WERE BROTHERS... joins a growing list of recent documentaries, including ECHO IN THE CANYON, DAVID CROSBY: REMEMBER MY NAME, and Scorsese's ROLLING THUNDER REVUE, which have examined the music and musicians of this remarkably fertile period. The film is more than tinged with sadness and pain. Robbie Robertson says, "What I really want people to realize is that this group, The Band, was one of the most unique musical entities ever in the history of rock and roll. There was never anything like it before, and there will never be anything like it again." R / 1 hr 42 mins. TRAILER / REVIEWS The Burnt Orange Heresy
