Issue 7: March 2015 Artists race the clock for TSB Bank Art in a Day A new art competition launched in February challenged artists to capture the essence of Parnell, Newmarket or Grafton in just one day. Parnell Community Centre was the centre of action for the inaugural TSB Bank Art in a Day competition held over the last two weekends of February. TSB Bank Art in a Day was a collaboration between local organisations in Parnell, Newmarket and Grafton: Parnell Trust, Grafton Residents Association, Newmarket Business Association, Parnell Inc, Parnell Community Committee, Newmarket Arts Trust and Newmarket Community Association. Representatives from the group were inspired by similar competitions held in Europe and the local event encouraged artists to celebrate the three neighbouring communities: our sense of place, our culture and identity. In the competition, artists raced the clock on Saturday 21st February to create a piece of art that celebrated and captured the spirit of the historic Auckland’s suburbs of Parnell, Newmarket and Grafton. Artists had to register for the event and have their chosen medium authenticated at Parnell Community Centre by 9am before setting out to create their work. They then had to return with their completed artwork before 5pm. Nearly 80 artists registered to participate and 44 artists completed the competition, working in a range of media from watercolours and acrylics to oils and mixed media. The diverse range and high quality of works entered presented an enjoyable challenge for the competition’s three judges; Auckland artist Harold Coop, Waitemata Local Board member and art collector, Greg Moyle and Michelle Whitecliffe, founder and President of Whitecliffe College of Arts & Design. An exhibition was held over the following weekend, February 28th and March 1st, at Parnell Community Centre, with prizes were awarded at a ceremony held on Saturday, 28 February attended by around 100 art lovers, artists and guests (pictured at left). A cache of valuable prizes totalling $4,500 was up for grabs in TSB Bank Art in a Day, thanks to the generosity of sponsors. TSB Bank was proud Gold Sponsor of this new event. TSB Bank’s Newmarket Branch Manager, Diane Stark said the new event was a fantastic opportunity for the Bank to give back to its local communities and celebrate the rich history of these Auckland suburbs. Amanda subsequently gifted her winning artwork to TSB Bank’s Newmarket branch. • The Second Prize of a TSB account with $1,000, was awarded to David Gibbons, pictured painting on page 1, for his watercolour of St Stephens chapel at Judges Bay. David’s work was also voted the most popular artwork by visitors to the exhibition, winning him the People’s Choice Award - a one year membership at the Olympic Pools and Fitness Centre, valued at $650. • The Third Prize of a TSB account with $500 went to Bhagya Rupisinghe for his vibrant acrylic painting that incorporated elements of all three suburbs. • The Secondary Schools’ Prize of $500 worth of art supplies from Gordon Harris was one by Jacqueline Cox, a student of Glendowie College. All works at the exhibition were for sale by way of Silent Auction, with a top price of $750 for one piece. Twenty percent of proceeds from the auction went to help fund the competition. Funding and support was also provided by Waitemata Local Board and the community groups will seek ongoing assistance from the Board to run the competition next year. Parnell Trust is keen to support and grow the competition into the future. ”We believe the competition has potential to grow and attract more artists, build greater awareness of our communities and enhance our community spirit,” said Parnell Trust’s new CEO, Lyn Fox. Introducing Lyn Fox - Parnell Trust’s new CEO Parnell Trust’s Board of Trustees announced the appointment of Lyn Fox as the Trust’s new Chief Executive Officer, in February. Parnell Trust’s former CEO, Chris Davidson resigned in February to take up a new position with Taikura Trust. For the past three years, Lyn was Parnell Trust’s Sales and Operations Manager. In this position she gained a deep knowledge of every aspect of the Trust’s varied operations, managing all service divisions, driving sales and growth, and stretching staff to meet both their potential and the growing needs of our community. As second in command at Parnell Trust, Lyn worked closely with the CEO to change culture and restore the Trust to sound financial status. As Parnell Trust continues to grow and add to the services provided to our community, the skills of the CEO will be critical in managing Parnell Trust’s operational effectiveness. The Chair of Parnell Trust’s Board of Trustees, David Vinsen, said Lyn brings the experience and expertise to meet these challenges through a proven record of operational leadership, strategy development, customer service, team building, financial management and relationship management. Given Lyn’s enthusiasm for community-building, she is eager to begin collaborating with staff, Waitemata Local Board, Council, and members of the community with a view to delivering results that promote community wellbeing. Under Lyn’s leadership, Parnell Trust will continue to strengthen and develop the diverse services currently provided, while exploring new areas of need in our community.
