With Burns celebrations taking place across South Ayrshire
this month, we're taking a look back at our celebrated poet's
  roots.

The gallery below shows archive images of Burns Cottage,
which was built by Robert's father in 1757. You can also see
historical images of the famous Brig o'Doon, which played
an important role in Burns' poem 'Tam O'Shanter' published
  in 1791.

               Calling All Budding Bards!

In the Introductory Note to his publication 'The Poets of
Ayrshire', John Macintosh makes the following statement:

"That Ayrshire owes much of its poetical celebrity to Robert
Burns cannot be gainsaid, there still would remain much good
    work well worthy of preservation.”
These words are as relevant
today as they were when
Macintosh published his
anthology of Ayrshire
poetry back in 1910, with
several writing clubs
currently meeting in Ayr,
Girvan and Troon. The
groups meet regularly and
welcome members old and
new.

January is the ideal time to take up a new hobby, so why not
get your creative juices flowing and come along to one of the
friendly groups?

                  New Year - New You
The New Year is upon us and while our motivation peaks it's a great
time to get into a new health and fitness regime. Here are some top
tips from our Citadel Health and Fitness team to help you to start right
and stay healthy.
Train with a friend – commit to training with someone,
you'll be less likely to miss workouts and can encourage
         each other to work harder.

Swap steady state cardio for interval training - the road to
a leaner body isn't a long, slow march, it's bursts of high-
intensity effort paired with slower, recovery efforts. 15-20
minutes of interval training performed like this can burn
as many calories as an hour of traditional, steady state
         cardio.

Run hills to burn fat faster and reduce injury – more
muscle means more results. Uphill running activates 9%
more muscle per stride than trotting at the same pace on
         level ground.

Lift heavier weights – putting more weight on the bar
won't make you ‘bulky’, it'll make you stronger and can
protect you from osteoporosis by increasing bone
density. Choose a weight which you can perform 8 to 12
reps, with the last rep being a struggle, but not
         impossible.

Eat the right amount of calories for how active you are, so
that you balance the energy you consume with energy you
         use.

Eat a wide range of foods to ensure you get a balanced

Volunteers are vital to the success of the programme with 79% of

Pupils earned their water wings as they were coached

Waste Not - Gain a Lot!
A popular New Year’s resolution is to spend less and save more.
Here are some money saving tips from the Energy Agency to help
you keep more in the pot!
                            • Shower quicker! Spend one minute
less showering every day and you
could save £7 off your energy bills per
year. This quickly adds up, in a
household of four that would be an
                            annual saving of £28.

                            • Turn your heating thermostat down
by 1°, this could save you up to £75 on
                            your annual heating bill.

                            • Avoid standby – turn appliances off
when you’re not using them and
you’ll spend around £30 less on
                            electricity.

                            • Don’t just get yourself outdoors in
the summer – get your clothes out
                            too. Drying clothes outside during
the summer months could save you
an average of £30 per year.

If you follow these super savvy suggestions your
savings could buy:
• A weekly shop for a family of four or
• 5 trips to the cinema for a family of four

Ambassadors, who meet three times per year, support important

The group collaborated to put paid to some of the common myths

Ayrshire Hospice Chief Executive, Mandy Yule, said, ‘We are

Considering a Career in Early Learning
               and Childcare?
By 2020 all children aged 3-5 in South Ayrshire (and eligible 2
years olds) will be entitled to 1140 hours of free learning and
childcare. In order to deliver this, we will required an increased
staff team of well qualified, highly skilled Early Years
Practitioners with a passion for working with children.

To support this expansion we launched our Early Learning and
Childcare apprenticeship programme last year. The programme
has supported 48 people to begin careers as Modern Apprentices
in our centres. This has included a number of school assistants
who have taken up this great opportunity to pursue a career
change by re-training in this area.

Vicky Bradley MA at Heathfield Primary and Early Years Centre
(pictured below) said, "I’ve been given the opportunity to train
for a job I’ve been dreaming about doing for years. I feel very
lucky and have great support around me. I would recommend
the apprenticeship programme to anyone."

The programme has proven to be a great success, Karen
Blackwood, DHT from Glenburn Primary and Early Years Centre
said, “This has been a very positive experience for us. The
apprenticeship programme is an excellent way of training our
future Early Years Practitioners."

          TV Debut for Ballantrae Primary
Pupils from Ballantrae Primary School were overjoyed when they
were invited to perform Christmas carols live on ITV’s ‘This
Morning’ in December. A journalist from the ITV News Desk got in
touch when they discovered the school had suffered a major fire
earlier last year and thought the pupils deserved a special Christmas
treat.
Primary 2 pupils, teachers and
parents were flown to ITV studios
in London courtesy of This
Morning. The excited children got
to rub shoulders with the stars
when they were interviewed by
Eamonn Holmes and Ruth
Langsford – they even caught a
glimpse of Dame Joan Collins!
The fun didn’t stop there, next up
was ice skating then on to the
Investigative Centre at the
Natural History Museum.

On the flight home, word quickly
spread that the budding
celebrities were on board and a
special request for a mile-high
rendition of the performance
came direct from the flight deck.
For the majority of the children, and some of their parents it was
their first time travelling on an aircraft and pupil Archie
commented,“It was scary but then I loved how fast the plane went!”

             Winter Fun at Belleisle
Hundreds of people flocked to Belleisle Park to enjoy our
Winter Wildwood Festival. The event, which was
supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund, celebrated the
impressive work which has transformed Belleisle Park over
 the last five years.

There was certainly plenty to keep everyone entertained
with live music, refreshments, an activity zone and fire pits
with the obligatory marshmallows for toasting.

It wasn't just the fire pits which were a roaring success -
the whole festival was a great family night out with all and
sundry eagerly anticipating the next event.
