5 SOUTH AYRSHIRE COUNCIL LIVE JANUARY 2019 Calling All Budding Bards! In the Introductory Note to his publication 'The Poets of Ayrshire', John Macintosh makes the following statement: "That Ayrshire owes much of its poetical celebrity to Robert Burns cannot be gainsaid, there still would remain much good work well worthy of preservation.” These words are as relevant today as they were when Macintosh published his anthology of Ayrshire poetry back in 1910, with several writing clubs currently meeting in Ayr, Girvan and Troon. The groups meet regularly and welcome members old and new. January is the ideal time to take up a new hobby, so why not get your creative juices flowing and come along to one of the friendly groups? JANUARY 2019 SOUTH AYRSHIRE COUNCIL LIVE 8 New Year - New You The New Year is upon us and while our motivation peaks it's a great time to get into a new health and fitness regime. Here are some top tips from our Citadel Health and Fitness team to help you to start right and stay healthy. Train with a friend – commit to training with someone, you'll be less likely to miss workouts and can encourage each other to work harder. Swap steady state cardio for interval training - the road to a leaner body isn't a long, slow march, it's bursts of high- intensity effort paired with slower, recovery efforts. 15-20 minutes of interval training performed like this can burn as many calories as an hour of traditional, steady state cardio. Run hills to burn fat faster and reduce injury – more muscle means more results. Uphill running activates 9% more muscle per stride than trotting at the same pace on level ground. Lift heavier weights – putting more weight on the bar won't make you ‘bulky’, it'll make you stronger and can protect you from osteoporosis by increasing bone density. Choose a weight which you can perform 8 to 12 reps, with the last rep being a struggle, but not impossible. Eat the right amount of calories for how active you are, so that you balance the energy you consume with energy you use. Eat a wide range of foods to ensure you get a balanced Follow Sport & Leisure on Social Media:
