A LETTER FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF THE CATHOLIC SERVICES APPEAL FOUNDATION Dear Pastor and Administrator, We are blessed to live together as God’s family within the Archdiocese of Saint Paul and Minneapolis. We have each been blessed with different gifts and are called to share from our abundance with those in need. As leaders providing guidance for your parishioners, your commitment and dedication make a great impact on our parishes and the wider community. This is seen particularly through the way your support of the Catholic Services Appeal Foundation enables the 20 Designated Ministries to thrive and transform lives. This year’s Catholic Services Appeal campaign theme is: “Together in Hope” Serve the poor, support life and strengthen the faith remain the three tenets that create our foundations very mission. Your leadership is a powerful testament to our one Catholic family working together in support of our local Church and the 20 Designated Ministries so vital to this Archdiocese. In order to assist you in running a successful 2021 Catholic Services Appeal, the CSAF staff has prepared this Leadership Guide. I invite you to utilize the valuable information inside and given that each parish is currently doing things “differently”, please utilize whatever works best within your parish. PRINCIPLES FOR SUCCESS #1 Get people to participate and the dollars will take care of themselves. This appeal is about participation in the mission of the Church. People who have given in the past are more likely to give again and people tend to increase the size of their pledge each year, so the money will continue to come, in increasing amounts, from current donors. The real challenge is to motivate more people to make a commitment for financial support of the church through the CSAF. #2 Make it as easy as possible for people to make a pledge. Easy on the donors, not necessarily easy on you. That means putting the bulletin inserts and in-pew pledge envelopes in the pews. Go through the in-pew process at each Mass and invite peo- ple to drop their envelope in the collection basket. This year we have added a new simplified online giving site at GiveCSAF.org and we invite parishes to have parishioners take out their cell phones and give electronically during the in-pew process. #3 Respect people’s dignity by inviting everyone to participate. People cannot respond if you do not give them the opportunity. Don’t hesitate to ask all pa- rishioners to give a gift. Allow them to decide whether or not they can give, and at what level. It is not our place to make that decision for them. #4 Use a variety of methods to reach a variety of people. Some people are best motivated in writing, others visually, verbally or personally. Use sever- al approaches—not just one– to reach a lot of people with your message. Some people will respond best to the spiritual reasons for participating, others will be motivated by the mission-related minis- tries and still others by visible things. #5 People give to people, not causes (and the most important person is the pastor!) The pastor must personally make the appeal at every Mass on Commitment Weekend. This lets all parishioners know that he considers them full members of the parish community and he re- lies on everyone’s support. This sincere personal commitment and enthusiasm of the pastor is contagious. #6 Make the CSAF an opportunity for spiritual growth. Relate the CSA to our responsibility as disciples to help carry out the mission of Christ’s Church. Financial support of church programs and services is as much a part of our Catholic spiritu- ality as is prayer and service to others. Encourage parishioners to make their pledge as an expres- sion of gratitude for all God has done for them. Also include prayer for the success of the CSAF and the ministries it supports in your campaign. #7 Effectively communicate the reasons to support the CSAF. Do so in all appropriate languages, both in writing and verbally. The reasons are both spiritu- al and practical, reflecting on the important Designated Ministries. Repetition of the message in dif- ferent ways increases understanding. Most people will have to hear a message numerous times be- fore they make it their own. Each time you publicly invite people to participate in the CSAF, you will reinforce your gratitude to those who have already pledged and will motivate more to participate. #8 Set an example. Have the Pastor make their own pledge first. Your words will carry the weight of your con- victions and people will be open to following your lead especially if you stress the importance of the CSAF. #9 To get different (better) results this year—try something different! Every different thing you do in the campaign will have an impact on different people. If you haven’t shown the video before—try it; or have a lay person share a testimony about the CSAF; send out a follow-up letter; or make a quick phone call to ask for their participation. Try something new! #10 You can’t say “thank you” too often. Express gratitude to everyone supporting the CSAF in pulpit announcements and in the bul- letin several times during the year. Let people know of the parish’s success and what a difference it is making. Continue to invite them to participate because people like to be part of something that is successful. 10 Catholic Services Appeal Foundation

TIPS FOR ANNOUNCEMENT/COMMITMENT/FOLLOW-UP WEEKENDS On Announcement Weekend (February 6-7, 2021): • Mention that the CSAF is an independent Foundation and that all donations go only to carry out the Appeal and to fund the 20 Designated Ministries and parishes. • Feature a brief personal testimony by a parishioner or guest speaker on how he or she has been impacted by a ministry of the CSAF. • Share that the CSAF funds several ministries that people may not think of do- nating to, or even know how to donate to, that would not be able to minister as they do without parishioners’ support. Some examples include: - hospital chaplaincies - prison ministry - outreach to deaf and mentally challenged Catholics - regional events for Grandparents’ ministry, Catholic Watchmen, and the annual Archdiocesan Youth Day. • Encourage parishioners to pray about their contribution to support the many Designated Ministries of the Foundation. • Remind parishioners that if your parish exceeds goal and/or raises more for CSAF this year than last year, your parish will receive funds back. • If utilizing the cell phone in-pew giving option, remind parishioners to bring their cell phones in to Mass next weekend. On Commitment Weekend (February 13-14, 2021): • Show the brief 3-minute video. • Promote mobile (cell phone or online) giving via “GiveCSAF.org”. • Walk parishioners through the in-pew giving process. On Follow-Up Weekend (February 27-28, 2021): • Encourage those who’ve not yet made a CSAF contribution to do so. • Promote mobile (cell phone or online) giving via “GiveCSAF.org”. • Remind parishioners that all contributions go to the 20 Designated Ministries and that additional information is available via {your parish location} and online at “CSAFspm.org”. 12 Catholic Services Appeal Foundation

In-Pew Script To be used by pastors on Commitment Weekend (Please Note: After the pastor has edited the following script, please type his cor- rections, double space the text, enlarge it to 14 or 16 point type, print it, and place it in a notebook.) “Good morning. Today we are conducting the Catholic Services Appeal cam- paign that asks all parishioners to make a financial commitment to support the work of the many ministries that are funded by the CSAF that no one parish can support on its own. “ “As your pastor, I want to thank all of you who have given to this campaign in past years and/or have responded to a recent mailing from the Catholic Services Appeal Foundation. I can assure you that the funds you give are deeply appreci- ated by the people served by these ministries.” “I also want to assure all of you that your gifts to the CSAF will be used solely for the purposes of the 2021 Appeal, which is the support of the Designated Minis- tries. I ask you to make a generous contribution.” “The Catholic Services Appeal is a very effective way to support ministries out- side of our parish boundaries. “So, I ask one member of each household to raise your hand so that we can give you a pledge envelope. Please take an in-pew envelope even if you have already given in the mail or cannot give at this time. You can indicate either of those choices on the envelope.” “While we are waiting, please examine the monthly pledge payment amounts that are listed on the pledge document. Please consider giving a monthly pledge that will allow you to provide a larger gift.” (Pause and make sure that everyone has received a pledge envelope. Pay special attention to people who are standing, and in the cry room or choir loft, and choir members. Once everyone has an envelope, continue with the script.) 21 Catholic Services Appeal Foundation
Commitment Weekend In-Pew Script, Con- “Now I am going to guide you quickly through the process in order to minimize the interruption in the liturgy. (Pause and wait until about half of those participating are looking back at you). “Complete your personal information, name, address, etc., including your e-mail address.” (This will require some time so be sure to pause at least 15 seconds and be sure that about half of those participating are looking back at you). “On the next line, please indicate the name of our parish so that we will receive credit for your gift. If you are a visitor and are a member of another parish, you may indicate that parish.” (Pause about 5 seconds). “I ask everyone else to look at the gift boxes on the left side of the form and check the amount that you wish to give. If you pledge, the Catholic Services Ap- peal Foundation will send you helpful monthly reminders. You may pay over eight months or less if you wish. Also, there is no need to provide a down pay- ment today.” “In the event that you wish to contribute an amount other than the ones indicat- ed, please check the “Other” box and indicate the full amount of your pledge on the blank line to its right.” (Pause about 10 seconds). “Now, please look at the lines provided on the right-hand side of the pledge en- velope. Indicate the total amount that you pledged on the first line.” 22 Catholic Services Appeal Foundation
Commitment Weekend In-Pew Script, “In the event that you are making a down payment, write the amount of the down payment in the next box.” (Pause 5 seconds). “Subtract the down payment from the full amount of your pledge and note the un- paid balance on the line provided.” (Pause 5 seconds). “I will give you another moment to complete your credit card information if you wish to use your credit card. Please note that you can make a one-time gift or check the box that will allow you to be billed in ten installments. (Pause 20 seconds). “Please be sure to tear off the pledge form, place it in the envelope and drop it in the collection basket. “On behalf of all of those who will benefit from your gifts and myself, I thank you for your contribution to the Catholic Services Appeal. May God bless you.” (Note: It is strongly recommend that Appeal in-pew envelopes be collected separately from Sunday offerings ). 23 Catholic Services Appeal Foundation
In-Pew Presentation Script To be used by a parish leader on Follow-up Weekend Please note: Once the Follow-up Weekend presenters have had an opportunity to edit their script, please double space it, enlarge it to 14 or 16 point type, print it and place it in a notebook. “Good morning. I am _______________ and today we are conducting the fol- low-up process for the Catholic Services Appeal. “On behalf of our Pastor ____________________ I want to thank all of you who have given to this campaign in past years and/or have responded to a recent mailing from the Catholic Services Appeal Foundation or our first in- pew process. I can assure you that the funds you give are deeply appreciated by the people served by these ministries. “Your gift is considered a restricted gift to the Designated Ministries.” “I ask those who have already given to say a prayer for the success of the Appeal as I invite those who have not yet contributed to do so. “This year we are stressing the importance of participation and of making a significant pledge to support the Appeal. Now, I ask one member of each household that has not had an opportunity to fill out a pledge form to signal the usher (student) so that a pledge envelope will be passed to you.” (Pause and make sure that everyone who wants a pledge envelope and pencil has received them. Pay special attention to people who are standing, and in the cry room or choir loft, and choir members. Continuing Campaign Management Each month, beginning in April, a special effort should be made to inform and edu- cate parishioners on the importance of paying their monthly pledge commitments. The words that are used are critical. For that reason, we encourage pastors and parish committees to talk with members of each ethnic culture within their parish to establish that the messages being presented are clear, non-offensive, and pro- ductive. Parishes serving parishioners that are economically disadvantaged may want to offer to forward pledge payments to the Catholic Services Appeal Foundation each month. If your parish wishes to do this, make the offer both in the bulletin and verbally whenever you run the bulletin announcement about the Appeal status of the parish. Encourage people to put their payments and the coupon in the en- velope that they received and put them in the collection basket on the next week- end. The Bulletin Announcement presented below should be edited to ensure that each audience understands it. Then, it should be published on the first weekend of each month. In addition, please have a respected member of the community make a brief pulpit announcement each month on the weekend that the bulletin announcement is published. This individual should inform the community of the progress toward the parish goal, stress the importance of making pledge payments, and refer people to the bulletin announcement. Please consider having several community leaders make these announcements, so that the same person is not speaking month after month. 2021 CATHOLIC SERVICES APPEAL PLEDGE REPORT Monthly pledge payments for the CSA pledges should be made in the next few days. It is very important that these pledges be paid so that our parish will reach our goal. Continuing Campaign Management, Parish Reports Parishes will be able to download their giving information off of the Online Dashboard. Parishes will be able to print lists of those who have given as well as those who have not given to the 2021 CSA. Information on the 2021 CSA is available by going to our website: www.csafspm.org Contact Information If you have questions about which ministries receive appeal funds, pledge processing or other questions specific to the Catholic Services Appeal Foundation, please call the Catholic Services Appeal Foundation (CSAF) at 612-294-6622. Help to Expedite Pledge Processing: SEND PAYMENTS OR NEW COMMITMENTS WITHIN 2 OR 3 DAYS. As a courtesy to our donors, it is important for the CSAF Office to deposit their check in a timely manner. Holding onto these donations slows the process and puts the Catholic Services Appeal Foundation in a negative position with the donor. 28 Catholic Services Appeal Foundation
