COVER STORY THE SPECTRUM // ISSUE 16 // JANUARY-MARCH 2019 8 DIVERSIFY COVER STORY // GIVES BACK by Diana Dijamco People and Culture Manager D iversify’s monthly huddles are a fixture in our culture. With how hard everyone works each day, having these small but lively gatherings are a welcome escape. We’ve seen just how creative people can get when it comes to the given theme each month. Huddles have consisted of beauty pag- eants, game shows, music festivals, and environ- mental awareness.
THE SPECTRUM // ISSUE 16 // JANUARY-MARCH 2019 9 COVER STORY // As one would usually do in February, each of our hud- dles had their own unique approach to celebrating Valen- tine’s. At our Twenty-Four Seven site, there was a school fair being held inside Diversify, complete with games, ice cream and some live music in between. Over on Twenty-Five Seven, the search was on to find our King and Queen of Hearts along with some of Diversify’s favourite (and cheesy) pick-up lines. RSC showed us all that #LoveWins with dif- ferent Valentine’s day themed games and some free sweets. But amidst the usual celebration, the Diversify team also cel- ebrated a very different kind of love and made this year’s Val- entine’s a truly memorable one. Click here to relive the February 2019 huddle highlights.
Each of our sites partnered with a charity of THE SPECTRUM // ISSUE 16 // JANUARY-MARCH 2019 11 their choosing. While the traditional huddle COVER STORY // was being celebrated, organisers held fund- raising activities to benefit different organi- sations. Team RSC raised funds for the Bahay ni Maria Orphanage, a shelter for abandoned and homeless girls located in Makati. Twen- ty-Five Seven’s beneficiary was Bahay Aruga, a house that provides free accommodation for pediatric cancer patients. Twenty-Four Seven’s huddle benefited Busilak PH, a support group for child patients with congenital heart defects (You can learn more about this organisation later in the issue). The messages were evident in our February huddles. It was a chance for everyone to give back. As Diversify’s staff so often does, everyone put in their full attention and efforts into creating memorable huddles. What’s more, Diversify showed its heart as there was plenty of enthusiasm and support for the charitable organisations that each site was working with. In total, Diversify raised over Php 75,000 across three of our huddles. The money raised was used to purchase different essentials for their charities and as a donation to the organ- isations. On weekends, some employees even personally delivered the gifts to these chari- ties, giving them a first-hand look at who they were able to help. There is no shortage of generosity in Diversify, and it’s delightful to see staff band together for a great cause. During a month that cel- ebrates love, many remembered that love should be for all, not just those you know or closest to you.

How long has it been around? THE SPECTRUM // ISSUE 16 // JANUARY-MARCH 2019 13 FEATURE // Busilak was founded on February 1, 2018, exactly one year after my son, Piel Keon’s successful cardiac catheter procedure. I founded the support group together with four others like me (called “heart moms) and we became its core members. What led you to establish something like Busilak? It started really with my son. The journey towards his healthy heart was a very long and tiring one. Until I met Doc Jonas, I didn’t have much support that I needed for his condition. We [my family and I] had routine checks every Tuesday and Thursday at the Philip- pine Heart Center. We had to be there as early as 3AM and would stay until 5PM or 6PM. We also had pedia-gastro checkups at the Philippine Children’s Medical Center on Mondays and Wednesdays. This weekly routine went on for about eight months. In that time, I was always in the out-patient departments of both hospitals where I met other parents whose children also had the same, sometimes more complicated cases as my son. In 2017, I met Doc Jonas. He said we needed to have a “balloon procedure” called Percutaneous Pulmonary Balloon Valvuloplasty. He explained that a balloon will be inflated inside Piel’s stenotic pulmonary valve to make it wider, allowing oxygenated blood to flow from his heart which was previously blocked. We expected that this procedure to be in the hundreds of thousands. With God’s grace and Doc Jonas’ help, we only paid very little con- sidering the severity of my son’s case and the urgency we needed to have the procedure done. It really was a miracle for us! Since the operation, I began to devote my time and effort to help other families with CHD patients. With Doc Jonas as our medical adviser, Busilak helped create a new family of what we call heart troopers and heroes. What has been the most rewarding part about having Busilak in your life? Busilak was created not just as a support group for heart families. It also became a place where we could communicate to the parents of patients from provinces so they could have their checkups or any needed intervention. I have personally made sure that these families are assisted - from forwarding their medical records to Doc Jonas, doing background checks and giving them instructions on where to get admitted and who to look for as a charity patient.
THE SPECTRUM // ISSUE 16 // JANUARY-MARCH 2019 14 Seeing these parents and patients for the first time is FEATURE // always tearful yet joyous. It is overwhelming and heart- warming getting hugs from the mothers and kisses from the children. Seeing the previously dusk-skinned patients have red lips, fingers and toes and clear skin tells me their hearts are already healed. This is more rewarding than receiving material gifts from anyone. The gratefulness of parents and the warmth of their hugs every time they say thank you to me fills my heart with much joy. You’re still a fairly new organization, but are there some memorable moments that already standout? Definitely our first Christmas party as an organization last December. Originally, we planned to only invite 150 participants from Busilak and PCMC Cardio-OPD. We prepared for months and it was very successful. The event attracted sponsors, including major entities like Unilab, Procter and Gamble, McDonalds, Huggies, IBM, University of Perpetual Help and many others. To our surprise, we ended up having 249 registered participants. The admins and I feared the gifts wouldn’t be enough for the kids, but there was more than enough for everyone. During the event, there were donations that were delivered directly to the venue. I like to say that both blessings and rain were pouring that day. The kids present couldn’t carry their lootbags and gifts since they needed bigger bags to put them into. After the party, we were able to share boxes of diapers, toys, food and lootbags to different hospital wards and departments. Even hospital staff with children had their share. I can’t forget the children’s faces when they received their gifts and lootbags. They were so happy. We fulfilled our goal of organizing the party but more importantly, we wanted them to be really happy and forget their illness just for a day.
